I bought this on sale 2 years ago, put it away and never touched it until about 10 days ago. Even though I had it, I still brooded 6 or 7 batches of chicks with the old fashioned lamp. We have a special brooder set up in the barn with a thick wooden arm screwed into the wall and the heat lamp attached to the arm like 5 different ways so, it can’t fall. Anyway, we had kid goats under that brooder lamp when the chicks arrived so, I pulled out this Producer’s Pride brooder and was instantly amazed at how large it is. I thought the size of the box was from packing materials. I’ve been so pleased with it. I don’t think I’ll ever go back to lamps. I bought mine in the fall for $19.99 so, if you’re already done brooding for the season, I’d try and catch it on sale or clearance.
That’s a great price! I’ll have to keep an eye out for sales on them. I love this one!
Glad to see this. I have 3 of them. Love, love ,love mine. I use one as a brooder and the other 2 in my coop for the older chickens to rooster under on cold days. My light is always on when it is turned on. Also if they get too big and you still need it, my hubby cut pvc pipe into legs to slip up the legs to raise it slightly higher. My babies are growing so much and it is still cold here in Wyoming. They need just a little warmth through the chilly nights. There is a difference in temp from brooder to heater- try it with your hand to feel it.
These work great.
I really like mine so far! I think I will use it in the heater function this winter. I propped mind up on bricks to raise it, but the PVC pipes are a great idea. Thanks for sharing!
@@ChickenHues You might check out another flat heater called the SWEETER HEATER.It comes in three different sizes and works on the same principle as this one. I believe it is made here in the US. I had already bought my PRODUCERS PRIDE heaters when I learned of it. Just an FYI. SMILES TONIA
I have this for my serama chicks. It works really well, and they really like it. I have mine at medium height even though my chicks are tiny. I'm really glad that I found this at TSC.
I love mine! I’m glad to hear that it works well
For you, too!
I used this for my baby silkies I hatched from my incubator and they did great. They are now 4 weeks old. Lower it all the way down so they are touching it and move it up in about 2 weeks as they get bigger. I got more hatching Wednesday so I’m going to get another one. So glad I didn’t have to use a heat lamp! Definitely recommend this!
Thanks for your comment!
I have this heat plate also and love it. I also love the size and the price.
Thats so cool.. never seen a heating plate like this.. maybe it will be good for an outdoor shelter for kitties too.. thanks for sharing
It does look like it works for cats! lol If he keeps it up he may find himself outside in the cold with one of those. LOL (Not really!)
@@ChickenHues LOl oh no .. he is just showing how the cat use it.. see he is becoming a great co host.. he is sooooooo cute.. and naughty
I was thinking about this when the chicks are too big for this.
I bought one and I really like it. Much safer than the light.
i actually used the heater for my chickens in the winter and it actually got pretty warm. Not overbearingly hot but perfect. I almost wanted to move into the coop with them. I may get another one this year as i built a much larger coop.
They work well and it would definitely keep a smaller coop cozy!
Nice heat plate find. I think the chicks will love it but since they're growing so fast, they might not use it very long. I see the little cat is pushing his limit, ha. He knows you'll still love him regardless what he does (smile). Enjoyed a full-watch, Stace. Baah!
They seem to really like it and slept under it last night. Yes, the cat is determined to get in there every chance he gets. I think Steve gave him an extra tap on the head if you caught that. LOL
@@ChickenHues Yep, sure did.
This is the one I recently got. I wish it had something that went on top to keep poop off it. I did put some contact shelf liner on it that helped. Just pull it off and put in the trash.
That’s a great idea! I may try that, too!
Got Lost Acres ~ I’m glad to have seen your comment about the shelf liner. I’ve had a roll of liner in the kitchen drawer for years. I saw you mention it to cover the brooder and it’s working like a charm. Thank you!
I am using a piece of plywood and lay it over the top of it. Then just take it off and clean it. But thinking I may try your I idea.
How do you clean it? Ours is very dirty. I regret that we did not cover it with foil or something similar.
They can get dirty. I use a scrub brush on the top. I also have to lower my expectations of it ever looking perfect again. Lol
@@ChickenHues Thanks. That helps. I wasn't sure if I would damage it by scrubbing it. I will find the box and see if it has any directions for cleaning.
