Would a few Galway Hookers, with canons, not be cheaper? More practical and reliable too? A handful of currachs to make up the 'fast reaction force'? Maybe more binoculars instead of the windy up radar thing they have. (Only works it daylight, at an altitude of10,000 feet. But it was cheap, second hand). Sure what do we need boats for anyways - we're only an island. Not like anyone's robbing our fish or dumping drugs into Europe from here... or worse - cheap cigarettes, handbag and designer knock-offs
Its a classic boat. This is good for shore patrols. With petrol hungry engines, it a liability; too small for a nuclear power plant. Her armaments except for the main deck gun are comparable to what you'd find on a light armor vehicle. I noticed she had a classic radiosonde? It seems so mismatched? Made for tight budgets, but sufficient as a law enforcer.

Navy couldn't defend a dingy. Where is there Any anti air weapons, anti sub or even ship to ship. Get outa it with heavily armed
Aaron Buckley thank You. I though I was only person to think this. Like nato recommends 2%. We don’t need a lot just some proper navy vessels and d Swedish aircraft the Griffin and larger army n rangers. Then we could be somewhat secure and not have to call the raf like when the Russian bombers entered Irish airspace last year.
The Oto Melara 76 mm cannon system is compact enough to be installed on relatively small warships, such as corvettes, avisos (a vessel somewhere in size between a corvette and a patrol boat), and patrol boats. The gun's high rate of fire and availability of specialised ammunition make it multirole capable for short-range anti-missile point defence, anti-aircraft, anti-surface, and ground support. Specialised ammunition includes armour-piercing, incendiary, directed fragmentation effects, and a guided round marketed as capable of destroying manoeuvring anti-ship missiles.[
Ireland should buy one of britains 13 type 23 frigates that are getting replaced soon, Britain sold chile three of them, stop being cheap Ireland and buy a frigate. And one of the first of Britains new type26 frigates is called Hms Belfast lol.
Ok fair enough, but Ireland should atleast buy one of britains type 23 frigates there's 13 going out of service soon, the British will upgrade them for you Irish first. Why not? And there's a few trafalgar class submarines the Irish can have for cheap aswell. Smaller nations have bigger weapons than Ireland.
Bulletproofcammy Yea I'm sorry I'm not a militant expert but Ireland I think should get Long lasting cheap and effective ships and submarines we don't need the fancy dancy shit the Americans have we Just need to be able to get lads off our island you know
@@bulletproofkam7931 We couldn't afford to run em. Our current defence budget allows each infantry man to throw 1 live hand grenade per year, those six rounds from the 75mm and burst from the 50 cal means no desert for entire defence force next Sunday.

+ERIK SAGER This vessel is more heavily armed than the RN's River Class Patrol Vessels which carry out the same coastal protection/fisheries protection/polution monitoring duties as this one. Its also about half the displacement.
+Taint ABird Well then I would think this is really a cost guard cutter and nothing more. A ship very capable for such duties. But noway is this a modern navel combat ship and never should be regarded as one. The fine young men and women serving aboard this ship will be in big trouble (god forbid) if a antiship missile or torpedo were to come their way.
+ERIK SAGER The Irish Navy performs tasks more akin to the US coastguard than, say, the US Navy, which is typical of most small non-NATO countries. But all navies have similar vessels for patrols in territorial waters and an anit-ship missile would be equally deadly to any of them. Thanks for pointing out the obvious though.
Maybe not on the same scale as the as the USN. Remember the USA spends 3.5 percent of GDP on defence. Ireland is not that poor of a county. You can afford three modern frigates and 3 diesel submarines. And a small modern airforce.
@Erik I'm inclined to agree with you, but there is not political will or appetite for expenditure on defence. Its simply not part of the narrative in Ireland.
The rivet counter in me would like to point out the inaccuracies in that report. The armament shown is actually: 76mm OTO Melara, .50 HMGs (NOT 20mm) and 7.62mm FN MAGs. Thank fuck. The Paddies won't be invading us soon.
0:40 ''Heavily armed ship'' Thats not a heavily armed ship it doesen't even have one rocket all it has is one 76 mm and two 20 mm cannons that's not heavily armed.
+Andro A You only need 'rockets' (I assume you mean missiles) for over-the-horizon combat. This is not such a ship - it is a patrol vessel which engages and inspects other vessels at close quarters.
Taint ABird Yes but the missile gunboat destroyes the patrol ship before they even see it coming. Missile gunboats also have cannons for CQ combat so they are better ships, albeit more expensive.
Andro A A gunboat is a gunboat. This is a gunboat. If it has missiles it is no longer a gunboat. Most missile bearing vessels are much larger than this and indeed the RN equivilent, which is less well armed than this is more than twice the size. Pound for pound it is a well armed ship.
Taint ABird In Croatia we use the classification 'missile gunboats' for fast attack ships carrying 8 long range cruise missiles and 50 meters in lenght. And this isn't a gunboat this is an offshore patrol vessel. This doesn't have much of an armour and it's about 65 meters long, so it's larger than a missile gunboat. Plus this was a RN ship in the past.

Its not a warship or air craft carrier it doesn't need 20 guns ! Light,Fast,Efficient.
“why do the navy need such a heavily armed vessel”

got me cracking up lol, a couple of machine guns lol
