As someone who has experimented with hand making paddles, I can tell you that the paddle I had with a billet aluminum grip and almost no head weight was a wild experience that I had never felt before. The flick was insane and because the weight was in my hand and not in the head, it didn't feel like it strained my arm at all.
I’m still sharing with everyone about this Titanium news. That’s wild and thank you guys for doing your research on this! Still probably going to try the J2 TI anyways 😂
Couldn't help myself. Went and ordered the NEXUS ProStar after this Nerdtown. Also saw a review on it with the designer and owner that sealed the deal. Hoping JohnKew puts the microscope on the face to see up close what Justin was talking about here.
The last section was great! I'm producing a line of paddles currently and using Titanium + Carbon faces and from testing I can say the spin is epic on ours and you can feel the texture difference by touch. I discussed the titanium with my manufacturer and they didn't want to talk too much about how the material is produced lol :)
Thank you for that Nerd Town! This is exactly why we've delayed moving forward with "Titanium" previously. So many different answers from suppliers ranging from "lol no it's plastic flecks" to "yes for real those are titanium bits!" The polyester makes the most sense. But like you said, the feel and end result of the face style itself is the most important.
@@ChorusPickleball it seems to match up with folks saying it feels softer, but springier. It could be placebo or more like tennis strings. Though I’m curious if there is enough polyester there to make that much of a difference.
Justin Whistleblower unchained … just when you thought NERDTOWN couldn’t get any better. I hope this reality show includes secret manufacturing video footage … I’m picturing Justin wearing a disguise, and then Louis asking for donations to bring him home. 😛
Justin hit the mark (excuse the pun) but I only took a look at the Mark Pickleball offerings because of Justin. After watching Justin on the Pod for a while, his honesty and integrity comes through every week. I would trust that brand because of Justin. But brand integrity is key in the paddle journey.
Hey, my favorite Vamps … I got questions: 1) How did you two meet? Who bit who? 2) So … Titanium faced paddles surface is made from my grey dry-tech shirts? This is so confusing. 3) Is butt weighting attractive or just a fad? fyi … Sir Kew and Eddie humored me and discussed my “replaceable cores” dream, but when it came to being a butt weight doubter, crickets. 🤐 I went too far … need to learn boundaries.
Great stuff fellas.. QA idea: How to become an ambassador for a paddle company? Is there a sale quota or any other requirements? I’m not really trying to make money but do like certain companies more than others.
Interesting content in this episode. IMO, on titanium, no value in discussing a topic without hard evidence. Titanium mystery I find it very interesting. Amazing how paddle companies get creative with marketing materials and manufacturing processes as "technology".
Great info, however, you CAN buy sheets of carbon fiber with titanium actually threaded on it. It is mainly used in automotive. It is not cheap, but it is available from European suppliers.
🤯best trip to nerd town yet! Kinda scandalous. Also, I wonder if it would have some characteristics similar to tennis strings like loosing tension overtime or wear since it is softer than carbon fiber.
Furthermore, if they don’t use real titanium, isn’t it false advertising? Case in point, this is straight from the B&B website under Shogun specs: “Face Material: T700 Carbon Fiber and Titanium weave” That seems pretty clear it should be part of the face material, not just ‘titanium color’.
Just had a thought on Reload. If you often play tournaments you could also keep 1 of the sets of faces for just tournament play and then put on the other more worn out set for normal rec play. (wow - bubble burst on titanium - as a B&B ambassador I’d have a hard time calling it titanium any more 😢)
Curious if you could provide a ranking of plushness vs firm. It seems to be a factor that I would really appreciate when making a decision to try out a paddle but unfortunately not many paddle reviewers has a chart ranking all paddles based off their stiff/plushness. I know it's going to be hard to make that list since it's a very subjective feeling.
I shouldn’t help you two stir up sh.!.t … but I can’t help myself 😁 “Polyester is a manufactured synthetic fiber. It is a kind of plastic and is usually derived from petroleum. Alternatives to oil-derived polyester exist, including those made from recycled plastic, agricultural crops, or even waste.” we talkin about plastic … plastic … bad enough plastic inside … now a plastic sandwich come for the plastic core … stay for the plastic surface weave 😛😂
I have a question unrelated to this episode and would appreciate it if you guys could provide your opinion. Do logos and patters printed on the carbon or Kevlar surface affect the paddles' performance, especially as it relates to spin? I am asking this question because have a paddle with carbon/Kevlar surface (I prefer not to mention the brand at this movement) that has a fairly sizable logo printed in the center of the paddle head on one side, and it appears to me based on the pitch of the sound and the resistance while rubbing a ball against different areas of the paddle that the area with logo is slightly less grippy than the rest of the paddle.
Currently run a J2K. I like the spin and control but feel a little more power/pop is required for my game. Some say to upgrade to the Pro but I’m not sure if that will sacrifice the spin and control with its tighter weave? I see you tested the Ti coming out and others have recommended the Shapeshifter, DBD, etc. What are your thoughts? Appreciate any response
Yard stick or steel rule. splitting hairs by 1/8th could just be the edge guard. For nerds, could Justin go into "adhesion" or "bonding" of foam to PolyPro cores. Nexus ProStar is filling the cells with foam and my concern is they will pop loose and rattle. Since starting 8 yrs ago, I've bought around 35 paddles. Lots of brands. Currently have played all the tech, shapes etc. except the new TI models. Wanting to find a soft feel or plush feeling face tech to move away from power like my GB Pro Pwr E. Placement and touch is my goal.
I know it’s kinda old news at this point, but any thoughts on the Proton Series 1? I’ve been contemplating getting one now that they’re actually available as a “long-term” paddle I don’t have to replace, but I’m apprehensive given the current regulation environment.
Great episode today, loads of information. What are you guys thoughts on over grips? Any favorite brands or types? I’m still using my solinco hyper grips cause I am a sweater but still looking for a good one.
Do graphics on paddle faces reduce spin or make spin inconsistent? I’ve noticed on several paddles that I have felt the face off when you get to the painted or graphics part it’s not as greedy as the raw section.
Should paddle speed be limited using some sort of device? I think so. Mini sports had to put in parameters because the technology was getting too good. Baseball is the first that comes to mind with their bats.
2 mins in and we already went from PB to the capabilities of fairly new amputees 🤣 Edit: thank you for exposing big polyester like that and their titanium ploy.. be safe out there
So when China quits sending us paddles because of Justin’s dirty secret whistleblowing …. paddle nerds with our paddle collections will have the last laugh. XSPAK … $500. 🤑 Is the barbecue sauce real?
Justin is a damn gem! Makes me surprise laugh out loud every time with something random like his roll on the “complain brags”😂

