Are you kidding me?

Right? lol
Did 3 years of cargo. Its a good exercise. Gained weight afterwards.. No good..
As a ramper I Laughed out Loud. Also split shift is a hard pass for me and I'm on the ground.
I was with LTL freight company, but driving trucks and not flying. And as well as driving, we also had to "work freight", loading and unloading the trailers. And we did get "items" of freight that was out of the ordinary and interesting all the time. And with the air freight I would imagine the freight to be just as varied if not more so. Items sent on air freight are there because of the need for quick transit. This makes me think of items that could be expensive, rare, of great priority, of high necessity, and in many other ways that made them this item of high priority to ship fast at a higher cost.
I imagine that someone from HR was behind you with a gun as you made this video.
Guns are not allowed on planes. It was electrodes to his nipples. Could be positive reinforcement though - a promise of 6.5 hours of sleep between shifts!!!

Respect for cargo Metro aircraft pilots! This is a notoriously difficult aircraft to fly and requires a lot of hands-on flying.

I keep reading this, "notoriously difficult". Why? I didn't find it all that difficult to fly, and I am as average a pilot as you can find.
. This aircraft was not equipped with autopilot, and flying through turbulence, bad weather or other conditions is extremely tiring and exhausting, because you need to have ' hands on ' control all the time. Very easy aircraft to fly in favourable weather conditions though.
Came here from the mid air collision. I don't know how the Key Lime aircraft was able to take off in the first place despite the pilots giant balls of steel. He kept cool while flying a convertible plane!
He did not know the origin of the problem but he remembered rule #1 fly the airplane.

Personally I think your company should add in autopilots etc to improve safety margines for yourselves the aircraft and freight carried...imo Laurie
My dad flew cargo. Said they didn’t install autopilots because that 7 pounds adds up over 5 planes and a year of flying.
Ryan Padgett at least they could save weight putting in glass and getting rid of vacuum pumps. Might be enough weight saved for an autopilot. I imagine the most weight of the autopilot comes from the trim servos. Are these planes manually trimmed?
Autopilots add to the aircraft. Not so much the weight but the complexity and there for the maintenance costs. To retrofit an exsisting qircraft could cost over half a million dollars per plane.
Erik De Lamarter not really sure about the trim but all that would cost a lot of money that these companies don’t really want to fork over
Very few places that fly Metro's have autopilots. Whether cargo or not. Been at 3 different companies with metros. At the current one we have a couple that still have autopilots. Usually when they break though most companies just say "no more autopilot sorry". Not sure if the Metro's is specifically difficult compared to other turboprops.
I faced many rough times in life and I still motivate my self to become a pilot one day
@toasty cinnamon depends on the school, to get a cpl usually 6-18 months

“Unloading the boxes is the fun part!” Dude - really? 🤣😂
Man I’m 25 years old, now kids, no wife, and have 10k to my name. I dream of being in your shoes, I don’t know where to start. Left community college 6 years ago, this is an inspiration. Maybe one day will cross path, I want to be a pilot so bad but my lack of confidence holds me back
*no kids
I started out flying mostly cargo on C208's in Alaska in the 90's. It was actually some of my most fun flying. I"m at Delta now and making a lot more money, but sometimes wish I could be back there.
Full days work and another $125 bucks minus taxes in your pocket...Key lime you rock!
Mate. Your day is exactly the same as a Metro driver in New Zealand working for Air Chathams. Cheers.
Worked at Sweringen Aircraft San Antonio 1972-1975.
We built quarter panels, fuselage, nose gear, wings, good to see II's and III's are still around
I fly a jet for a regional. Watching this makes me glad I have my job. :)
“Unloading boxes is always a fun part of the job for me” ☠️
Haha the truth!
Nice in depth video. I worked at DHL and we called these planes feeders. They would bring cargo from smaller airports to LAX overnight. We had a contract with Ameriflight that had similar/same planes as Key Lime but with no windows. I didn't know pilots touched freight thought the rampers loaded/unloaded...😃
Somebody sounds like a key lime air recruiter, nothing about this is glamours 😂😂😂... talking about SRM will skyrocket 😂😂
Trust me. You pay your dues flying the metro III. Nice Key lime air offers a real crew house. Back in the day it was static motorhomes/ 5th wheels...lol
Yeah okay, this is great and all. But the real question is..... How much Key Lime Pie can you carry?
Jake Hoodock I was about to make this joke
@@swedishkappa1051 ahhh Beat you to it ;)
I used to do that in the 1980's in Aero Commanders and others. No autopilot, no copilot, no GPS, yes scud running and lots of fun..
Great job, you can be single pilot however i think it would be safer with a good GPS and an autopilot.
I agree and disagree with different aspects of the video.
I AGREE that this is the best stivk you'll ever be in your career... The FOs I get who come from places like Ameriflight are great pilots.
I DISAGREE with going single-pilot hard IFR with no autopilot. That is just begging for trouble. Dual crew with no ap, or single pilot with a functioning AP, both completely doable.

