Yes - the detective is wrong - assuming they are brewing with a teabag in a mug, which is not clear from the clip. Tea needs water as close to boiling point (100C) as possible for full extraction. Putting the milk in the mug first means the water may be as cool as 80C during the brew. This is also why tea will never taste the same at Everest base camp where the BP of water is 81.5C. In the old days when tea was brewed (almost always) in a teapot there used to be an argument as to whether to put milk in the cup before pouring from the pot. In one sense it did not matter to the flavour but in practice milk last was still better as it was easier to judge just how much milk you needed to have it to your taste. having said that, if that is how he was brought up, milk first will taste better TO HIM as that is what he is used to, but he is not getting the full flavour potential.

I always loved this show, but this was one of the weaker episodes IMO