Justin dropping fire. Lawsuits coming for titanium claims now 😂 love me a polyester paddle all day still

Scary that suppliers aren't trustworthy about their materials.

This Nerd town was off the chart!! Glad Justin went deep on TI and TI weave.
Now I know and can say why I know. Thanks Justin. King of the Nerds.

Great pod, first time listening won't be my last.
Titanium is flamible but it's not easy to ignite.
Best paddle podcast out here, thank you for keeping it nerdy

Justin just taught paddle companies not to name their products after suppliers offerings. Pickleball Etc, DBA: Nerdtown consulting 🤓

Great Pod !!! Reload coming out with different Paddle shapes ? Lower swing weights ? Face sheet Textures & Materials ? Foam Cores ? 🤔🤔🤔
Great info, however, you CAN buy sheets of carbon fiber with titanium actually threaded on it. It is mainly used in automotive. It is not cheap, but it is available from European suppliers.
Love, love pods like this! Please keep getting into the weeds!

Awesome insight with this episode! Looking forward to some more polyester! 👕👕👕
Looking forward to seeing the Ripple and Olympus reviews! Thank you, guys!
Learned about warp and weft from my denim head days. 😅
So, not sure I heard you say whether the Shogun is also not real titanium?? Great video guy, thank you & keep ‘em coming!! 👊

As a huge denim nerd, I loved hearing the terms "warp/weft" thrown around this episode.
Titanium or not, all I know is that I love it!
Nice ride to Nerdtown! Q&A: how many of the 3000 fibers are "Titanium" ?
Thanks for the buying guide. Would you consider making a video to answer the question?
Great pod fellas, my favorite part was watching Louis trying so hard to not crack up during Justin's nerd town lecture😂.

Thanks for another fun and interesting podcast. Keep up the great work!
Great pod! Thanks guys
Would love to hear a deep dive in a future episode!
Justin - MTI graduate of pickleball paddles and polyester process:)
Another reason to not get a reload. The Ronbus Nipple Ripper (Ronbus Ripple). Get that foam power with control.
Daaaamn.. you smug, genious bastards... is there a way I can unhear the titanium part? 😂 solid pod, fellas, that's good stuff!
You can lower SW in golf by adding weight to the grip end “counterbalancing”. I wonder if its because the lever is longer than a paddle or a rackets

Justin your Free Agent now - no more secrets :) lol
Looking forward to the j2k vs j2k comparison
I would like to see a Pickleball paddle company advertise that their peddles last longer. They are big investments to wear out so soon.

My bad! Not my best choice 🤦
@@PickleballPursuithey, no arm no foul.. No need to apologize, we know you mean well, the world could use a little less censorship 🙌🏻
Whatever. You didn’t spend 12 months on Mars mining titanium. The real question? How many times did Justin get his lunch money stolen in grade school?
Considering he knows the term for vertical and horizontal weaves… my guess is A LOT
If I find out Justin dated the hottest cheerleader in high school I may commit suicide.
More and more titanium paddles.
Then they slab their face when they said there are no real titanium
Waiting to learn more on the NEXUS ProStar
If your paddle face starts losing some of its grip, can you use sandpaper to refreshing it?
Ty4 ur vid 😊
Titanium just to get people's attention?
Any tournaments that has singles to play?😊
Get a paddle that has the metrics you like, then customize, you can only customize so much then you created a different paddle!

Now that you told us that titanium is not really titanium. What exactly is the benefit of it over say Kevlar or standard carbon fiber
What's the handle length on the Ronbus Ripple R2?
5.5"

Creative marketing 😀
i guess titanium is better for marketing than polyester-carbon :)
Not misleading though.
🤯
Aww man, if it's not titanium, then why call it that. It's pretty misleading. Just because of a color they call it that? Ugh.
