thanks so much, a quick and effective video for a blouse pattern I just made, and now I can make it fit so much better next time, thanks again, appreciate!
Colleen, you are a life saver. I have had trouble with this gaping for a long time and did not know how to change it. I will give this method a try. Thank you x Jackie
Love your blog Colleen - there is never a sewing session that I don't reference one of your videos. Could you do a tutorial on gapping BACK neckline, and why it would occur. I face this problem with all my patterns and cannot seem to fix it
Hi, liked your way of adjusting a neckline but my problem is where the neckline scoops at the cleavage point, please can you tell me how to solve this problem. Many thanks Eileen
Hi Colleen. Thanks for the very informative video. I have a question. If the neckline is gaping at the centre front how would I remove the excess? Or would it work to reduce it from say half way between the centre front and shoulder?
I eventually lifted up the neckline by 1cm at the shoulder, on the neck edge only, and reduced the centre fold by .5cm, squaring down to smoothen the front fold line and it worked like a charm!
Hello Colleen. Nice tutorial. I have a concern, this reduction method may make the neckline a little too high. would you recommend trueing it downwards to lower the neckline? thanks.
Great tutorial ! I had this issue with a dress toile today ! I've darted the amount of gape but has no idea how to get rid of the dart! With your adjustment do I need to adjust the arm hole ?
Thank you Colleen! I recently had this problem when working with a woven; I Googled for an answer and found this video. I will be using this tutorial on my next bodice pattern. Does this technique also work for knits?
I have been hunting for a how to make an a-line dress with cutouts like I have seen on tv a lot. How do you do that? You do such a great job I thought you might know how. Thank you for your wonderful videos. I have learned a lot from you.
They are on chest of the dress. I have seen it on dresses on some of the TV news ladies and on the show face off. It looks like they are all faced but I can't figure out how. I saw one with cut out coming down from the shoulders like the letter U and one was a slit across the top of the chest. They have a normal neckline but with the slits. I'm sorry if I am not very clear. Clear as mud as my grandma would say. :)
Hi, just watched you vlog, I have a problem with gaping, but not where you altered it, my is gaping right in the centre of my chest,if I alter the pattern its almost like a dart, its about 5/8th of an inch, but because my bust is bigger, I cant gradeate it down, if that makes sense. I would appreciate if you have any solutions. Thank you.
Jackie F It would be nice if they answered since she said to ask any questions. This is the same question I have. Did you find anyone to answer how to fix the gape in the center?
This seems like it works for the neckline but now the armhole seems altered. Do I need to alter the sleeve pattern and also how do I make a new neck facing?
I have two questions about this tutorial: 1) pivoting the neckline changes the shoulder seam angle. Do I have to change that to the back part of the pattern too? 2) does that change in the shoulder seam affect the armhole fitting? I'm trying to make a v-neckline properly and I have tried it so many times, but there's always a ugly gaping there.
In answer to your questions - 1 - The shoulder section will not need to be changed. 2 - It shouldn't. The alteration to the neckline should not effect the shoulder or armhole.
@@DeeDee-mo6tn the angle of the shoulder seam on the front piece will change, this is what's supposed to happen, it shouldn't effect the armhole or the fit at the shoulder seam... Unless you've taken a massive amount of excess fabric out, which would probably mean other fit issues are at hand.
Can this also be used to make the armhole portion of a high halter blouse (like the one you're wearing) sit flat? I've been trying to sew one for a while but always end up with a dart because of big bust with smaller shoulders, I really don't like darts there.
Hello Shree. I think it may be the case that you will have to adjust the neckline and the armhole, to get the fit you are looking for. I would do a test first before cutting into your fashion fabric. Let me know how it works out. Thanks for sharing.
I'm trying to figure out if my neckline is too large or if it's gaping. its a scoop neck style neckline (with a button placket down the middle) and when I stand up straight it looks fine. But when I lean over you can easily see down my shirt. I'm about to make a dress version of this top but I want to adjust the neckline on it so I don't have the same issue as the top I've already made. But I'm not sure which fix is right. Would it be a gaping neckline or just a too big neckline where I need to raise the entire thing? I have no darts in it currently as I had to do a Small Bust Adjustment and that removed the dart that was in the pattern. Also is there any way to save my top I"ve already made? I don't have enough fabric to remake it.
Fabric choice could be an issue, and maybe even the weight of the buttons. I would do test samples before attempting your project, and finally maybe putting darts into the top my save it.
Thank you so much for the tutorial! Question: you say to make the slit where the gaping is occurring. What if the gaping is occurring directly underneath the chin in the middle of the neckline? I am Michelle, by the way and Jerrold is my husband! We use his email as the You Tube contact. Thanks!
This is the alteration that nobody else addresses!!! Thank you sooooo much! Just what I have needed for my entire sewing years!

Finally a tutorial on the issue I always have. Thank you so much 👍

This is a great video. I have been wondering how to go about adjusting my existing dress patterns because of gaping necklines. Thanks so much!
My pleasure.

Thank you. Really appreciated.

You may have to adjust the bust dart and waist darts to solve the problem. It's hard to say where you need to reduce the access.
Hi Colleen. Thanks for the very informative video.
I have a question. If the neckline is gaping at the centre front how would I remove the excess? Or would it work to reduce it from say half way between the centre front and shoulder?
That may work, but there is a possibility that the neck shape will become bigger!

you explain it so well, thank you so much

With your adjustment do I need to adjust the arm hole ?
No! But you may have to adjust the shoulder length.
Thank you for that fix
No problem!
Thanks for this tutorial, Ms. Colleen. Does this technique work for gaping along the center back neckline?
Yes this could be one solution Lucy!

It’s my problem area too!
Hi Colleen, great video! do you re-draft the facing using the new bodice neckline now?
Yes you do. Thank you for commenting Mimi Mack.
If you want to remove an inch from a gaping neckline, would you divide it by four so you are taking it out of all the neck pieces?
Yes, if the area you are taking from will laid flat.
This seems like it works for the neckline but now the armhole seems altered. Do I need to alter the sleeve pattern and also how do I make a new neck facing?
Trace around the NEW neckline! No you don't need to alter the sleeve, but you need to adjust the back shoulder seam.

what kind of paper is that? It looks like it's somewhat tacky.
Ok for your method. Thanks kiss
Thanks for this I often get gaping. Now I can fix it properly

Thank you so much for the tutorial! Question: you say to make the slit where the gaping is occurring. What if the gaping is occurring directly underneath the chin in the middle of the neckline? I am Michelle, by the way and Jerrold is my husband! We use his email as the You Tube contact. Thanks!
Hi Michelle. Pinch out the fullness in the pattern which will create a dart type effect. It's called a dead dart. This will flatten out the pattern.
Can you please tell me how do I find in pattern that from where neck gaping can occur on neckline.
Hello Bhagwan. The neckline circumference of the sewing pattern is to big, which makes it stand away from the body.
Can this be done to the back as well?
Yes you can!
Awsome
Sew happy you found it useful Liz.
Is gaping not supposed to be reduced to the dart?
Not necessarily!
Where we use this trick?
On neck lines that do not lay flat against your body.
gracias,,me sacaste de un error que cometía.
How to fix the back of the neck?
Take the same amount from the shoulder, and scoop the neck shape to your required measurement.
What if the gaping is at the centre fold of the bodice. How do I fix that?
Hello Phoebe. You may have to adjust the shoulder and armhole.
i dont understand at all what u want to teach
I don't understand what you are asking! Arham Aamir.
