    This is the best, most extensive and comprehensive video on 3-needle BO, especially the combination variation. Thank you very much for this, it told and showed me everything I could possibly want to know about it!

    Roxanne!!!!! I made the Snowdy Day blanket by Janice Hope and I added more hexagons on the back for added warmth! I needed a way to connect the top and bottom layers before I stitched everything together and after searching and trying so many different styles I found you- which is silly because I should have started with you! 😂
    I used your knit/purl 3NBO and I added one step to make this stretchy and it works amazingly well!
    Before you bind off the second stitch over the first on your rh needle, you just knit those two together instead!
    I cannot thank you enough for this video!
    Love from MN ❤

    This video is so excellent it deserves many, many more views after 5 years! Roxanne - maybe you could add some key words to your video like 'smoother 3-needle bind off' and 'improved 3-needle bind off for shoulders' or even 'flatter 3-needle bind off' or 'new 3-needle bind-off ' ? Maybe that will help more people, who I'm sure would especially love to learn about that last technique in this set of 'finesses', to find it.
    I wouldn't use a 3-needle bind-off previously because I don't like the ridge, especially on baby's things. Now I use it very happily because that last one is smooth and flat and does something a graft can't for shoulders, which is add a bit of structural stability. Bonus - the shoulders meet stitch-to-stitch and are not offset a half-stitch like they are when you graft. :-)

    The knit and purl method is absolutely genius! I’ve just spent ages doing it on the shoulder seam on a baby jumper and it looks amazing. (Mind you, I need a lie down before I attempt the other side.) I don’t know how you make it look so easy! SO worth it though. Thank you! X

    What a brilliant video on 3-needle BO. I am knitting a baby cardigan and the pattern recommends joining the shoulders using 3 needle BO with WS together - so that it makes decorative seam on outside. My concern is that this might be too bulky-looking a join on a cardigan to fit 6-month old. So glad I decided to research this first, and found your video with finessing suggestions. I am confident now that I can practice swatch, as you suggest, for best suiting join. Thank you.

  • @thumbelinasmum

    I like the knit purl version, I’m going to try it! I recommend you also do a video showing the invisible 3-needle bo version, the really old one. In 18th knitting, sock toes and “common heels”, they used the variation recommended for finishing colorwork or knit-purl patterned shoulders. Using a circ or dpn, on the WS, drop the yarn. Enter the first st as to knit, the back as to purl, draw that purl through the front knit and both off the needle. Continue across. Now go back and bind off normally. This is less bulky, and on the other side, each stitch appears to dive down into its matching stitch. This way, say you have vertical two color stripes or ribbing, each stitch will dive down into its mate, looking almost like it was grafted. With the regular version, the stitches are smooshed against each other, rather than intersecting.

      The fact that I learn something new every time I make a video is one of the reasons I love knitting. I set out to demonstrate something in particular, and then I start to wonder...what would happen if I did this variation? Or that variation? The garter stitch invisible seam line was a complete surprise to me. So I spent some time poking at the stitches, and thinking about what was going on, and why...and then I ended up with some new information and a new bag of tricks!

I just search how to knit the stitch pattern (e g scrolling lace, chaverons...) and then figure out how it will fit into a blouse, how to shape armholes, neck openings, shoulder shapings and joinings. Just completed shoulder on the front piece;) From Sharon.

    I have found that I'm 10 times faster and the end result looks 1000 times better doing the three needle bind off with a crochet hook. I should add that I'm a crocheter since I'm 12 but I only started knitting in my 20s. I was so surprised when I did this technique for the first time and discovered that the end result looked just like a simple crochet chain joint stitch. It's just so easy and effortless.
    If someone is struggling with this I highly suggest trying a crochet hook as the working needle. It's just perfect and you won't be fiddling with dropped stitches.

You can find them in this playlist: ua-cam.com/play/PL1AZxTfSCe2dX9mRDhSfBEhumlmtMsA0A.html For vertical edges, I recommend working the selvedge stitch in stockinette and maintaining the seed stitch pattern in the 2nd st through the next to last stitch. That makes seaming and picking up sts a lot easier, because you have a clean line of stockinette to work with.

    I'm making a sweater I kept the bind off stitches on the needles as I finished each row of bind offs so I could do the 3 nb for a decorative shoulder. As I did the 3 needle bind off I notice a gap I guess caused from one row with 5 bind off and next row with 6 bind off. How can i eliminate the ? Also if I wanted to use the kp bind off would you still follow shoulder to neck , neck to shoulder ? Thank you for the kp bind off what a great idea. Is it better to sew under arm seams before or after bind off at shoulder ? Thanks again.

    • @RoxanneRichardson
      @RoxanneRichardson  4 роки тому

      Whether you work both bind offs from the neck to the shoulder, from shoulder to neck, or start at one shoulder and end at the other is up to you and the effect you want in your finished result. In my own projects, I mirror them, working both from the neck to the shoulder, but if you don't like that result, then you should do what pleases you. For shoulder shaping, I typically apply some sort of short row technique at the turns (W&T or German SR), and then work across all of the sts to pick up the wraps or work the double sts before working the 3NBO. If you just turned, without applying a technique, that may be why you have a hole.

    • @RoxanneRichardson
      @RoxanneRichardson  4 роки тому +1

      The chain is mirrored simply by starting each shoulder seam at the neck and working toward the arm. It doesn't roll the way a regular 3NBO would roll, so the visual difference when viewed from the front vs the back is very minor. On the other hand, any time you have an idea about something that you think might work (because you might like the result or process better) I would encourage you to try out your idea on a swatch and to see what you think. That's how knitters develop and refine techniques: by experimenting.

    • @RoxanneRichardson
      @RoxanneRichardson  6 років тому

      I use the standard method on the WS, when the RS is stockinette or stockinette-like, because it matches stitch patterns across the seam line perfectly. I use the knit/purl alternative when I want a RS decorative chain, as in the thumbnail for the video, because I don't personally like the large ridge (which is the standard "decorative" use of the 3NBO, and the one called for in the pattern for the garment shown in the thumbnail). My aesthetics are not always shared by everyone else, so there is no right/wrong way to use it.
