They did a little bit of that with the Super Tuesday/Friday games last season, all of the pre-2000 games were playoffs or Superbowls though. They obviously assume nobody is interested in regular season games from 30-40 years ago...
There are so many. All the great Cowboys-Redskins, Raiders-Chiefs games they could play to show what made them such rivals. And that Alcoa Fantastic Finishes spot at the 2 minute warning. LOL - Chester Marcol takes the blocked field goal in for the winning score for Green Bay against the Bears. Classic.
...."sells"..."sells"..."Sells" said products!!! I'm curious to know how Mastercard, Dodge and Atari's "sales" numbers were impacted in using said personalities to pitch their product.
Great game by two of the best QBs in the game at that point in history. Chargers under Coryell always had the offensive firepower. D had good players in spots, but the unit always let them down in the playoffs. And agreed wholeheartedly with earlier posts about it being a drag the NFLN airing way too much programming no one cares about and not enough true classics like this one.
This was a strike year…The chargers went on the road and beat the Steelers 31-28 with a throw back screen to Winslow! then they went and lost in Miami. This was the year Miami went to Super Bowl against the Redskins and Riggins ran that 4th and 1 off left tackle for a TD to win the game. One more point…Chargers struggles on Defense as we all know but they had the chance to draft Mike Singletary at the bottom of the 81 draft - instead the passed and drafted James Brooks. The rest is history for sure. The NFL is designed to tear down the top teams with the way the draft is organized. Its very hard to stay on top…
One of the great shootouts I’ve ever seen! I remember this game like it was played an hour ago. That Chandler catch in the left corner of the end zone was one of the plays that remains with me to this day.
Contrary to what Enberg said at the end, the 49ers could have made the playoffs with a 4-5 record. But they lost a heartbreaker to the lowly Rams on the last game of the season to finish 3-6.
I have always been a Packer backer, however back when we were LUCKY to finish with 6+ wins, I also was a SD Chargers fan. Dan Fouts, Jihn Jefferson, Charlie Joiner, etc. These guys were AWESOME. AND like the Bears were to the Packers the Raiders were the team that always annoyed the Chargers.
This one was a good'n. Thanks for uploading. I was 14 years old and watched football religiously. I may have watched this game IDK. It may have not aired here in Dallas. The Cowboys may have been playing at the same time, or the Oilers. Those are the games we got all of the time
I laugh when people say that Brady had so much less help than Montana or others. SF starting RBs in this game were Jeff Moore (who? 12th rd pick?) and Bill Ring (Dick makes the analogy to Rocky Bleier; yeah. a poor poor man's version). The great QB who did the most with the worst cast was Elway in the 80s. He didn't play with any HOFs until Shannon Sharpe. Not one and made 3 SBs Brady had all those great defenses (Top 3-4 in NFL in those early SB years), very underrated OL and backs, plus HOF K and HC. Giving full credit to Brady for his first 3 is like giving full credit to Kobe for his first 3 rings and forgetting Shaq was there. BTW Richard, love your games. Wish the league would get head out and leave these up. No one wants to watch stupid Top 10 or Combine all day on NFLN. I love NFL Films but these uploads give real perspective on how the game was played and coached more than the Films HLs. And we need some perspective and history lessons bc frankly most people forget. They think 51 was the best ever and Brady is greatest w/o argument
He sounded like he didn't take for granted the good life he knew he had. Just did a great job inviting the audience along for the ride. He welcomed us to a lot of the best there was to see.
@@graciemaemarie11jones16 Not true. Have proof of that? No..you don't. Just because you can post this slime without consequence doesn't mean you should. Grow up. Enberg was anything BUT gay. In fact, I know he tried to date Chrissy Evert. In between his TWO marriages (1973 to 1983). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dick_Enberg
Endberg and Olsen were a great team for NBC NFL Football. May they RIP. The Air Coryell Chargers were my favorite NFL team. They were sooo fun to watch. I remember this game. Chandler owned the 49ers secondary. They could not cover him.
