- A cinematic short documentary following Knox Barber, a freelance double bassist in New York City. Riding the subway with an upright bass, practicing in a tiny apartment, and trying to make a living on poorly paying gigs. All in the busiest city in the world.
Film Director, Cinematographer, and Editor: Julian Archer
Starring: Knox Barber
That's a great video. I really felt everything you said. I also spend so much effort trucking around my bass in the bus or metro because I don't have a car and I practice in my kitchen because my apartment is so small, with also 3 doors to get out and a flight of stairs to deal with. And yet there is somehow something really satisfying about it not all being so easy. Everytime someone says a joke in the bus like "you should have played the flute" I can't help but think of how proud I feel to play my instrument. Playing just one beautiful note with the right bow stroke, the right intensity, the right vibrato, the right feeling makes it all worth it. Thank you for this video.
this is a well done short doc. The sound scapes kept me so interested

Thanks so much man!!
Just be lucky that you travel on NY subways and not the ones in Paris. I once had to go through lots of them when I lived there, and those entrance doors are comparble to gigantic pressurized cigar cutters...no foolin'! As you get older, you will strive to obtain an apt. with an elevator that leads your directly to your station wagon, while still playing as many gigs as you can. Nevertheless, I do admire your stamina and determination to get around NY. BTW, I have been using a Kolstein stroller for the past 50 years, but your wheel is also a great solution to getting around.
really well done
Thank you Raphael!!
I play bass bingo going to gigs
1. That's a big guitar/violin
2. Is there a dead body in there
3. I bet you wished you played the (insert small instrument here)
Get all three.....BINGO!!!!!
Nice Knox
