I am a 61 year old physical therapist. I discovered my Dupuytren's contractures in both of hands eight years ago. I started stretching which helped but as an adjunct sprayed magnesium oil and rubbed it into my hands daily. I also started supplementing oral magnesium 300mg daily. Between the magnesium and stretches my hand range of motion/function is normal. I do still have minimal residual fibrosis of the cords before I started treating it but this is very minor. It is significantly less than when I started treating my hands. This is not a cure but a control. I continue with magnesium and stretching daily and it works for me. I looked but cannot find the article stating magnesium interferes with the collagen crosslinking to form the cords. The article also noted a high degree of patients with Dupuytren's contracture had low levels of magnesium. I hope this information helps. edit - Also of North European heritage
@@Richard-nv3hhThat’s interesting that you said a fall may have triggered the contracture. I will look into this theory. I had an electric bike crash into me and cause a fracture on my arm. Maybe the amount of time keeping my arm immobile triggered it.
I want to join the gratitude group here. I was just diagnosed and am scheduled for PT but wanted to get started. I appreciate the clear way you explained and demonstrated the exercised. Thank you!
I have found that doing push-up is a great exercise, your body weight forces the palms flat on the floor and stretches the tendons in the palm of the hand and around the wrist. Plus it strengthens your arms at the same time, win-win
@Ivo same on knuckles because to tight but in bed I lay ony hand and stretch it sometimes for a hour to different degrees and directions, and hear the little tears sometimes
There is an argument that hard stretches can aggravate the growth of nodules. I'm not sure but I definitely recommend softening with oil and creams and using a splint at night to keep your hands stretched.
Please don't do push ups you will give yourself nerve pain down the road. Army vet DC 25 years 3rd operation both hands. None on feet yet. Don't do anything that will stretch your hand you will pay for it
Thank you, thank you thank you, appreciate it your exercises, and the comments below very very helpful, especially from the physical therapist who had his own personal experience with it
Hi folks I've suffered with aggressive Dupuytren's for years. I've had the middle finger operated on and so far so good. I do have it however in the small finger also in the left hand and in the little finger and index of the right hand. I use Magnesium oil with DMSO mix and I use a hard ball (tumble dryer ball) and massage vigorously every day for about 15 min. I wear a finger splint that I bought on Amazon. Before I put on the splint, at bedtime. I massage Sudocrem (like a baby nappy cream) into the hand. I have to say it keeps the finger softened and straight by the morning. I have found this to be more successful than stretches during the day. They were too painful. But much easier to them when the nodules are kept soft.
Magnesium oil, oral magnesium, and stretches have been the key for me. After eight years my hand/finger range of motion is normal. Working as a manual physical therapist I use my hands a lot. This saved me.
@@dorettadavies8298 I bought from Amazon. They're just material with a solid strip for the fingers tied with velcro. I think I searched for dupuytren's contraction splint.
I had surgery for this 6 years ago. The surgery was not bad, but the injection to numb my hand is something I will never endure again. Since then the contracture has returned, but I am adamant not to have the surgery again. (only because of the numbing procedure.) I will try these stretches and see if they help. Anything without that needle is worth a try for me. If I ever do find it necessary for surgery, I will be demanding some Fentanyl before anything takes place.
Both hands. I can’t lay my hands flat AT ALL. I can’t get my nails done anymore because it’s too embarrassing. I had one injection in my right hand. It was very expensive. My doctor after the cello up did no manipulation to the finger, looked at it and walked out. My hand hurts I can’t put ribs on either hand anymore because fingers in both hands are SO bad. I’ll admit I depressed about it.

Hello. Great video. But I have lump at bottom pinky finger joint. Can I just buy that brace with the screw and slowly tighten it over days to the straight position? Will the tendons elongate permanently over time? Or will the tendons end up pushing through lump of joint cartilage? Just some great questions for you and me and your FANS. My pinky is at straight & normal on bottom joint and that is were lump is. Then the next two joints are at 45 degrees. Got it from vibration of gas weed cutter on handle. It definitely could be straightened in the manner I suggested. But will the tendons stay stretched? Thanks sir.
I have this in both hands. On one hand I had ozone injections 3 times, and afterward there is zero pain and the palm almost looks normal. In the other hand I couldn't afford the injections and I cant hold hand flat, the cord is wrapped and pulled tight, is way more noticeable and it will hurt when stretched and doing certain things requiring strength in hand.

Thanks for usefull info. I'll do the exercise you eplain
Great! Best of luck!
I was supposed to get a ganglion cyst removed from my palm and in 2 weeks I was not able to bend my ring finger back. Now I’m being told I have Dupuytens contracture when I went in with a normal finger
Just a suggestion. The photo of the hands together is not over helpful.
I have marphan syndrome would it help me also ?
Is mild stinging pain in the area of the nodule normal when doing these exercises?
Yes. Low and slow with the stretch.
Can i do ice bath. Like for neuro genesis,? How?
I can't see where an ice bath would help with the mobility but could with pain.
Thank you so much Dr. I learned it's called Viking Disease. Very prevalent in Nordics. It helps if I make a fist and use my Knuckles to massage my Palms. I'm finding great relief being relentless. Stretching, massaging , vibrator and arthritis salve.
Thank you and yes!
My grandmother had it and she was the daughter of Polish immigrants. My father had it, and I have it too.