Wes Chandler ate the 49ers alive that day. Witness the TD catch at 1:37:12, one of the greatest I've seen. Had the Chargers and Air Coryell not declined in following years, he well may have made it to the HOF.
I'm a Wes Chandler fan as well, and few people remember he finished up his career as a 49er. After his age 30 season, Chandler's production tailed off, the wear and tear of playing in the NFL can do that to a player. He was also a dangerous kick returner on occasion, as we saw in the 1981 playoff at Miami.
Both Hill and Chandler went to the 49ers at the twilight of their careers. Chandler only played four games and retired due to tendonitis in his knee. Hill was briefly signed but was cut just before the regular season started. Both of them were pretty much washed up by that point.
A lot of people forget that Montana played several years before Jerry Rice came along. Still 3 years away from drafting Rice and creating an all time QB/WR combo.
The one thing I remember about this game was the unbelievable catch by WES CHANDLER made in the endzone. Watch the game you will see. Can you imagine if these 2 teams met in the Superbowl. Instead of that crappy ass Cincinnati team that got blown out by montana and company in Superbowl 16 I think. It was played in Detroit. That game called the freeze bowl, at game time it was 31 below, that included the windchill. Charger owner asked NFL Commisioner PETE ROZELLE to have the game postponed or played in a dome stadium. Obviously it was not. The other thing I heard. Whenever the chargers were on offense, the ground crew would open these huge doors that led to the field. the doors were used to allow people or vehicles to enter the stadium grounds. This caused the wind to be blown in the stadium on the field and Fouts's passes were off target. When Cincinnati was on offense they closed the doors. So Ken Anderson passes were on target. Years later Kellen Winslow admitted, my mind was not on the game but on surviving in this 31 below weather.
Definitely the warning days of the Chargers as contenders. After 1982, the Chargers seemed to settle into the role of competitive spoilers (beating the 11-0 1984 Dolphins for example) and being exciting. The 1983-'86 Chargers could beat anybody, but didn't have enough to string together wins anymore.
It was a shit hole but it was OUR shit hole. Funny thing is, the weather in football season, except for the occasional rain storm, was MUCH better in the fall than the summer. Less wind and fog.
The Week 6 matchup, during the abbreviated 1982 NFL season, between the S.D. Chargers and the defending Superbowl champion S.F. 49ers, would be the first and last time, future Hall-Of-Famers, quarterbacks Dan Fouts and Joe Montana would compete against each other in a NFL game. Fouts and Montana turned in superb performances during this memorable contest. Fouts' effort was turnover free. Montana threw two intercecptions in the second half in which the latter was made by linebacker Woodrow Lowe guaranteed the Chargers a 41-37 victory. Fouts had the most productive performance. After the game, Fouts and Montana remained on the field to be interviewed by NBC Sports reporter Pete Axthelm.
I remember this 82 short season, and how the 49ers didn't make the playoffs. At the time, I thought after their Cinderella year in 81 that the 49ers would go back to being a loser. I was wrong of course!
This was a Saturday afternoon game, and talk about a classic! The two best quarterbacks in the NFL lighting up the score board! In back to back weeks the Chargers took on San Francisco, and the week later they hosted the Cincinnati Bengals. In 8 quarters the Chargers scored 95 points against the Super Bowl 16 representatives! Dan Fouts and Don Coryell on top of their games!