Thank you for this. Congratulations! You're living the dream.
Not a pilot, but the only thing I see glamorous about this job, is the beautiful plane in green.
That's pretty intense. Flying single pilot in actual IMC no autopilot is pretty taxing on the aviator. I understand people do it all the time (I personally dont care for it) but as other people have commented your company should get autopilot installed. Its safer. Thanks for this video.

No commercial aviation in my country without 1st officer and AP. Thats the way it is. Becoming a commercial pilot here is a long, arduous and expensive process. As a consequence we have the highest safety record in the world. You are looking at 2000 hrs before you get in the left seat.
My husband (ex) use to fly metro liners 4 out of Miami to Atlanta everyday and dead head back .. pay was great !! But he would never be at home !!
And he missed out on our little ones grow !! And then he found someone else !! And left us
Hand flying is essential.. however, the practice of Single Pilot IFR in a demanding aircraft with low time pilots and high turn around sounds like a failure in the companies SMS. Available safety vs. Actual safety is no good

My local airport runs one of these and you always double-check the seatbelt lol, far more clunkers than good landings, and the way it sways under deceleration makes it feel as if it is going to tip onto its wings.
I have 23 years in with UPS and am a basic PPL pilot with over 100 hours, I always heard about small companies that did the flights for UPS cargo and bam, here it is for the Colorado area! Unloading is something I did at 17 and 18, crazy as a pilot you have to be the one who unloads. I think I'd rather fly the passengers but that's my own dream and someone has to do the job:)

Solo hand flying is the absolute best way to build and hone your skills as a Pilot.
Your judgement, decision making, planning, etc, will be improved way more than if you were two crew flying with an automatic pilot engaged.
Thank you for sharing this video.
You’re totally incorrect. Anyone flying a metro should already know how to fly. Stick skills are just a small part of flying for a living.
@@c208driver6 I respectfully disagree.
Of course the Pilot should already know how to fly the aircraft, to think otherwise is irrational!
The Pilot is hand flying a Metro, Night and SPIFR, these skills are a large part of him living to fly again!
c208 Driver it’s better to feel the stick and response of the control surfaces to get used to it at first but you are right they should be experienced already
I see Key Lime every day, working at DIA. Thanks for making this video. I need to get my Instrument and Commercial and see about Key Lime. Blue skies and clear air!
Nice video. I started on Aero Commanders in 1979 hauling bank mail and packages. It was the right time to get started as I advanced quickly. I recently retired as a 747 Capt. I had a great run. I flew SA226/227's in '81/'82. Had fun with them.
I’m flying Aero Commanders hauling bank mail and freight today, those Aero Commanders have been a workhorse for many decades!
I worked at Stapleton (DEN) in 81, 82. Rocky Mtn Airways, and Pioneer Aviation. Pioneer flew metros, that we used to start with a GPU . Scary stuff, especially at night.
Dude, I think you fly over my house all the time going into Durango. I live outside of Bayfield CO off HWY 160 and started seeing this bright green Fairchild metro flying over every morning a couple of months ago. It's a loud one. I come running outside every time to check it out.
Oh cool… Keylime air, the same airline that is being accused of ignoring multiple mechanical and safety issues of their airplanes
What's the whole story?
Worked on Metros 30 years ago they like to leak. Fuel!!

A Pilot’s Life for Me
Thanks for watching and commenting. 😎
Wow I flew those in the 80’s for Britt airways. What a pos aircraft! How many times did you have to taxi to find a flat place to open the door? The main doors on those jam if aircraft twists. The engines on ours constantly had temp problems in the summer months. They took waaaaaay to much runway when hot outside. Single engine work was a joke. Good luck your going to need it!
At 5:00 am Cargo pilots don't say "Good morning", they say "Good night" ;-)
I'm a commercial pilot with 271tt and I want to be a cargo pilot.
MileHighFirebird How much Instrument time and night time did you have going into this job? I know you were a banner tow pilot so how did that play in? I’m assuming you didn’t have too much bc you were predominantly a VFR low and slow stick and rudder pilot as opposed to a CFII or something. Did that hinder you at all going into Key Lime and do you recommend me become a CFII and work on my Instrument skills or does key like straighten you out either way?
@@CommercialPIC just saw that you responded after watching this video again. If you know anyone needing a banner pilot please let me know. I do not have a tail wheel enforcement though.

