The fact Netherrealm is so afraid of any overtly sexual overtones, when their entire brand and identity is built around gratuitous and brutal violence, with the last two games letting you take part in a Chris Benoit simulator by having Johnny be able to perform cruel and drawn out fatalities on his wife and daughter is baffling Just my opinion, but I think if people were to be offended over the series, it would be at all the depictions of men curb stomping and skinning alive women and not, y'know, having characters dress immodest in an 18+ game

I mean, clearly the whole "scared of skin" thing only cuts one way: Skarlet, despite her entire schtick being absorbing blood through her skin, now needs to be covered nearly head to toe. But Shao Khan or Jax can rock next to nothing but pants, and that's apparently just peachy. Frankly, they should either own being lobotomites, and cover everyone up, or just be reasonable, and treat everyone equally.

they should've done what Avengers did and have skins based on the original designs and skins inspired by the original designs. One being exactly like the original while one having similarities, basically the og but in modern day or how it would look in that universe's timeline.

Shujinko has a ton of designs in Deception, since we follow his story in Konquest mode. Would be nice to see an alternate costume where he's younger, but it's never gonna happen.
Speaking of, shame that Shang got the old/young gimmick when just having young Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa from the movie or just going with the older look plus an altered design. We actually got to see Shujinko age so it could've been a cool gimick.

Shunjinko was always supposed to be a "good version" of Shang tsung. It worked in the 3d era because shang tsung already had a totally different design
I’m gonna be honest, if they didn’t want Li Mei in a skimpy look to fit her character, throw her into her old outfit/gi, it fits her better with how she’s characterized and if they wanted to censor it, they could just close the top part and it could still work.
Seriously, it's insane how even Nintendo is less prudish about the women having exposed skin in their games. Peach in a bikini in Mario Odyssey. The Gerudo pretty much walk around and fight in their bras in Breath of the Wild and just about every Fire Emblem female has been given some type of waifu skins in at least one game. Hell they even pushing it with some Splatoon designs.
Aaaaah, this makes me go back quite some months ago where the game had an entire trailer just for the Jon Van Danne Johnny skin. No additional dialogs or animations, just the skin. WB. Warner Brothers? More like Warning, Bullshit.
As an artist myself I share the same thoughts. If you're not going to remake the costumes identically and improve on the designs without censoring so hard don't use the costumes at all just do something new - I'm also still torn on Frost's 'Classic' costume not actually being 'Classic'.

Here's what I hate about Nitara's censored design: it actually sexualizes her more. How? Because despite wearing less clothes in Deadly Alliance, her colours were balanced properly, making us focus on her whole design. HOWEVER, her censored design in MK1 has so much plain red in the body suit that it subconsciously tells you these parts aren't important. What happens? Our eyes are guided to her chest because it's the most detailed part of the design. Bravo, NetherRealm! 👏

I was really furious to see a burnt face instead of a burning skull, it would've been so perfect. And I got so mad seeing li mei's primary re design especially because she already has one that is covered up in the 3d era , but nah they bring back the primary only to give a very bad redesign.
I think the disrespect might have to do with new people coming in to work on the game and having never played the older games and only seeing what they are at face value.