Danny White wasn't playing in this game, nor Kenny Anderson. The great Joe Montana was, though, so you're half right. Fouts may be the most overrated QB ever. Him or Warren Moon. Check out the 1979 playoff game against the Oilers. Fouts cost them the game, as he did in every big game he ever played in. Peace
Neither Danny White or Kenny Anderson are in the Hall of Fame, and it's Highly Unlikely that either one ever will be. Dan Fouts is, and will always be in, the Hall of Fame! How you can even compare two pretty good quarter backs to a Hall of Famer is, as Vecini says in Princess Bride, "INCONCEIVABLE"
@@jaydaire139 Because he doesn't belong in the HOF, that's how. He put up guady numbers, but never won a big game when they needed him. Danny had to wait 4 years for Staubach to retire to even get a shot. Fouts played from day one. Fouts is a bottom tier HOFer, at best. He threw 254 TDs and 242 INTs (51.2%). He led the league in Comp% once, TDs twice, and yardage 4 times. He was a good QB. His teams had 6 winning records in his 15 year career. He threw more TDs than INTs 7 of his 15 years (more than half the time he didn't), and never threw twice as many TDs than INTs. He won 3 - THREE - playoff games in 15 seasons. He never got to the SB. Weak sauce, if you ask me. Danny threw more TDs than INTs in 6 of his 8 years as a starter, 155-132 total (54.0%) He led his team to 3 straight NFC Championships, and filling in when Staubach got hurt, led a come from behind playoff victory. Danny's teams made the playoffs 6 out of 8 years. I'm not saying Danny is better, but Fouts' numbers are not as good, they're just MORE. OH... and White was a great punter, and a good runner. Fouts was a statue. White's lifetime QBR 81.7, Fouts 80.2. Kenny Anderson? QBR 81.9, 197/160 TD/INT (55.1) Won an MVP, led his team to the SB, beating Foutsy. He threw more TDs than INTs 7 out of his 13 years as a starter. He led the NFL in passer rating FOUR TIMES, Fouts never did. Kenny's teams made the playoffs 4 times, winning two games, the same as Fouts. Intangibles? Fouts rushed for 476 yds, a 2.1 avg, and 13 TDs, 6 pro bowls Danny 482, 3.0, 8 TDs and caught 3 passes for 2 TDs. made one pro bowl, was a very good punter, and has a SB ring Anderson 2,220 yds, 5.6 avg, 20 TDs, 4 pro bowls, and beat Fouts head to head to go to the SB, and came close to winning it. I don't know why Fouts is in the HOF. He threw a lot more, less efficiently, than these guys. He had no value other than that. That's how I can compare these two to Fouts. Stats don't lie, and they don't have opinions. These three are essentially the same, passing wise, but the other two won more, and contributed in more ways. Peace
@@comfortat Cry all you want, the truth remains that Dan Fouts is a Gold Jacket bearer, and Danny White and Ken Anderson are not and won't be anytime soon lol. I'm sure in statistics that Ken Anderson and Danny White are superior to John Elway, but is there any question that John Elway doesn't belong in a Gold Jacket? Nope!
@@jaydaire139 Who's crying? Fouts getting a gold jacket doesn't affect me one iota. It diminishes the HOF, though. I feel bad for the truly great QBs who have to be around his pompous ass. I'm glad he choked liked a choking dog in every Championship game he ever played in, though. I'm glad the Oilers stomped his ass like the simpering wimp he was - WITHOUT Earl Campbell and Dan Pastorini. Hoooo weeee, did Dan Farts stink up the joint that day. Chargers fans booed him off the field. It was hilarious. Dan Farts still whines about how cold it was in Cincinnati in '81, when Ken Anderson guided his team up and down the field while the crybaby QB of the Chargers threw bad pass after bad pass. I bet you were proud of him THAT day, huh? He was a loser. He's the Dave Kingman of NFL QBs. Or the Adrian Dantley. Guys who performed well in the regular season, but never won a ring because they couldn't handle the heat. I'm glad your above average QB made the HOF. I'm glad he threw 99 more TDs than Danny White, and 110 more INTs, with a lower QBR and completion %. I'm glad for you that Farts threw 57 more TDs and 82 more INTs than Ken Anderson, along with a lower QBR and completion %. I'm glad he carried the ball 63 more times than Danny, with 24 less yards. I'm glad he gained 1744 less yards on the ground than Ken, and scored 7 fewer TDs. I'm glad because