Very nice set and thanks for posting it. I am just getting back into Techno and your technique is impeccable. I have a Traktor S8 and Maschine MK3 and Machine Jam. I just voted for you.
Thank you!!! I havnt used Machine, but it’s very intriguing. Syncing Traktor with your own sounds is such a game changer.
This is sick bro
Thanks Owen!
🔥 as always but this might be my fave. Thanks for insights into your workflow and im a fan of how its progressd. You answered a few questions above. Are all your effects from Traktor internal and the Px5? Can Abeltons effects be routed thru the mixer''s send/return?
Hey! Thanks for the feedback.
Channels 1-3 just have Traktor effects on them, although i might have used the PX5 effects here or there.
Channel 4 which runs Ableton has send/returns on each of the Ableton tracks (controlled by the Novation Launch Control), which I use quite a bit. Of the 4 sends, I used Valhalla Delay, Valhalla Room, Abelton Delay and Portal.
The PX5 (XONE:96 can too) has the ability to route Ableton send/returns to each of the 4 channels on the mixer, which is AMAZING, but I couldn't do it this time because you need to use channels 9/10 on the mixer...which is also the channels you use to digitally record the mix! So next time if I use an actual device like a zoom recorder out of the record out, I'll be able to do it...so the next mix will be an improvement.
Sick set. How do you do these cool video effects?
Thanks!! I use Adobe premiere. I have a membership to motionarray.com which has a huge library of video effects and transitions.
Amazing set as always....I'm wondering how can you do such a set without headphones cues? Do you remember each and every track and you prepare all the hotcues before?
Thanks!
I set cue points on a few tracks to ensure the phrasing is exactly where i want it ahead of time, but for most of them i just start the track when i feel like it. I made a video on how to get the best phrasing if you want to check it out.

I hope this answered your question!
Thanks for sharing! How are you finding using Ableton to spice things up vs Remix Grids from your previous work flow? Any early pros or cons? Lo es your previous setup vids so this change is super interesting.
Thanks for asking!
With the remix grids, i was restricted to sample pack samples that i'd load in, or take 1 bar samples from other tracks. The remix grids gave me only 4 columns.
With Ableton, i'm able to have 8 columns or "tracks" as they are called. Each track is dedicated to a wider array of sounds, kick, bassline, hats, claps, perc loops, synth loops, atmosphere and risers, etc. All the sounds I use in Ableton are my own sounds i've created for the hybrid set...so much more creativity. I'm able to do so much more with these sounds by adding envelope automation, better EQing, etc. I have access to all the effects so the possibilities are endless.
This was a great exercise creating this, now all these sounds I made are available to turn into real tracks, something i'm focusing on now :)
I guess the only con would be it's more work to setup if i take this to a show...which i havn't done yet. Small price to pay
@ thanks for getting into the details! I’m in a similar path. So far so good, keeping it simple in Ableton to 8 channels, and testing with Move instead of Push.
@MontanaProducciones oh have fun with move! It looks pretty cool!
i'm pretty sure this counts as in the hardgroove realm!! or swedish techno?
did i ever tell you the story of when i was in '05 stockholm to buy records and was all "do u have swedish techno?!?!" and got a "u mean scandanavian techno? nah, it's over. but the section is over there" which was less than one shelf. so heart broken lol
Hey! I wouldn't say this is hardgroove really...I focused more on hypnotic sounds with kind of a stripped back vibe. I do love good hardgroove, which is more 90's techno sounding, harder and thumping. Hope you are doing well Mr Ball
really interesting set mate stumbled upon your channel from wanting to create a et up like yours im wondering how to go about the audio routing etc if you have the time to reply would love you to walk me though your set up i own two k2s a push 2 & ddj rx rekordbox user for the time being
thanks in advance if you get back to us
Hey! While I’m a Traktor user, i believe there are mappings for K2s with Rekordbox. I sync Traktor and Ableton together using their link functions, I’m not sure what rekordbox can offer.
To be honest, selling your DDJ and buying a DJ mixer, and switching to Traktor would be my advice. Traktor is much more geared towards hybrid DJ sets than Rekordbox. But if you like the idea of using CDJs with Ableton, that’s cool too! I’m just don’t know Rekordbox enough to know if that can even happen
Which mixer do you think is better for Traktor? PX5 or 900NXS2? I mean the sound and playing (not the connections/connectors).
PX5 hands down. Tested the sound quality back to back with the Pioneer Nexus2 and it’s noticeably better. Sounds better than A9 too. The PX5 is also cheaper. It’s got a sound card that’s compatible with Traktor too, so just plug it in and away you go.
How did you gain stage each track in Ableton?
great question! It's a bit different than producing an actual track, where gain staging needs to be way more meticulous as each track needs to be a certain levels to compromise for other sounds happening in the mix.
First and foremost, this is DJing. Channels 1-3 on my mixer are for other peoples music, and channel 4 on the mixer is for Ableton. So I care less about the gain staging in Ableton and more about my levels on the mixer while i'm in the mix. Each Ableton channel is controlled by the launch control (bottom right), which has a volume fader for each track and a high pass filter knob as well. So technically, i'm gain staging live...which is just what you do as a DJ
That's not to say i've put a ton of work into the Ableton project for each sample i've made. I've got limiters on each track in Ableton as well as in main because in a live setting, things can go haywire if i bump a send up with a delay, last thing I want to do is ruin people ears (or mine!). Also, i'll make sure each sample peaks pretty close to 0db, so the limiter is just there in case.
If you'll notice i'm not actually playing any songs from Ableton, just samples, grooves, percussion that go with each track, effects to create tension, that kind of thing. So there's never more than 3 or 4 tracks out of 8 going at a time...less if there's more going on for the music channels.
So long story short, i'm gain staging in the mix.
Also, this is my first go at this, my workflow could and likely will down the road.
Cheers!
@djbonlando hey much appreciate the breakdown.
Use Traktor and a K2 with Xone43c, but I have the akai force where as you use the push. I've got the akai midimix which would act like your launch control..
Some really good setuo ideas, thanks!