As a kid i never thought about the sexuality that comes with the skimpy outfits. I just assumed that they were fantasy characters and fantasy characters dress differently than regular humans. It absolutely got out of hand at one point, but i do think that the skimpy outfits made non earth realmers feel like they're from another place entirely.
I miss playing the game and having to unlock half the roster, and cool alternative costumes. These days I have no reason to keep playing passed the story mode and maybe the arcade endings. The very slight differences in costumes unlocked via regular play is insulting.
Invasions is definitely keeping me going but this customization sucks ass. Especially for the cameos, how come u have to get kano to lvl 8 or sum just to get a different color
I think the aversion to any kind "sexy costumes" in modern MK just looks even more silly when games like Street Fighter 6 and even Tekken is allowed to show off their characters in those kinds of outfits if if they are alternate costumes or whatever. It kinda makes MK fans look like chumps when they are told they can only have family friendly levels of sexiness that makes MK look more like Marvel movies, Meanwhile Cammy in SF6 is allowed to look like Cammy.
I'm surprised that they didn't use Li Mei's Deadly Alliance primary. I always thought it was the most memorable, despite not making it into Armageddon. Plus I always liked how the developers notes mention that it was a lot of the female devs favorite costume. But yeah...the new 3D era costumes do remind me of this meme in which a kid is asking his parent if they could buy something, for this example, that would be the classic 3D era costumes. But the parent says no, we have them at home, immediately cuts to the M1K versions as the ones at home. ......Memes aren't as good when you have to describe them.
However the problem with that is Even if they don't put the costumes in there's still gonna be many people complaining "Hey where's this costume" "I want this skin" It's damned if you do, damned if you don't
Honestly what baffles me is that Onaga has been denied being playable in the modern entries for literally 4 games in a row and I just find that really inexcusable….like alongside that and NRS's stubborn refusal to expand there creativity to update and show more love towards the other absent 3D era reps like the aforementioned dragon king as well as likes of the sons of Argus and others. Heck even getting costumes from this era is apparently asking too much from this supposedly talented and successful company because I assume this company is full of 90s era boomers who probably also have a shallow biased against the 3D era. Like for heavens sake even some of the canon cast get some guest character costumes or skins such as Johnny Cage's John Claude skin in M1K or Jax's Carl Weathers skin in MK X so like why can't we also get more of those 2000 era costumes as well. But I guess selling out to a bunch of guests is considered far easier simply because of easy cash clout but ignoring half your own series reps certainly shows more love towards other companies then your own brand NRS.…like there fun fan service and I personally enjoy some of them but hopefully you get what I mean. Like during these two decades NRS could have so easily made these characters work in the modern age by now. It just makes them come across as a Creatively bankrupt company when all they they ever focus on is recycling the same original trilogy cast and shoe horning in a bunch of guests for the most part. There for giving fans especially newer ones this impression that the 3D era is worthless garbage to be ashamed for liking. Such wasted potential for these characters.
I mean the creative era you desperately long for wasn’t performing well financially. And a lot of it wasn’t all that creative to begin with. I’m honestly beyond happy they dropped the whole “special forces” part of MK, it was always the lamest part. Closely followed by the mercenaries like the Black Dragons and Other goof balls (Kabal, Mavado and Erron Black are exceptions). I do wish they would bring back something like Shaolin Monks, easily one of the best couch co op games ever made. What characters would you want to comeback though? Personally for playable characters I want Mavado, Hotaru, Erron Black, Jade, Fujin, and The Great Kung Lao For Kameos I’d want Moloch/Drahmin, Meat, Zombie Liu Kang, Cassie, and Kotal Khan.
@@BingBingTheClown Honestly I feel like the reason a lot of the 3D reps were underdeveloped was because of tight deadlines the 2000 era games had for the developers of Midway and they didn’t have a lot of time to give the attention to detail that the popular original trilogy cast got. But in this day and age surely NRS should have the time and budget to really make those 3D reps shine and be better received by the fans similar to what Stryker & Bo-Rai-Cho got from NRS when it comes to being updated.
They'll either not even bother due to the amount they have to cover up or give her some random jumpsuit or something underneath ignoring the fact that you can just tweak certain areas and boom looks basically like it was back then with a few changes to make it work but if these costumes featured here are anything to go by then I hope you like black because there's gonna be allot of it
This downward spiral of nrs has really caused me to mald for like a decade now. I've grown up on post-classic mk and i absolutely adored its design, atmosphere, music and fairly weird sense of humor. The world building was very unique too. Of course, brushing off a story about cyborg ninjas, special ops units and japanese gods fighting a somewhat mongolian naked dude from another dimension is fairly easy to do but if you looked closer, you'd see a very uncommon world, I mean, a fantasy setting where the creation myth is not blatantly copied from the mythologies of our own world is a rarity in and of itself but they did it and they went an extra mile to actually write lore about all the realms, fractions and characters. Of course, that was until mk 9 came along and just took a fat shit on all of that. I still played all the nrs games, I even had fun doing so until mk 11 came by - that was the point where they completely switched their focus too multiplayer service bullshit and I really thought that I wouldn't buy the next game but I did, to play online with brothers. Little did I know, we made the mistake of buying the game in different stores on pc and nrs didn't include fucking crossplay between steam and egs. The content that was present in the game at the time was pure shit, I mean, the single player campaign started off alright but it degraded to the multiverse bullshit somewhere in the middle and, honestly, I don't know why would they do a reboot if they would go back to the same lobotomite story by the end. The invasions mode was just a waste of time, the optimization was horrible, the fucking servers were down half the time. Though, the thing that made me finally break was the Scorpion Deadly Alliance skin - the first time I saw it I thought I was tripping but I wasn't, they really couldn't even get THAT right. The costume itself is a weird mashup between his deadly alliance one and the one from the intro of Shaolin Monks with a silly fucking burned head, which scorpion literally never had, but on top of that, he, for some reason has resident-evil-weak-spot-orange coloured eyes. Why? WHY? Scorpion always had white eyes, shit, they even gave him white eyes for that goofy second costume. This was such a small thing but it finally broke me. If they don't give a shit about their games, then I can't either. I won't be bying the next game unless some miracles happen and they'll rebember how to do decent games, which is sad because this franchise was my favorite since I was 3 years old. But oh well, mk seems to be VERY profitable to WB, so it's very unlikely that any miracles will happen anytime soon
