  • Here is a video on how I restore and repair a lawn tractor mower to re-sell.
This is one of my hobbies that keeps me busy around my property.
I bought this mower for $120 and sold it 5 days later for $600 with probably 5 total hours of work..
You may do it differently and thats ok. If you have any questions, please ask in the comments

You are correct to not work on dirty machines unless you absolutely must as it can damage some components when reassembling pieces. In addition, clean equipment will show you its imperfections, things needing repaired much more quickly. Appreciate you telling us your combination of cleaning fluids too - if you ever get the chance, can you tell us measurements? 🙂
I recently picked up a solid Husqvarna rider but of course these days, the price was way up there. I found using an electric leaf blower works wonders on cleanup, especially if you do it after every use. Compressed air and a couple of bristle brushes and pointy things will also help. It's key to keep the transmission fan clear of debris, as well as the cylinder heads (access those by removing the top engine cover). I've also been known to use Lemon Pledge (have since the 70's) to clean and protect my machines. All in all I picked up a couple of pointers from this video - thanks for sharing!

Part of the trick to mower flipping as I have learned is being able to find those mowers in that condition and in that price range. In my NE TX area, most try to sell their $150 barely running mowers for $400-500. And the once in a great while “free mowers” need a minimum $500 in work just to sell for a $600 “fair” price. These are the mowers that always need a set of tires or tubes $30-125, new $60 battery, new $25 carb because original is always too trashed, a $100+ seat, $25 oil/filter change, $15 air filter, $15 starter solenoid or voltage regulator, and $10 fuel filter. And that’s for all the top end stuff, once you get to the deck, a whole new range of parts prices start adding up Lol. The barely running mowers generally have at least one bad spindle, idler pulleys, or deck belt which easily add another $150+ in parts to operate back to normal.
As far as cleaning goes, I want to make sure I know mower can be made to run back to normal before putting all that “sweat equity” into cleaning and polishing. I generally like to blow all the caked off debris first, see what I am up against engine wise, and then once it moves on it’s one power again, drive it to my pressure wash station. I agree in after pressure wash, then do the fluid and filter changing and general maint refurbishment.

It’s going to be very hard to buy anything for flipping this year
At the price of new mowers there cover me up with repairs 😊

I'm looking to follow your procedure to clean mine like you did and I'm not even looking to sell it. I do have a few questions; Do you wipe after the WD-40 coating then follow up with the high gloss spray and wipe down? Or do you apply high gloss spray on top of WD-40 then wipe down? Also, WD-40 has a very, very strong smell (truly dislike it's smell) does it go away after the high gloss? Thanks 👍

Sorry for the late reply, I let the WD-40 sit a while to soak in, then I wipe it off before I use the detail spray. The detail spray has a very pleasant smell, and masks the WD-40 smell somewhat. The WD-40 still stinks though. Hope this helps. Thanks

500-600 dollars? I would sell it for a grand. Because it’s really nice, sticks out like a sore thumb.

Highly doubtful. Would you pay $1K for it if you saw it listed? I'd say $700-800 tops.

Hello. Great video. Thank you for the info. Wondering if you used the WD40 with the silicone or just the original WD40. 👍

WD-40 on black plastic is new to me, thanks for that tip. How many cans did the tractor take, I don't remember you mentioning that? I've used ATF (tranny fluid) on plastics and even painted plastic, to ok results.

I actually bought that exact model Mower and it cost me $600. You have inspired me to give it a real once over. Also you seem to have done well for yourself. You have a beautiful place and it is well maintained. Crazy nice. I am really handy as well and have a extra lot which is why I got the mower. I also feel a little inspired to make a go of doing a little repair business for extra money.

One thing I do to all of them is carb and fuel tank flush
Hard to find one with a good seat or belts, blades are never very good
Can easily put 2/3 hundred in them if you’re not careful

I just got my late grandfather's old Cub Cadet SLT 1550 and am preparing to give it a good cleaning and a tune-up. This video was really helpful. I'm real nervous about spraying water around the engine and electrical connections though
