Depth is going to be dependent on the Coil size.... as a general rule of thumb the depth approximates the diameter of one of the coils. As far as soil densities, that's going to be dependent on the coil frequency, this can be adjusted by placing a capacitor in parallel with the coil to alter the LC resonating tank frequency, but keep in mind you will need to apply the same value capacitor to each coil.
The coils in this simple proof of concept test are only 3.5 inches in diameter. As a general rule of thumb, the diameter of the coil equates to an approximate depth that you will be able to sense metal. Different coil geometries will have different effects, and some are much better than others. The general operation of this metal detector is a BFO which has its own particular limitations with ground depth penetration, but in answer to your question I would say generally yes it could be used.
Theorothically the signal can penetrate 5 times the diameter if the coil and the smallest object at 1/5th of the coil diamater can be detected at this distance but it requires a lot of fone tuning and it's only valid in air test. Now, I'm interestes in a PI metal detector that can go as deep as 8m to identity an object as big as a compact car. Can you design such a metal detector?
Just bought a pair. Maybe you can help me figure up a circuit to step up the coil power about 20x or more though. I'm looking to build a very large coil system for looking deep for large veins of non ferrous yet still be able to discriminate from black sand. Maybe even find or make some software that will allow 3d imaging on laptop later.
It would be the same formula you would use for the resonant frequency of a coil. You would need to know or measure the parasitic frequency of the coil, and know the inductance of the coil. For VLF the coil and or capacitance will be large. The lower the frequency, the larger the coil and or capacitor. What frequency are you talking about here?
Thanks for sharing this! This is rather intriguing. I dont want to drop $400 on a metal detector and see this works well. How long would the battery last? Do the schematics include how to make the coils? Thanks!

hello friend, first of all thanks for the video I was very surprised by the results. I want to buy only the schematic of the pcb, on ebay you sell it in 3 usd but I live in Colombia and because of how simple it looks I think I can assemble them with the schematic, I appreciate the attention and I hope we can make the purchase. thank you very much.

Just thinking Beau, maybe I have the components- if you can just tell me their names and values and how many I need of each then I'll just need to buy the 2 PCB boards from you. Yeah? Best, Jimmy

Hi Beau, Can you give me a price for the two pcb boards and all the other electronic components needed please? I'm finding the ebay schematic link hard to follow and read. I can't read their values from the photos as they're very poor quality when you try to zoom in. I think you said the coils are identical at 20 turns each. So I can make those myself , but I'm not sure what mm or gauge wire they are. Also the fine tuning closed loop - what size wire is it? I have a small amplified Radio Shack speaker and battery which should do fine. If you can give me a total price for the 2 pcb boards + components plus postage to Cork in Ireland then just send me a PayPal request and I'll send the money back to you straight away. Is that ok? Kind regards, Jimmy

Thanks for sharing this info Beau - Good to be in touch again!
Absolutely ! don't be such a stranger
Amazingly sensitive, Beau. Great job, thanks for sharing this!
Dude awesome discovery!
Greg, the wires are connected, it may just be hard to see them in the video. I encourage you to visit the eBay link.
Sir, can you give the diaghram how to make that kind of detector pls, thank you.
How this ca be a BFO if it has a DD coil ?
how many loop the copper was?

can you share me.. all of components and schematic diagram of this..?

They are the same... They should be made identical to one another. i.e. same number of turns, on the same coil form.