I just want NRS to respect the 3D ERA I played armageddon with my dad when I was 4 years old, we loved the lore, characters and SPECIALLY THE MUSIC, that's when i got obsessed with the franchise, played Deception, Shaolin Monks and later the arcade games only to go back and play deadly alliance 10 or so years later because I completely forgot about playing it. I remember when I played the Versus mode on Deception, I always wanted the stage to be "chamber of artifacts" since it had the best music in the entire franchise, while also being fitting for the stage, same thing happened with every mortal kombat game untill mkx, Mk9 still had fitting and epic music like "the armory" and "the subway" but also had some really bland orquestral music which isn't memorable, if they want orquestral music they should take hints from armageddon which had some really memorable orquestral music like "Final Battle" and the hell stage which started with a edgy rock n roll tune and suddenly started getting more orquestral, simply beautiful! Mortal Kombat could be funny while also being dark, and just look at Mk deception! The menu had creepy and atmospheric music, but then there was Ying Yang Island which pretty much started with a funny tropical music and after a certain point turned into a Creepy, Rock Song to symbolize the sudden change the island occurred! Taven is my favourite mortal kombat character, Armageddon's Konquest puts you in the hands of a powerful protagonist with the only determination to end his father's quest, while everyone was motivated to win armageddon and get god-like powers, taven just wanted everything to stop, and that's why he won armageddon! Mk9 just retconned this ending and never explained WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK HAPPENED TO THE MAIN PROTAGONIST OF THE GAME THAT ENDED EVERYTHING. I remember seeing Armageddon's Konquest ending and being like "can't wait for Taven to be more fleshed out and expanded on the next game", How stupid I was to think that! NRS will never treat 3D era the same way they treat the ARCADE era, So many characters could been expanded and reworked to make it more memorable, but they just focus on the safer route and even then, when they try to differentiate, it almost never works! They've ruined Classic Skins and somehow ruined everyone which originated from the 3D ERA. Sadly, I think there's no miracle happening anytime soon since MK1 is reportedly losing players because of the terrible launch decisions they did, we can only hope it doesn't get worse than that.
I think Li Mei’s DA primary was generally more popular to bring back and her samurai armor would’ve been a better contrast compared to her robe designs. For Nitara I would say unless they plan of giving EVERYONE a 3d era costume they should’ve just picked another character. Ashrah would’ve been perfect bc her design was already very modest and it could’ve given her a more normal face for a skin or even Kitana and Tanya might’ve worked with their leotards since we had mk2/3 costumes last game.
I can't believe Netherrealm Studios butchered the Mortal Kombat era from Deadly Alliance to Armageddon. They could have used Li Mei's Deception alternate outfit or make each character nostalgia outfit accurate as possible. Tekken 8 and Street Fighter 6 nailed it so Mortal Kombat 1 has no excuse. We want outfits that is accurate as the last games. You're right Snake, the outfits are bad pure and simple not because of lewdness and they ain't worth the money.
With MK being embarrased by it's skimpy history, their overblown, overly dramatic storylines, and the constant push for higher graphics. I think MK needs to start taking itself WAY less seirously. Original MK was basically everything edgy and extreme in the 90's mashed up. What if Image Comics was drawn by Boris Vallejo. It was honestly juvanile. And I think MK as a whole could stand to check its own ego and go back to when things were fun. Fatalities used to be silly, funny, rediculous. Now they're so overly, maticulously detailed that it isn't fun anymore. They're downright disturbing, gross and unpleasent. And it's such a harsh contrast when you go back to the story mode and it's all these grim growly men growling grimly about the fate of the world and the multiverse. Just like... calm down y'know? EMBRACE THE SLLYNESS.
Speak for yourself, everybody loves how gorey the fatalities are and I'm guessing you haven't seen all of them in the game as a bunch are on the silly side. MK has always had graphic stuff in it and it's a natural evolution for it to be as detailed as it is in this day and age. You don't like it then don't play M games. My point with the fatalities was that back in the day, when the graphics weren't as detailed, the fatalities were funny, silly, over the top and cartoony. But ever since MK9, with graphics only getting better and better, the fatalities aren't fun anymore. They're just gross. Hell developers working on MK11 got fucking PTSD from working on the game. I will always find it funny how when MKX was coming out NRS were all like we have to cover up the female fighters, its not practical, and then in the same game so many of the men are shirtless. Jax went to fight demons in hell in an open vest, and just about everyone agrees Erron's 2nd costume makes him look like a stripper lmao
Mortal 1 Kombat has a problem with the designs for their characters in general. If I watch a trailer for a new character reveal and it has to be directly said to me who it is instead of being instantly recognizable, you've fucked up in the design department. I shouldn't have to question when an old man kameo shows up whether its supposed to be Old Shang Tsung or Shujinko; it should be instantly recognizable in their design. Same goes for Tanya, my brain shouldn't have to go ''wait who's this?'' or ''is this a new character?'' I should instantly know but that doesn't happen if you change a characters entire design and get rid of their identifiable features and then need to have another character in a trailer tell me who this is supposed to be.