I understand why the Chargers rarely made the playoffs when he was there, thanks to him being an overrated system QB. I'm glad he was a statue who contributed nothing else to his teams, like Danny White did with his excellent punting. BTW, the Chargers went 86-84-1 during his career, easily the worst W/L % of any HOF QB. Anderson's teams went 91-81. White's teams were 62-30. So Dan Farts, starting 69 more games than Danny White, went 24-44-1 in those games. I know you're too much of a fanboy to understand stats, but it is CLEAR that Fouts is one of the worst QBs ever elected to the Hall. But Anderson and White shouldn't be in, either. Which is my point. None of them are HOF worthy. They were all damn good QBs, though. It's probably the toughest job in sports. I noticed you weren't man enough to tell me that I made the case for comparing Fouts to Anderson and White. Instead, you insulted me. Not very mature, sir. But I returned the favor. You are a fanboy who knows nothing about football. Good job! Dan Fouts wasn't as good as these other two. The stats prove it. The wins/losses prove it. The intangibles prove it. The never going to a Super Bowl and always costing your teams important games proves it. Phillip Rivers and John Hadl were better QBs. So was Humphries for a few years. So is this new kid. I'm glad for you that the 5th best QB in Chargers history bribed his way into the HOF. Peace
I remember these days. Honestly, if Dan Fouts and them Chargers would’ve made it to Super Bowl XVI, they would’ve beat us with deep fades. I promise you.
Dwight Clark,, WOW, guy was so under rated pple forget his average yards a game was 100 to that part of season ,of 6 games straight of 100 rec yrds a game ..
This game is 35 years old but watching the 49'ers and Chargers is just like watching the NFL today, the only thing that has really changed are the size of the linemen and the allowable contact with receivers downfield.
All those great Air Coryell years and I always dislike those lame white jerseys and gold pants. It seems they always wore them. This game was very exciting to watch.I remember very well being a young teen.
Richard I wish had the 13 December 1981 Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs San Diego Chargers game. That game was similar to this game, it was a shoot out for the 1980's standards.
There is an irony in the Chargers defeating both of the previous years super bowl participant (81) with their 79 season. In 79 the Chargers would defeat the 2 teams that would be in the super bowl that year. The Chargers beat the Rams 40-16 and several weeks later would defeat the defending super bowl champion Steelers 35-7. It is also ironic that of all the Charger teams that went to the post season, Coryell era 79-83, Ross era 92-95, Shottenheimer/Turner era 04-09,. The only one of those teams that made it to the super bowl had far less pro bowl or name recognized players and possessed an offence that was far less potent. Curious indeed.
joe thiesman in cannon commercial 16:00 the year the redskins won the superbowl in the strike shortened season 3 years later thiesman would have his leg broken by laurence taylor .Russ francis very underated tight end
And Dan Fouts who had the best all around touch passes including the hardest one, the passes to RB on screens and the RBs flat routes when they go to sideline passes to RBs. No one did better then Dan Fouts with his types of throws from hard, soft, easy passes to catch, unless it was J jEFFERSON WHO ALWAYS made those catches away from DBs.. Even thou he is in Dan Fouts a HOFer, he was always under rated despite the media attention to the QBs with the rings...
When football was fun. Played by real men. NO dancing, stupid theatrics. NO dread locks. No preening. Even the commercials were nicer. Compare that to now. The NFL has become excrement. Someone needs to send this tape to William DeVane. He looked great doing those KCar commercials.
They had defenses early in the Don Cornell era (1978 &'79 especially, but from that point on that unit began declining), although eventually that side of the ball became too thin to be an asset (1981 was the first year the Chargers defense became a liability).
Both fouts and terry Bradshaw back up to throw passes, rarely did they run back like Montana, I think this hurt there ability to get time to throw but increased accuracy.