That's a very interesting heating plate mam, I may need to give my local TSC a look, that ya for sharing this!! Dan
Thanks for watching, Dan! It's always amazing how TSC has neat things for me to try and spend money on. ;) This is working great, though, and I appreciate that they carry them!
This is 2 yr old video, but they still sale this heater/brooder. Mine has stopped working, my chickens are going on 2 yrs this March, I used it as a brooder for them and as a heater during cold weather days. I am getting new chicks this year, tried plugging it in---not heating up. So, plan on this not lasting and buying a new one, I went with just a brooder from Rent a coop.
I’d love to hear how your new one works.
I was just looking at that in Tractor Supply a couple days ago might have to get one
So far it’s working great. The chicks seem to really like it and all sat under last night over the other one.
@@ChickenHues I think instead of hatching this year I'm going to order chicks. The reason being I think we might have had Marek's disease on the property so I pretty much need to have them vaccinated if they come in New and I plan on having like 45 chicks this spring so if I hatch my own that would be really hard to vaccinate them myself. Especially the way the vaccine mix works it only lasts for like an hour once you mix it. So that means that I would pretty much have to have all 45 chicks hatch at the same time lol. So at least for this spring I'm going to order chicks instead already vaccinated
@@Jake-sz2ij That sounds like a very wise plan! Marek's is a big deal. What kind of chicks are you going to get?
@@ChickenHues I think we are going to order a bunch of different kinds Barred Rock buff orpington Americana Rhode Island red speckled Sussex ECT. five of each and I'm getting like 45 Birds. I'm figuring on around 30 or 35 of them being meat birds and then when we get close to butchering we will pull out 5 or ten of the best-tempered hens to put in our egg layer pin
Nice. I like the versatility
I do, too! Not sure if I’ll use it as a heater but it’s worth a try now that I have it.
I got one today from TSC with 12 chicks. So far so good, will update this post in a few days.
Great! I really like mine!
If placed on its side, and touches some pine shavings, is it a risk of a fire ?
I don’t think it gets that hot, but try not to have it making direct contact. Are you using the little legs to prop it up?
Best baby chicken brooder/ heater around… mines been outstanding for 3 seasons and plenty of life for many more
Thanks for sharing!
I do thirty chicks to one heat plate I have for of them they are great
I bought one last week for my chicks(first time chicken pare). The only thing I don't see or understand, if we're supposed to decrease the temperature every week. How is that done? I can't find any info on that. And how warm is it. Can I get a thermostat for it?
It’s a little with the heat plate since they only go under there to warm up. There isn’t any need to adjust the temperature because the chicks will just go under less and less as they get older. The important thing is to just keep raising it as they grow so they can continue to run underneath it. This works much like a broody hen - instead of controlling the ambient temperature, the chickens run under to warm up when they get cold.
It has adjustable legs on it, 3 levels. Then it can be used upright for adult hens in coop on cold days.
Is it cheaper then the other? And very interesting that you can also use as a heater. Definitely food for thought. Thanks for sharing.
Yes, it’s cheaper! The small one like I have is $50-$60 plus shipping. I was thinking I could attach this one to the side or top of a cage in winter when I need to bring a chicken inside.
Nice versatility. I’m going to look for this one!
It seems to working great for the price so far!
Do you use the hotter setting on the 4 legs? Trying to see if that is safe or not
I use the brooders setting for brooding chicks.
Did this make your power bill go up a lot more? I really need to know how much this runs the power bill up. Thanks
My incubator makes it go really high. I’m not sure how much these do. It’s 200 watts.
So I can use this for my ducklings instead of the heat lamp?
I have never had ducks, so I’m not sure. Hopefully someone can comment that knows.
Where i can buy that?
Online or at Tractor Supply (TSC). Other farm stores may sell them as well.
Thank you
Thank you for watching!
I've heard that these dont get hot enough for day old chicks, did you have any issues getting it to 95 degrees?
I didn’t check the temperature but went by how the chicks acted. They did fine and never let on like they were cold. I used it in an attached garage.