Aside from being innaccurate, the most annoying thing about that Nitara costume is that I feel like it could be a decent outfit if they just rebalanced the color composition a little bit.
MK9 was delisted on every platform it was on, that’s how ashamed and/or scared WB was of it. The high heels thing always felt like a dead giveaway of Netherrealm’s true intentions, the devs declaring this isn’t their choice.
Yeah I really feel like Ed boon and team really want MK to go all out but WB, always keep the eye on them with their own DEI team to make sure that they meet all the correct standards for modern game.

Really shouldn't shock anyone that NRS treats their designs with the same respect as the arcade era, they want everyone to think their games are on the same level. The hate they have for the 3d era has never made any sense to me, especially when Deception is one of the most loved games in the franchise.
I think it's weird that MK is trying to stray away so hard from the sexualized costumes like the entire franchise isn't known for being exclusively for adults. We're grown enough for swearing and gore, but not for boob windows? For being a supposed love letter to the 3D era, MK1 is certainly lacking with its homages.
If nothing else, the cyber ninjas are quite possibly the best they've ever looked, and Frost, well inaccurate, is at least cute. Just a shame none of the other outfits compare to pretty much all previous looks.
as someone that grew up on the arcade era im loving the classic skins, ive also realized that most complaints of skins are coming from people that grew up on deception.. and you are right.. considering that the deception skins were more detailed there is no reason to change them
I was thinking about this yesterday. How from an outside perspective and out of context it looks like MK fans are mad that women are wearing pants. But that's not it at all. It's Netherrealm taking an empty stance about clothing that no one had an issue with and selling fans nostalgia, but not really because it's not a faithful recreation and it's over priced as hell. That said, I'm a sucker because I will be buying Kenshi's classic skin, especially if it's his Deception costume.
We're talking about DLC/pay more for stuff, not base game "General Shao," it matters when they're charging the equivalent of $10 (or more adjusted for currency) for a skin

Imagine him coming back and they give him moves from the 3D era characters that “nobody likes”. Dairous Tombstones Drop, Kobras Fireball, Hsu Hao’s Klan Klap and Drahmin’s Uppercut. Then give a move that lets him copy a fighters moves and you’re good to go
Agree. Much I stop loving mortal combat after part 11 was done. I said: I'm done with the series. Much I love shujinko and the 3d era chachters I grew up with. Much I don't how they did havok. In my option.
100% agree on do the retro costumes right or don't do them at all. Seeing every woman draped in layers of cloth while there are multiple men who are shirtless and/or wearing skin tight spandex is glaringly obvious. Just handle both genders equally, not every character needs to be in a robe and not every character needs to be in their underwear.
The segment about fatalities not looking quite right also applies to entire characters. Triborg, we don't know if he's supposed to be completely mechanical or not due to having organs. Various fatalities like Kotal drinking a heart's blood become hilarious when done on a Xenomorph with acid blood.
I'll never understand this war on skin, especially in an era of settings customisation to the point where we have toggles in games to turn spiders off, but you're damn right with the accuracy comment. I'd rather have nothing than a half-assed attempt.

The extreme aversion to anything sexual is the most baffling thing about the way they butcher chracter design and aesthetic. Like, who are they protecting? One of Quan Chi's fatalities shows a person getting vertically quadrisected in _explicit_ detail. This is not a game for kids, you can have _optional_ skimpy outfits. Hell, I think it should be for every character. If I want a match between Mileena wearing nothing but bandages and Liu Kang with a giant buldge in a banana hammock for the pure fun of it, then that's my own decision.

They’re cheaper now at least, Sindel’s latest is actually sexy/revealing despite the continued 3D era changes, they should change the labels to “Modern Deception” or something like that, signify it being inspired by rather than recreated.
Another thing where the cost is ridiculous is the fatalities I like the Halloween and Christmas fatalities but I hate the thanksgiving fatality and the fact that it costs more than the characters is f@&king outrageous!
I'd rather they just not included any of the old skins if they're not gonna show actual love and appreciation for them. The same arguments for people being hxrny is just tiring. There's an actual reason why fans love those original costumes and they should at the very least get proper representation.
I want Raiden's MKDA outfit so bad! Midway teased us in Deception and Armageddon with it only to give us crappy Dark Raiden. We only got to use his MKDA design ONCE! THAT IS A FUCKING CRIME, considering that's arguably his best costume!
It still frustrates me that we didn’t get Deadly Alliance Li Mei. It’s her best design. Her only good design imo. And there would be no reason to alter that skin! Maybe put a generic undershirt to cover up cleavage if they care so much, but otherwise no change required(and if they do add it please give her the sandals and NOT HEELS). They went out of their way to pick a design that showed a lot of skin and drastically changed it, making it worse, and for what? And then sell that “klassic” for $10? They lost their minds
I agree that they are way overpriced as I think for the price of one costume in MK1 in MK11 you got 3 costumes and gear pieces. I hate that NRS has prudes in them at least for the women as men can show their rock hard abs and such. As a pansexual I'm not a fan of the excessive anti-sexual designs they've been taking from time to time, however I'm not a fan of the atrocious female designs of MK9 either which were purely sexually-motivated. There's a tasteful balance that can be achieved between celebrating sexuality but also maintaining a coherent design, I just don't trust this team to do it. Not to say all designs should be sexual, my favourite design in this game is Ashrah, just that their in-between approaches are generally whack so far because they're too focused on making up for imaginary mistakes.

The rant about the stupid change to the Inferno Scorpion costume reminds me of how NetherRealm doesn't give a fuck but when they do, it's over something stupid and doesn't matter. Right here (6:48) is the perfect example of that fact. How is ripping Jax's cybernetic arms like it's ripping off flesh or Kano's skull not having his cyber eye totally fine but Scorpion's flaming skull being removed like skin is something that needed to be fixed?
Skimpy costumes were phased out because of fighting game tournaments. Apparently families gather around to watch, . Instead of having one or two appropriate costumes participants can choose, game studios would rather scrub all sexy costumes.
What makes the scorpion classic even more baffling is the fact that it no longer has narrative significance, since the new scorpion is neither Hanzo Hasashi nor is he even fucking undead.