Love the commercials. Chrysler financing touting their 10.9% APR. Hilarious in today's world. Of course, the price of new cars today is more than houses cost back then, so, there's that.
somebody educate me . Candlestick Park for around a quarter of a century or more was one of the worst fields to play on . Players always slipping, taking big clods of turf out of the field with their cleats , and so on . It was like the grass in the natural turf never attached its roots into the ground beneath the turf . Does anyone know why ? please, any and all replies !
emo .....it was right by the bay...a lot of damp air and dew from fog caused the field during football season to be pretty much bad even if it didn’t rain....not to mention a pretty much consistent chilly wind
1:33:40 that is not an illegal forearm . receivers and running backs with the ball are allowed . I mean jesus christ ! defense is beating up on offensive players all game long and they're not supposed to defend themselves ?! wtf ?
@@shawnyoung8752 I remember a closeup replay of Biletnikoff vividly . Its was in slo mo. The angle was such you could see Stabler's arm throwing in the foreground and the ball spiraling toward the sideline. All the while Freddie was running circles around this db. last split second Freddie turns towards sidelin a yard away, put his hands out catches ball pushed out of bounds, around a 15 to 20 yard gain. I swear Freddie wasn't even looking. Of course he wasn't a long threat. but in his prime mid 1960s to early 1970s every year defensive backs said he was the hardest guy to cover with all his crazy moves
Still one of the most entertaining regular season games I remember watching. I must have been 10 years old. What a great era that was for football.

Hard to forget that grab.
@@shanetrimble9265 Amazing play.
I was at this game. Great shootout b/t 2 future HOF’s. Montana looked human at the end there.👍🏈
Contrary to what Enberg said at the end, the 49ers could have made the playoffs with a 4-5 record.
Those are the games we got all of the time
I remember this game it was on a Saturday one of the best game I've ever seen
I was in Germany when this game was played and I remember watching it on AFN!
The commercials are fantastic
I laugh when people say that Brady had so much less help than Montana or others. SF starting RBs in this game were Jeff Moore (who? 12th rd pick?) and Bill Ring (Dick makes the analogy to Rocky Bleier; yeah. a poor poor man's version). The great QB who did the most with the worst cast was Elway in the 80s. He didn't play with any HOFs until Shannon Sharpe. Not one and made 3 SBs
Brady had all those great defenses (Top 3-4 in NFL in those early SB years), very underrated OL and backs, plus HOF K and HC.
Enberg was always overjoyed/giddy during his broadcasts.
he was light in the loafers....
Niiiicceee!! These are the best years, well late '70's too. 9ers dynasty startup years. The original startup!
1:37:03 What a catch!
Thanks Richard, you've helped my collection big time 👍
i was at this game. thxs for loading...
Sat in the north end zone, upper deck. As a Niner fan, still one of the best games I've seen live.
Tony Hill of the Cowboys also played for the 49ers, I don't know for how long, but just like Chandler he was not successful.
This was almost the end of the Air Coryell days. Chargers could have won the Super Bowl in 79, 80, and 81. choke city!!
if they played college teams? yep. but pros? nah
Cmon off scores so quickly. The d is on field for 35 to 38 minutes. Like the bills in 80s early 90s.
Definitely the warning days of the Chargers as contenders. After 1982, the Chargers seemed to settle into the role of competitive spoilers (beating the 11-0 1984 Dolphins for example) and being exciting. The 1983-'86 Chargers could beat anybody, but didn't have enough to string together wins anymore.
candle stick park what a great stadium!! sure wish i could have gone to see it before it was demolished.
Wasn't that stadium, especially for nighttime baseball games, subject to fog or erratic wind?
It was a shit hole but it was OUR shit hole. Funny thing is, the weather in football season, except for the occasional rain storm, was MUCH better in the fall than the summer. Less wind and fog.
I had no idea Fouts and Montana faced off. What a thriller!
The TV commercials alone are worth watching this
The Week 6 matchup, during the abbreviated 1982 NFL season, between the S.D.
Fouts rushed for 476 yds, a 2.1 avg, and 13 TDs, 6 pro bowls
Danny 482, 3.0, 8 TDs and caught 3 passes for 2 TDs. made one pro bowl, was a very good punter, and has a SB ring
Anderson 2,220 yds, 5.6 avg, 20 TDs, 4 pro bowls, and beat Fouts head to head to go to the SB, and came close to winning it.