Sebastian Marroquin ~ I didn’t check the temperature under mine either but, all the chicks have been happy under it. My friend breeds a lot of different breeds and sells thousands of chicks each year. She bought a bunch of these when they were on clearance and grabbed one for me. She uses them year round out in her barn and hasn’t had any issues with the chicks not getting warm enough. I’m only using mine for the first time this year but, I’ve been using heat lamps out in our barn year round for about 15 years and honestly, the only time, our brooder has ever gotten to 95 degrees is in the heat of summer but, my chicks are always comfortable and quiet. Using this for the first time has been so easy. The bunch I’m brooding right now were under it as day olds. We had several nights in the low to mid 40’s and they were all content when I went out to check on them. My friend has been using them year round for well over a year now and her chicks do just fine out in the barn under one of these.
I’ve got 28 chicks arriving in a couple of weeks. Do you think this heater would be big enough for all of them?
Yes, especially at the beginning! It should be fine all the way through as long as they aren’t in really cold area.
You might want to look into one called the Sweeter Heater, it comes in three sizes. Same principal as this one.
Thanks for sharing !!
Thank you for watching!
Do you leave it turned on all the time?
Yes! The chocks come and go from under it as they need.
that new one looks like it about twice as big as the older ones.
It sure is! They all fit under there last night, too. I may take the other one out for now.
I just bought this today for my new baby chicks and it isn't getting hot enough, 71degrees is not warm enough for 4 day old chicks.
Do you have it on the brooder setting and is it low enough - the chicks should just be able to get under. If they’re quiet under it then they’re warm enough - even if it’s only 71 at ground level. If they’re peeping then they’re cold.
Is this safe to have with bedding
Yes! Totally!
Pretty grey chicks what breed are they?
They are Lavender Ameraucanas. They’re my favorites! Thanks, Linda!
Chicken Hues ...nice!!! Ive never seen them.
Any thoughts after using this heater for a year?
I love it! I like it better than the more expensive heat plates.
It goes out after a year, plan on buying one every 1.5-2 yrs.
I just bought this today, will report back!
I’d love to know what you think!
How did it work for you? Got mine today and not pleased at all. The light goes out and plate gets cold and chicks are cold then I have to turn it off and back on the start reheating.
Nice👍
I just set mine up. The heat function seems to be working fine but the brooder heat isn't warm enough. It's hanging out at 78 degrees under the lowest level. That's too cool for hours old chicks. Has anyone else had this issue? I'll take it back for an exchange this morning. It's been in the box well over a month... Hopefully they'll exchange it..
Are the chicks acting cold and peeping? Go by how they’re acting, not by the temp reading. Plates work differently than normal room temperature. They need to get under and warm up, not necessarily sit in 99 degree air.
it was a lot bigger than the old one, the cat wanted to help
He sure did! His idea of “help” is a little different than mine. Lol. Thanks for watching!
I have the same one well 10 of them lol and love them.
So far the chicks seem to love them! I really like the size!
Great video but I have a question not related to the brooder... how do you keep your cat from attacking the chicks?! I just got my first chicks today and the same model brooder from TSC but my cats are going nuts to get after them. I've done a few quick searches and can't find anything on training cats to leave chickens alone, figured I'd ask someone with chickens and cats for advice, lol.
A lid! I suppose a cat could be trained, but it would be hard since their purpose in life is to catch little things. Lol My cat still spends most of his time “babysitting” chicks in the brooders, but fitted lids keep them safe.
Does it need to be on brooder or on heater thanks
Brooder for chicks like I have it set up. Thanks!
Chicken Hues thanks for answering I’m new at this thanks again for the help
Chicken Hues oh sorry to bother but do you need to keep checking the temperature on it or just leave it on that setting and they’ll be fine?
living in a fixer upper Watch then and listen. I don’t check the temp, but maybe should. If they seem happy and are moving around they’re fine. If they’re peeping and bunches up they’re probably cold. Just make sure it’s at the correct height for them to run under and it should be fine. I’m happy to help!
Nice upload
Stay connected always my friend
I put a leg on wrong and idk how to get it off
I’ve done that. It’ll come off- keep trying.
So it's basically Ohia brooder 2.0 :3
I bought one. Used it once n it stopped working.
Sorry to hear that. :(
I have this and my chicks poop on top of it all day. Only go under it at night.
Sounds about right! The older they get, the less they need the heat.
E in italiano?
Hm