There 2 things that i really like about DA Nitara - the headband covering her eye and those majestic wings. God damn, she looks awesome. M1K Nitara's tiny wings don't draw any attention and the eye cover is missing so combined with this fugly bright red, instead of dark crimson, the only thing that draws the eyes in this costume is her exposed chest, which I'm pretty sure wasn't the intent xD And Li Mei's costume is kinda whatever. It's not faithful, but at least it doesn't look horrendous.
I just got the game around mid last month, seeing them charge the same price for an annoucer voice and certain skins is fucking crazy. All annoucer voices should be unlockable. they're barely even used. And maybe adding some of these skins as secret skins would help people want to play more instead of having to buy everything

Skimpy costumes and gory fighting were two traits of MK that I recall in my youth, and this was when I was two young to really sexualize anything. Now that I'm in my 20s, it's just odd to see NR really push back against sexual clothing. I recall Jade doing a sexual advertisement to nominate MK for an award, I think best female fighter? And I remember everyone loving Melina's mummy outfit in MK9 for the fact that it exists as an unlockable to fight with. Really felt like NR was embracing the sexual attire for MK back then, but I guess not anymore :/ shame that. It doesn't impact me that much, just a shame.
Honestly, my favourite designs come from MKX, if ONLY they had a better colour palette. I get that some of them were over designed, but damn I do love them.
I don’t necessarily mind the 3D changes regarding costumes…for Li Mei, sorta. Nitara is supposed to be a Sexy Vampire, I mean it fits you know? Sub-Zero’s is fine more or less, but I’d much preferred the simple mask of DA over the flaming head. I know it’s just a costume, and while the flaming head is made that way for technical reasons and looks pretty cool, it’s weird to see Kuai Liang’s head on fire. But you made a very good point on MMA fighters. Tremor I see as Retro-Like, rather than it being a recreation of any one design, though regarding Tremor and Scorpion, I love their MK4/MKA design more than anything. My main problem is converging Dairou with Havik, for the former that is some Wasted Plotential if I’ve ever seen it. Especially since Dairou could fit very well in a Post-Flooded Seido.

I’m gonna be honest, if they didn’t want Li Mei in a skimpy look to fit her character, throw her into her old outfit/gi, it fits her better with how she’s characterized and if they wanted to censor it, they could just close the top part and it could still work.
Seriously, it's insane how even Nintendo is less prudish about the women having exposed skin in their games. Peach in a bikini in Mario Odyssey. The Gerudo pretty much walk around and fight in their bras in Breath of the Wild and just about every Fire Emblem female has been given some type of waifu skins in at least one game. Hell they even pushing it with some Splatoon designs.
Capcom is really more open about having sexy women in Street Fighter than Netherealms is in Mortal Kombat. Wow.

As an artist myself I share the same thoughts. If you're not going to remake the costumes identically and improve on the designs without censoring so hard don't use the costumes at all just do something new - I'm also still torn on Frost's 'Classic' costume not actually being 'Classic'.

Here's what I hate about Nitara's censored design: it actually sexualizes her more.
How? Because despite wearing less clothes in Deadly Alliance, her colours were balanced properly, making us focus on her whole design.
HOWEVER, her censored design in MK1 has so much plain red in the body suit that it subconsciously tells you these parts aren't important. What happens? Our eyes are guided to her chest because it's the most detailed part of the design. Bravo, NetherRealm! 👏

Luckily due to MK1 uses skin this time, Modders have address these issue and fixed the problem of every MK players.

As a kid i never thought about the sexuality that comes with the skimpy outfits. I just assumed that they were fantasy characters and fantasy characters dress differently than regular humans.
It absolutely got out of hand at one point, but i do think that the skimpy outfits made non earth realmers feel like they're from another place entirely.
I miss playing the game and having to unlock half the roster, and cool alternative costumes. These days I have no reason to keep playing passed the story mode and maybe the arcade endings. The very slight differences in costumes unlocked via regular play is insulting.

I think the aversion to any kind "sexy costumes" in modern MK just looks even more silly when games like Street Fighter 6 and even Tekken is allowed to show off their characters in those kinds of outfits if if they are alternate costumes or whatever.
It kinda makes MK fans look like chumps when they are told they can only have family friendly levels of sexiness that makes MK look more like Marvel movies, Meanwhile Cammy in SF6 is allowed to look like Cammy.
I'm surprised that they didn't use Li Mei's Deadly Alliance primary. I always thought it was the most memorable, despite not making it into Armageddon. Plus I always liked how the developers notes mention that it was a lot of the female devs favorite costume.
But yeah...the new 3D era costumes do remind me of this meme in which a kid is asking his parent if they could buy something, for this example, that would be the classic 3D era costumes. But the parent says no, we have them at home, immediately cuts to the M1K versions as the ones at home.

