- Assemble your own electrical "kit"!
Stop searching around for all the tools and supplies you always need for those small but common electrical repairs and projects.
For automotive or home electrical projects, buy yourself a fishing tackle box and designate it your "electrical kit".
Keep all the specialized electrical tools and common supplies you need in it.
Every time you do an electrical project, think to yourself... "Do I use this tool or product frequently when doing this kind of project?" If the answer is YES, then start keeping that tool or supply in your box!
Also, don't "STEAL" from your box. Yeah you know you keep a screwdriver in there, and you need it for another non-electrical related project, but don't forget to put it back in your electrical only kit!
This is about having everything you need in one box; not rummaging around your garage or kitchen junk drawer just for a simple tool.
Here's what's in my box to get you thinking:
Wire strippers (the good kind! easy to use)
Wire cutter and crimper tool
Non-contact voltage tester (www.fluke.com/...)
Automotive circuit tester (KZYEE KM10 Power Circuit Probe Kit)
GFCI tester tool, with trip button
Snap-blade knife for cutting wiring insulation
Light-colored tape and a Sharpie for labeling wires (you won't remember where they go, so label them or take a pic with your phone)
Electrical tape
Wire nuts
Myriad butt connectors and eye connectors or ALL sizes.
Multi-meter tester
Pin removal tools for removing Packard-type terminals from connectors (automotive use)
Wire clamps and rings for securing wires
Zip ties!
Heat shrink tubing of various sizes
Self-solder butt connectors
Non-Insulated Open Barrel crimping tool
Small screwdrivers
Various grommets
Self-tapping tek screws and star lock washers (very useful for automotive grounds)
Automotive fuse removal tool, for the old glass tube kind, and the more modern blade-type fuses
Misc leftovers from previous projects
Other leftover items that are usually too big to keep in your kit, but you may want to keep handy in a separate box:
Coils of various wiring. For me this is mostly automotive wiring of different colors and diameters.
Heat gun for heat shrink tubing and those solder butt connectors.
Larger leftover supplies like conduit fittings, receptacles, junction boxes, etc.
Outstanding idea!
Glad you think so! It has saved me many times, and made things so much simpler.
