Glad you reviewed a GMT Game. Not enough GMT reviews on this channel.

Maybe they don't release enough games for regular players and focus too much on heavy wargames?

Tom is confusing Fort Sumter with Fort Sumner in New Mexico.

I really appreciate your review on this particular game. I also watched your review of 13 Days, which was a deciding factor on the purchase of 13 Days.

For historical board games I like to get some insight into the difficult choices that politicians or commanders had to make at the time. Here, I got none of that. Glad it wasn’t my copy. What a dud. Better to read a book, or in this case, even a Wikipedia article.

Even the novel "Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter" provided more good history...lol. (Seriously...it is actually a fairly good historical tome. It just throws some "vampire stuff" into the narrative, to fill some holes.) :-)

Good review. I love Mark's games but this sure feels to me like one of his weaker designs.

I don't agree with Tom on this one.
Sure, the graphic design is bland. But the game isn't bland. It's a light but tight area control game.
The sequencing of your cards during the final crisis and the adding/removing/shifting of cubes during the game DOES have a strategic/brinkmanship element... you just have to play several games to get the nuances.
If this game suffers from anything, it's that it falls into an odd niche: historical wargamers love long, epic games while light eurogamers often prefer a fun, whimsical theme... which means this game may not satisfy either group.
However, this is the first GMT game I've convinced my girlfriend to play, and we've played it 10+ times, often at her request.
If you have 20 minutes to burn between game sessions, or if you're warming up to or winding down from an epic 1v1 showdown, this is a very good game to play.

I am a huge fan of Civil War games and the history of that period (despite being English). But I watched the play through and in all honesty it looked absolutely dire.

I got a feeling the Mark Herman fanatics (I’m looking at you, Judd) will jump on you for this one. I’m really surprised this is one of his. Usually his stuff makes sense and feels like you’re playing history. For the People is a great Civil War game by Mark - go there instead.

I think it was one of those, so focused on whether you could that no one asked if you should situations. The game was designed to be a fast family game, and in the end it just ran out of interesting. I own it, played it 3-4 times, and haven't honestly never desired to play it again, and I love American history, my favorite GMT game is Liberty or Death.