Honestly what baffles me is that Onaga has been denied being playable in the modern entries for literally 4 games in a row and I just find that really inexcusable….like alongside that and NRS's stubborn refusal to expand there creativity to update and show more love towards the other absent 3D era reps like the aforementioned dragon king as well as likes of the sons of Argus and others. Heck even getting costumes from this era is apparently asking too much from this supposedly talented and successful company because I assume this company is full of 90s era boomers who probably also have a shallow biased against the 3D era. Like for heavens sake even some of the canon cast get some guest character costumes or skins such as Johnny Cage's John Claude skin in M1K or Jax's Carl Weathers skin in MK X so like why can't we also get more of those 2000 era costumes as well. But I guess selling out to a bunch of guests is considered far easier simply because of easy cash clout but ignoring half your own series reps certainly shows more love towards other companies then your own brand NRS.…like there fun fan service and I personally enjoy some of them but hopefully you get what I mean. Like during these two decades NRS could have so easily made these characters work in the modern age by now. It just makes them come across as a Creatively bankrupt company when all they they ever focus on is recycling the same original trilogy cast and shoe horning in a bunch of guests for the most part. There for giving fans especially newer ones this impression that the 3D era is worthless garbage to be ashamed for liking. Such wasted potential for these characters.

I mean the creative era you desperately long for wasn’t performing well financially. And a lot of it wasn’t all that creative to begin with. I’m honestly beyond happy they dropped the whole “special forces” part of MK, it was always the lamest part. Closely followed by the mercenaries like the Black Dragons and Other goof balls (Kabal, Mavado and Erron Black are exceptions). I do wish they would bring back something like Shaolin Monks, easily one of the best couch co op games ever made.
What characters would you want to comeback though? Personally for playable characters I want Mavado, Hotaru, Erron Black, Jade, Fujin, and The Great Kung Lao

@@BingBingTheClown Honestly I feel like the reason a lot of the 3D reps were underdeveloped was because of tight deadlines the 2000 era games had for the developers of Midway and they didn’t have a lot of time to give the attention to detail that the popular original trilogy cast got. But in this day and age surely NRS should have the time and budget to really make those 3D reps shine and be better received by the fans similar to what Stryker & Bo-Rai-Cho got from NRS when it comes to being updated.

Preach my man preach. Nothing bothered me more than the Dragon Medallion on Sub-Zero's costume not being the same as the original.
This downward spiral of nrs has really caused me to mald for like a decade now. I've grown up on post-classic mk and i absolutely adored its design, atmosphere, music and fairly weird sense of humor. The world building was very unique too. Of course, brushing off a story about cyborg ninjas, special ops units and japanese gods fighting a somewhat mongolian naked dude from another dimension is fairly easy to do but if you looked closer, you'd see a very uncommon world, I mean, a fantasy setting where the creation myth is not blatantly copied from the mythologies of our own world is a rarity in and of itself but they did it and they went an extra mile to actually write lore about all the realms, fractions and characters. Of course, that was until mk 9 came along and just took a fat shit on all of that. I still played all the nrs games, I even had fun doing so until mk 11 came by - that was the point where they completely switched their focus too multiplayer service bullshit and I really thought that I wouldn't buy the next game but I did, to play online with brothers. Little did I know, we made the mistake of buying the game in different stores on pc and nrs didn't include fucking crossplay between steam and egs. The content that was present in the game at the time was pure shit, I mean, the single player campaign started off alright but it degraded to the multiverse bullshit somewhere in the middle and, honestly, I don't know why would they do a reboot if they would go back to the same lobotomite story by the end. The invasions mode was just a waste of time, the optimization was horrible, the fucking servers were down half the time. Though, the thing that made me finally break was the Scorpion Deadly Alliance skin - the first time I saw it I thought I was tripping but I wasn't, they really couldn't even get THAT right. The costume itself is a weird mashup between his deadly alliance one and the one from the intro of Shaolin Monks with a silly fucking burned head, which scorpion literally never had, but on top of that, he, for some reason has resident-evil-weak-spot-orange coloured eyes. Why? WHY? Scorpion always had white eyes, shit, they even gave him white eyes for that goofy second costume. This was such a small thing but it finally broke me. If they don't give a shit about their games, then I can't either. I won't be bying the next game unless some miracles happen and they'll rebember how to do decent games, which is sad because this franchise was my favorite since I was 3 years old. But oh well, mk seems to be VERY profitable to WB, so it's very unlikely that any miracles will happen anytime soon

