All our life-changing guide dogs begin their journey at the Guide Dogs National Centre in Leamington Spa. We use several dog breeds in our world-class breeding programme so we can produce a diverse range of guide dogs to meet the needs of all the people we support.
In this video, Matthew Bottomley, Head of Breeding Operations, and Tom Lewis, Head of Canine Genetics, discuss the very first step of the journey of a guide dog: canine genetics and breeding.

As a guide dog owner of 19 years, I found this truly fascinating. All of the effort that has gone into making this video from the staff, to the volunteers, to everyone involved, a massive well done thumbs up. Looking forward to the next episode.

We couldn't own a dog due to space and time available and my daughter really wanted one so we decided to sponsor instead. We are now on our 4th pup. But ours lives have changed and are now considering a dog so are possibly looking to adopt a retired guide dog or one that has failed their training. Our house is about to have some work done so it will be the autumn

Adopting a dog is great! Labs make the best dogs for first time owners. If you've never had a dog, I recommend finding a retired service dog, they are already trained so it will make life a lot easier for you!

I'm a sighted person, but I am also disabled.
(CP). I have seen some guide dog partnerships on social media and it's unbelievable that a DOG is able to make decisions and support their person the same way a person will. Extremely cool. I am looking forward to learning more about how guide dogs become guide dogs. I had no idea that you hand pick dogs to be guide dog parents. Wow.

@@GuideDogsUA-cam I knew they were very important and life changing, but I don't think I quite understood the nuances of a guide dog partnership until I saw examples of them in action on social media. Absolutely amazing.

this video was wonderful to listen to. I have my incredible first guide dog, Spencer after loosing my sight in 2019. I cannot tell you the incredible difference he has made to my life, and also many people around me. I could never thank Guide Dogs and the many thousands of wonderful Staff, Volunteers and supporters that make all of this possible enough - I truly hope that everyone involved does feel very proud of what they collectively achieve. I cant wait to share this with my social media family... very much looking forward t the next video too x Guide Dog Team Spencer ( and me Terry ) x

When i got a puppy and tried potty training and teach few tricks to him then i got to know how tough it is to train a dog. I admire all the staff who are involve. You have to have a patience of a monk. It’s amazing

I'm so pleased that have come up with a way to show us all more of how everything works.i personal love everything about guide dogs and how you help so many people and children too.
Sadly where I live in South Kent,it's along way to get to your centre, have been invited 3 times and feel rude I can't come,as a volunteer and fundraiser. This give me a chance to see some of what I would see on a visit and some of the information I would take from it too.
    Thanks guys....looking forward to more.

As a guide dog owner of almost 19 years, I wouldn't have my freedom and independence if it wasn't for dedicated people like yourself, so thank you from me. Glad you loved the video as much as I did, it truly was fascinating stuff. X

@@GuideDogsUA-cam I have been fundraising for about 3years but in the last year have tried to do a lot more.before then I have always put my change into your pot at shops and voted via coins when it's been what charity to support.
I think it's due to my own disabilities and needing a support dog to help me through the days, and not being able to get one or have any support with training that I've always done it.and as I say last April I lost my support dog very quickly, took till September to get a puppy we are now training all by ourselves as noone will help us,just get fobbed off with an excuse of you can only train a do for one disability or to do one job. But I know from Lucy, who was a rescue dog that that's not that case, and even more with Lilly puppy who is only one this week.and she's doing amazing things. I think that's why I have tried to increase it. I'm planning a plant sale in June, just waiting for the seeds to grow. And I have been crocheting dog blankets, dont know where to send them,do you know?
So that when your pup's go to their puppy raisers they take a blanket with them that will smell of them, the breader did this with Lilly, but it was just a cheap small fleece blanket, but it made it easier for her to settle with that.
And I saw on another clip you showed and commented that I can make them if you would like and got a yes please.but no more then that.think I've made 10so far,as obviously I have to do them around everything with Lilly but when she's napping it's great to put the TV on and relax with some wool time as I call it.
Please can you let me know where to send or who to contact as I don't wanna just send to the breeding center and they not know what they are and get binned or something. Maybe being silly there but hard work time and money doea go into them as I'm sure you know,if you would like me to add a picture or something then I can do that.have Reyes to make them of a size that they definitely last till they are 9moneths,or about then going by Lilly the Labrador, and shes large at that so should be good sizes xx