Almost exactly LOL It's way cheaper to be a trucker to start. They have a Metroliner that flies out of DFW that hauls Chicks. Its pretty rough.

No sure I see the fulfillment in stacking boxes. What I do see is the challenge of flying single pilot, with older technology and no AP. It would elevate a pilot’s multitasking skills for sure. But, it sure seems that adding an AP would reduce pilot fatigue and make for increased safety. Navigating via ADF’s and using slide rules is a skill many of us had to learn, but not sure I would want to go back to it full time. Good video though. Safe skies !

The "funniest" part of this is that UPS truck drivers are highly unionized and are among the highest paid in the industry. Pilots... race to the bottom. :-( Shame on you, UPS!!!

How do you fly single pilot IFR with no autopilot? And why if it’s single pilot are you wearing FO stripes and sitting in the right seat???
MileHighFirebird I am surprised in the USA single pilot IFR would be allowed without an autopilot. It’s not legal up here in commercial ops. 2 crew or autopilot for IFR.

The music is loud and awful, and you say single pilot but it looks there are two pilots on that cockpit!
Single pilot IFR with no autopilot. Is this why the Metroliner is featured in more Air Disasters episodes than any other plane?
Yeah, it's not an ideal plane to fly. It just requires a lot more skills from the pilots.
@@CommercialPIC Thanks for the video BTW. I'm not a real pilot but the Metroliner is one of my all-time favorite planes in X-plane so I love watching videos of the real thing. I've even got the Key Lime Air livery for it. :)
You have to load and unload your own airplane? And you fly single pilot. That is crazy. That is a demanding aircraft.
Yeah it was crazy.
Very nice video production.
Great video! Thanks for the upload!
I can understand single pilot operations but, no auto pilot?? Way too much work load for one and in busy airspace, nightmare.
I am grew up at AEJ (as a pilot you will know where this is lol ) and I wish there was flight like Key Lime Air that flt to my home airport!

Just building up those hours to move into the commercial people movers. Hopefully with a copilot and autopilot.
I bet when you go out to places like KRIL and KASE you have gone missed on a few occasions. Minimums are kinda high AGL.

A Pilots Life for Me
Great video man. Hope to meet you out there one day.
Wow, good to see some San Antonio sewer pipes still out there earning their keep. Last time I had the pleasure of working on one was in 1997 when Skywest retired our last one. Will always be my favorite airplane of all times. Keep those Sa227's flying forever! Do you have any SW's in your fleet?
I fly the A330-200F but this looks way more fun!

Nice trip Captain. good luck
A 3 stripper is a first officer and. 4 stripper is a captain. I think 135 signal pilot IFR operations required a 3axis autopilot. At least it did when I flew. BE 18 for the postal service.

worked for 3 airlines that flew the metros britt mid-continent and trans world express also worked for great lakes and my favorite 19 seater the 1900
Very Nice Video and Channel - Thanks for sharing 👍at our airport we can see some Saab 340 Cargo Aircraft, from Airest
Two pilots or single pilot with dual channel autopilot. Can’t imagine an engine fire at night bad weather single pilot, how many people has to die to do something???
Hopefully 0. Thank for your input! 😎
"...regarded as some of the best aviators in the industry..." Sorry dude, please stop this bullshit! By what do you justify to be a better pilot than I am for example? (I'm a cargopilot aswell, but flying some heavy metal ;) ). I don't know if all of this is scripted, but i it comes out of your head, you should get a different mindset! Believing to be "one of the best aviators" can make you become a dead pilot very soon! It's about learning, progressing and building up experience every day! The more you know, the better you can handle different situations, the better your general skill gets. But you will never be "one of the bets aviator in the industry". You will learn something new every day.
Stay safe and please get rid of this cowboy attitude ;)
Chrismiss damn your boring

Single pilot multi without auto-pilot - Mountains, dark nights, rain and gusting cross winds, whow! 1950s character building flying, do they still do this?
Awesome !!!
I'm PPL
Crongrats from Brazil
Good recruiting vid, except for music ( make music editor jog around plane 10 times in rain) This is a young pilots game, long hrs/away from home/loading boxes.....used to work in the freight business years ago with twin Cessna's, 206's,172's (mostly in maintenance) it was good at the time but wouldn't do it now. If a person can find an aviation job Mon. Through Fri. in daylight hrs with weekend /holidays off you will be in a much better position and golden :)

@ 6:17 "So that's why my package arrived broken!"
I get that corporate types might not want that sort of thing shown, but I have FAR more trust and respect for an operator who can "be real" about the realities of this work. Props (no pun intended) to Firebird for keeping that moment in. :) Dug the video.