I played armageddon with my dad when I was 4 years old, we loved the lore, characters and SPECIALLY THE MUSIC, that's when i got obsessed with the franchise, played Deception, Shaolin Monks and later the arcade games only to go back and play deadly alliance 10 or so years later because I completely forgot about playing it.
I remember when I played the Versus mode on Deception, I always wanted the stage to be "chamber of artifacts" since it had the best music in the entire franchise, while also being fitting for the stage, same thing happened with every mortal kombat game untill mkx, Mk9 still had fitting and epic music like "the armory" and "the subway" but also had some really bland orquestral music which isn't memorable, if they want orquestral music they should take hints from armageddon which had some really memorable orquestral music like "Final Battle" and the hell stage which started with a edgy rock n roll tune and suddenly started getting more orquestral, simply beautiful!
Mortal Kombat could be funny while also being dark, and just look at Mk deception! The menu had creepy and atmospheric music, but then there was Ying Yang Island which pretty much started with a funny tropical music and after a certain point turned into a Creepy, Rock Song to symbolize the sudden change the island occurred!
Taven is my favourite mortal kombat character, Armageddon's Konquest puts you in the hands of a powerful protagonist with the only determination to end his father's quest, while everyone was motivated to win armageddon and get god-like powers, taven just wanted everything to stop, and that's why he won armageddon!
Mk9 just retconned this ending and never explained WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK HAPPENED TO THE MAIN PROTAGONIST OF THE GAME THAT ENDED EVERYTHING.
I remember seeing Armageddon's Konquest ending and being like "can't wait for Taven to be more fleshed out and expanded on the next game", How stupid I was to think that! NRS will never treat 3D era the same way they treat the ARCADE era, So many characters could been expanded and reworked to make it more memorable, but they just focus on the safer route and even then, when they try to differentiate, it almost never works! They've ruined Classic Skins and somehow ruined everyone which originated from the 3D ERA.
Sadly, I think there's no miracle happening anytime soon since MK1 is reportedly losing players because of the terrible launch decisions they did, we can only hope it doesn't get worse than that.
I think Li Mei’s DA primary was generally more popular to bring back and her samurai armor would’ve been a better contrast compared to her robe designs. For Nitara I would say unless they plan of giving EVERYONE a 3d era costume they should’ve just picked another character. Ashrah would’ve been perfect bc her design was already very modest and it could’ve given her a more normal face for a skin or even Kitana and Tanya might’ve worked with their leotards since we had mk2/3 costumes last game.
I can't believe Netherrealm Studios butchered the Mortal Kombat era from Deadly Alliance to Armageddon. They could have used Li Mei's Deception alternate outfit or make each character nostalgia outfit accurate as possible. Tekken 8 and Street Fighter 6 nailed it so Mortal Kombat 1 has no excuse. We want outfits that is accurate as the last games. You're right Snake, the outfits are bad pure and simple not because of lewdness and they ain't worth the money.

With MK being embarrased by it's skimpy history, their overblown, overly dramatic storylines, and the constant push for higher graphics. I think MK needs to start taking itself WAY less seirously.
Original MK was basically everything edgy and extreme in the 90's mashed up. What if Image Comics was drawn by Boris Vallejo. It was honestly juvanile. And I think MK as a whole could stand to check its own ego and go back to when things were fun.
Fatalities used to be silly, funny, rediculous. Now they're so overly, maticulously detailed that it isn't fun anymore. They're downright disturbing, gross and unpleasent. And it's such a harsh contrast when you go back to the story mode and it's all these grim growly men growling grimly about the fate of the world and the multiverse.

MK has always had graphic stuff in it and it's a natural evolution for it to be as detailed as it is in this day and age. You don't like it then don't play M games. The characters only talk about the fate of the world and/or multiverse like twice in the entire story mode, what are talking about growly growling men? Lmao what is this comment.
My point with the fatalities was that back in the day, when the graphics weren't as detailed, the fatalities were funny, silly, over the top and cartoony. But ever since MK9, with graphics only getting better and better, the fatalities aren't fun anymore. They're just gross. Hell developers working on MK11 got fucking PTSD from working on the game. Mortal 1 Kombat has a problem with the designs for their characters in general.
If I watch a trailer for a new character reveal and it has to be directly said to me who it is instead of being instantly recognizable, you've fucked up in the design department.
I shouldn't have to question when an old man kameo shows up whether its supposed to be Old Shang Tsung or Shujinko; it should be instantly recognizable in their design.
Same goes for Tanya, my brain shouldn't have to go ''wait who's this?'' or ''is this a new character?'' I should instantly know but that doesn't happen if you change a characters entire design and get rid of their identifiable features and then need to have another character in a trailer tell me who this is supposed to be.

Aside from being innaccurate, the most annoying thing about that Nitara costume is that I feel like it could be a decent outfit if they just rebalanced the color composition a little bit.
MK9 was delisted on every platform it was on, that’s how ashamed and/or scared WB was of it. The high heels thing always felt like a dead giveaway of Netherrealm’s true intentions, the devs declaring this isn’t their choice.
Yeah I really feel like Ed boon and team really want MK to go all out but WB, always keep the eye on them with their own DEI team to make sure that they meet all the correct standards for modern game.

Really shouldn't shock anyone that NRS treats their designs with the same respect as the arcade era, they want everyone to think their games are on the same level. The hate they have for the 3d era has never made any sense to me, especially when Deception is one of the most loved games in the franchise.
I think it's weird that MK is trying to stray away so hard from the sexualized costumes like the entire franchise isn't known for being exclusively for adults. We're grown enough for swearing and gore, but not for boob windows?
For being a supposed love letter to the 3D era, MK1 is certainly lacking with its homages.

I was thinking about this yesterday. How from an outside perspective and out of context it looks like MK fans are mad that women are wearing pants. But that's not it at all. It's Netherrealm taking an empty stance about clothing that no one had an issue with and selling fans nostalgia, but not really because it's not a faithful recreation and it's over priced as hell. That said, I'm a sucker because I will be buying Kenshi's classic skin, especially if it's his Deception costume.

