Who ever gave her thumbs down is absolutely nuts. She is the best meal prepper, homesteader I have ever found on YT. Plus she cooks like my Nana used to. Because of this young lady here, I've been able to meal prep and start my own gardening and canning my fruits of love. That's what I call my fruits and veggies that I grow myself. Thank you so much, you are an inspiration to me. Much love to you and your four legged babies. ❤😋😀

    Three suggestions:
    - for folks planning to buy Delta lids, they are available in packs of multiple colors. If you don’t like to label your buckets, you can remember the oats are in the bucket with the red lid, etc.
    - consider using one-piece lids for mason jars you use for dry storage. They’re so much easier to use than the two-piece lids.
    - consider covering the windows in your food storage room. Light will damage food especially if it’s stored in clear jars.

We have 4 dogs and no children so seeing that you are in relatively the same boat it makes me want to go forward with this project even more! Your storage room with all of that space and shelves are awesome. You probably know this but I just thought I would tell you anyway if you are going to put canning in there with glass jars you need to block the sunlight out of those big beautiful windows because that will damage your canned goods.

    • @AcreHomestead

  • @karenlawson4888
    @karenlawson4888 3 роки тому +24

Three advantages to sun-blocking window treatments in your pantry room: Cooler rooms extend the life of both dry goods and home-canned foods. Ditto for UV exposure as it’s not just heat that causes degradation. Also privacy and safety. You may love and voluntarily feed your neighbors in emergency situations, but there are always those who will take forcibly and feel justified.
Just found your channel and am enjoying catching up with your videos! I am going to make your baked oatmeal breakfast dish! But onto today’s topic…
My pantry room serves a variety of functions, so I protect my home canned foods with black construction paper sleeves around the jars or to top the new open-top jar boxes. I have also hung nice light-blocking curtains across the front of the double closet converted to shelf storage and in front of the back wall of shelving units. What surprised me most with these curtain walls was how much it cut down on dust on my jars! Plus, when I do have the window blinds open, my foods are hidden from outside view.

Noticed you used 2 buckets to fill with the white flower. Here's a hack to make sure you use the oldest flour up first: Fill the empty bucket about 2/3 full. Then dump the older flour in on top. Then fill the other now empty second bucket. Obviously use the first bucket first. 😘

If you are going to store long-term food storage in a room with big windows and want to use it as a pantry, you need to IMMEDIATELY hang up blackout curtains. A pantry with canning jars should be dark 99.5% of the time. the other 0.05% when you turn on the light to retrieve something. The sun coming through those windows will "cook" or warm your canning jars and food storage daily. PLEASE put up blackout curtains. Another tip, purchase mylar bags for your buckets. Good luck!

The upright is going to make me very very happy because sitting in a wheelchair I can't get down into the deep freeze so I need my caregiver to do it and it doesn't work so well that way. I know I'm very late to this video, but when I pour things into my 5 gallon buckets, I place a folded up, super cheap shower curtain under them. Just try to fold it up into a square. Saves too much mess on my floors, and I can just fold up the curtain and pour any spillage back into the bucket.

Sometimes those bulk foods already come with pest in them inside the grain, so storing with O2 absorbers in mylar bags could starve those critters of oxygen and prevent their proliferation.

This was a great video. You have so much energy! I noticed that you store your jars without the lids on. I hate taking the time to clean spider webs and gross stuff out of my Jars when it comes time for canning, so I turn a clean, used canning lid upside-down (so the gummie stuff doesn't stick to the jar) and put the ring on to store clean empty Jars. Saves a lot of time during canning season. 😊

I think you're amazing, the way you do all these things in bulk and cook up enormous numbers of meals in catering sizes in just a few hours sometimes! I am so pleased I subscribed, because this is one of the most interesting channels I've seen in a while. Good luck to you! I hope your husband understands how lucky he is that you have got this when it comes to feeding your family and that you take such a clever and resourceful approach to it all.

Rings take up a lot of space. Get a coat hanger and unwind the twists at the top and roughly form into a circle. Thread your rings on the circle, hang from the wire racks. Easy to access, but out of the way.

Last year before the pandemic hit I randomly talked to a coworker who told me that she might survive 2-3 days with the food in her house. I was shocked even though it’s just my husband and me plus my dad whom I cook for 2x per week for 4 days. I inherited food storage from my mum. We did not go shopping for the first 1,5 months of lockdown which was really nice. Then we craved fresh produce. 😉

I have used Gamma lids for close to 20 years now. Best thing invented to reuse food buckets from food service operations. I have also found three sizes of square containers with the lids at a pet shop some 17 years ago. They are food grade and make storage far more efficient.
Interesting, bulk larder just for two individuals.
We make homemade noodles and pack them in metal tins but I use silica gel desiccant packs to keep the moisture level very low to avoid spoilage. Having worked in hotel and resturant industry I have developed the habit of labeling on everything purchase date as well as expirey dates on everything and once a month rotating stock. Wonder if gamma makes a wider assortment of colors, it would be great to color code various items.

That’s awesome! My hubby thought I was crazy for doing buckets a few years ago, but i love it. I used square based food safe buckets (fit better in my space) from ULine and green painter’s tape with permanent marker to label (cheaper and you can write in bigger font). I also include on painter’s tape my personalized instructions for things like rice:water ratio on all the different kinds of rice i buy. You have amazing energy, I think i lost my energy after i had kids.

If you put the lid on the bickets after filling and tap tap the buckets on the floor, it will settle the contents and can fit quite a bit more in, just keep tapping it in between filling up etc.

It was nice to see your official package inspectors helping out. My dogs, especially my Border Collie, love to thoroughly sniff every new package I bring into my house. I'm just about to get started with bulk buying, storing and canning. I recently had to change jobs and now work remotely from home. I was able to trade in a forty mile round tip commute for a zero mile round trip commute. :-) With the forty mile commute I was in the habit of stopping at a store between work and home fairly frequently and just buying a few things at a time. With my new routine, bulk buying will be a better approach. And if it saves money in the long run it's a win/win. That's especially true since the nearest grocery store to me is a small town grocery store with a smaller selection and larger prices.

Find or build some wood crates that hold either 12 pints or 12 quarts. Those can make accessing either empty or full jars simple as the boxes do deteriorate and die. You can label the front of the crates so you know what is in the flat crate. It saves your back and your arms. Also, KEEP YOUR ORIGINAL LABELS. I clear tape them to the outside of the bucket. This is in case of food recalls, and also DATE YOUR BUCKETS and containers, so you use the older products first. You need to get a Food Saver and the jar sealer to vacuum seal your jars of items you're keeping long term, like those raisins. It keeps them fresher and things out of them.

I was saying, “don’t do it “ just before you poured the new white flour over the old flour. May I suggest that you work with two buckets? The old flour at the bottom won’t be rotated and could go rancid, taking the new flour with it. Or, store the flour in the unopened bag until you empty (and wash out) the bucket. (Suggestion offered with affection and help, not judgment or criticism). BTW, I am loving your channel. Your energy is contagious! Loving it all 💕

I would advise to put some blinds on your windows as light can shorten the shelf life of canned goods. We turned our back bedroom into a walk in pantry and we put reflective coating on the windows, cutting the direct light by half.
You are doing a wonderful job and yes it takes time to put together long term food storage.
    Cheers from Australia