Dan Farts still whines about how cold it was in Cincinnati in '81, when Ken Anderson guided his team up and down the field while the crybaby QB of the Chargers
threw bad pass after bad pass.
Peace
Alcoa can't wait. Fantastic Finishes
thanks for this one Richard
You're welcome Joe and to everyone who is watching this game.
Ooops! Len Berman's earpiece drops out at 2:50:10. I remember this. I was 17 at the time and remember well watching this game.
thanks Richard I really appreciate it
this nearly was a super bowl rematch if San Diego could have beaten Cincinnati in the previous years AFC championship game
I remember these days. Honestly, if Dan Fouts and them Chargers would’ve made it to Super Bowl XVI, they would’ve beat us with deep fades. I promise you.
WHAT A GAME. Can't believe the ending.
thanks richard. yep, that is what i do now. so happy i do not know the score. please stay as coool as you are.
Dwight Clark,, WOW, guy was so under rated pple forget his average yards a game was 100 to that part of season ,of 6 games straight of 100 rec yrds a game ..
The Bengal game got blocked. Thxs for trying
This game is 35 years old but watching the 49'ers and Chargers is just like watching the NFL today, the only thing that has really changed are the size of the linemen and the allowable contact with receivers downfield.
Steve Veasey I would add the absence of shotgun formations even in obvious passing downs.
Steve Veasey I remember watching this game i was like 12 years old but this was a great game
Bill Walsh and Don Coryell didn't like the shotgun because it interfered with timing patterns.
Such a great game this was.
between two classic Hall of famous classic game
14:51 3-step bomb! You don't see that anymore!
3 steps WTF. Go back to school and learn how to count
Can't believe that first play to Muncie was ruled a fumble. Wow have times changed.
They might as well have given the punters the day off. Only one punt each.
I have this game but it's unlisted, which means it can't be posted. Let me find where I have it saved to. Thank you for suggesting this game.
Richard Waldrup Appreciate you!
Awesome truth…All those games we went wild. The day they beat the Steelers 35-7 the whole neighborhood was in the street playing football. What a day…
joe thiesman in cannon commercial 16:00 the year the redskins won the superbowl in the strike shortened season 3 years later thiesman would have his leg broken by laurence taylor .Russ francis very underated tight end
This should have been the superbowl a few months before!!
cool thanks Richard
I liked the theme music here
81 Chargers/ 49ers would have been a great Super Bowl. Same with 90 Bills/Niners.
When football was fun. Played by real men. NO dancing, stupid theatrics. NO dread locks. No preening. Even the commercials were nicer. Compare that to now. The NFL has become excrement. Someone needs to send this tape to William DeVane. He looked great doing those KCar commercials.
So you're saying too many Black players, huh? You're a douch.
great game
57:30 better make sure you live in a dry climate if you buy a Mercedes . They rust out in no time in a wet climate or up north in winters
Of only San Diego had a defense. That offense is absolutely incredible.
This was probably the worst season for the 49ers under Walsh
Do you have Bengals vs Chargers 1982 50 -34
I had this game posted over a year ago, before the NFL took it down. Let me see if I can post it again.

somebody educate me .
I watched that game plus the first half game the, Battle of Ohio
Kevin Nealan before SNL
could you reload the 1982 playoff game with pittsburg
The entire game was copyrighted and blocked by the NFL. No chance of this one being re-posted. Working on CIN@SD MNF 1982 game now.

Dan Fouts > Joe Montana
1:33:40 that is not an illegal forearm . receivers and running backs with the ball are allowed . I mean jesus christ ! defense is beating up on offensive players all game long and they're not supposed to defend themselves ?! wtf ?
It depended on the teams. Raiders dbacks in 70s were thugs. Raider belitnikoff used dbs agression to his advantage.
Stupidest thing ever was the Chargers leaving San Diego for a city that hates and doesn't even want them (Los Angeles)
No defense .
