Excellent topic that isn't talked about enough. Dividends give you a stake in the companies success. Harvesting capital gains gives you a stake in "number go up". And that is actually a really profound difference in how the system impacts society.

I hope you’re right about a comeback for dividends.
Right now though, dividends structurally work against you relative to buybacks because of passive investing.
Passive funds greatly favor higher priced companies, and buybacks push that share price & market cap higher while dividends do not. This represents more than half of current stock market flows today.