Speaking of Shujinko, man I wish he was a playable character instead of a Kameo. I would gladly sacrifice Omni-man, Peacemaker and Homelander for him. Imagine him coming back and they give him moves from the 3D era characters that “nobody likes”. Dairous Tombstones Drop, Kobras Fireball, Hsu Hao’s Klan Klap and Drahmin’s Uppercut. Then give a move that lets him copy a fighters moves and you’re good to go

100% agree on do the retro costumes right or don't do them at all. Seeing every woman draped in layers of cloth while there are multiple men who are shirtless and/or wearing skin tight spandex is glaringly obvious. Just handle both genders equally, not every character needs to be in a robe and not every character needs to be in their underwear.
The segment about fatalities not looking quite right also applies to entire characters. Triborg, we don't know if he's supposed to be completely mechanical or not due to having organs. Various fatalities like Kotal drinking a heart's blood become hilarious when done on a Xenomorph with acid blood.
I'll never understand this war on skin, especially in an era of settings customisation to the point where we have toggles in games to turn spiders off, but you're damn right with the accuracy comment. I'd rather have nothing than a half-assed attempt.

The extreme aversion to anything sexual is the most baffling thing about the way they butcher chracter design and aesthetic. Like, who are they protecting? One of Quan Chi's fatalities shows a person getting vertically quadrisected in _explicit_ detail. This is not a game for kids, you can have _optional_ skimpy outfits. Hell, I think it should be for every character. If I want a match between Mileena wearing nothing but bandages and Liu Kang with a giant buldge in a banana hammock for the pure fun of it, then that's my own decision.
Shujinko looks more like Old Man Shang in arcade era inspired costume than Shujinko himself.

If you chop the DA Scorpion skin his head model will change to a basic and generic head model (might be kung lao's?) Is easy to see if you one of Ashuras fatalities, they don't even keep the change they made consistent.
They’re cheaper now at least, Sindel’s latest is actually sexy/revealing despite the continued 3D era changes, they should change the labels to “Modern Deception” or something like that, signify it being inspired by rather than recreated.

They went out of their way to pick a design that showed a lot of skin and drastically changed it, making it worse, and for what? And then sell that “klassic” for $10? They lost their minds

I hate that NRS has prudes in them at least for the women as men can show their rock hard abs and such. As a pansexual I'm not a fan of the excessive anti-sexual designs they've been taking from time to time, however I'm not a fan of the atrocious female designs of MK9 either which were purely sexually-motivated. There's a tasteful balance that can be achieved between celebrating sexuality but also maintaining a coherent design, I just don't trust this team to do it.
Not to say all designs should be sexual, my favourite design in this game is Ashrah, just that their in-between approaches are generally whack so far because they're too focused on making up for imaginary mistakes.

How is ripping Jax's cybernetic arms like it's ripping off flesh or Kano's skull not having his cyber eye totally fine but Scorpion's flaming skull being removed like skin is something that needed to be fixed?
Skimpy costumes were phased out because of fighting game tournaments. Apparently families gather around to watch, . Instead of having one or two appropriate costumes participants can choose, game studios would rather scrub all sexy costumes.

There 2 things that i really like about DA Nitara - the headband covering her eye and those majestic wings. God damn, she looks awesome.
M1K Nitara's tiny wings don't draw any attention and the eye cover is missing so combined with this fugly bright red, instead of dark crimson, the only thing that draws the eyes in this costume is her exposed chest, which I'm pretty sure wasn't the intent xD
And Li Mei's costume is kinda whatever. It's not faithful, but at least it doesn't look horrendous.

I just got the game around mid last month, seeing them charge the same price for an annoucer voice and certain skins is fucking crazy. All annoucer voices should be unlockable. they're barely even used. And maybe adding some of these skins as secret skins would help people want to play more instead of having to buy everything

Skimpy costumes and gory fighting were two traits of MK that I recall in my youth, and this was when I was two young to really sexualize anything.
Now that I'm in my 20s, it's just odd to see NR really push back against sexual clothing. I recall Jade doing a sexual advertisement to nominate MK for an award, I think best female fighter? And I remember everyone loving Melina's mummy outfit in MK9 for the fact that it exists as an unlockable to fight with. Really felt like NR was embracing the sexual attire for MK back then, but I guess not anymore :/ shame that. It doesn't impact me that much, just a shame.

I don’t necessarily mind the 3D changes regarding costumes…for Li Mei, sorta. Nitara is supposed to be a Sexy Vampire, I mean it fits you know? Sub-Zero’s is fine more or less, but I’d much preferred the simple mask of DA over the flaming head.
I know it’s just a costume, and while the flaming head is made that way for technical reasons and looks pretty cool, it’s weird to see Kuai Liang’s head on fire.
But you made a very good point on MMA fighters. Tremor I see as Retro-Like, rather than it being a recreation of any one design, though regarding Tremor and Scorpion, I love their MK4/MKA design more than anything.
My main problem is converging Dairou with Havik, for the former that is some Wasted Plotential if I’ve ever seen it. Especially since Dairou could fit very well in a Post-Flooded Seido.
