    Introduction:
    Welcome to the most comprehensive F140R Roland Digital Piano Review you’ll ever need: honest, to the point, balanced, and from someone who plays them professionally. Stu Harrison at Merriam Pianos guides you through every aspect of the F140R, from its action and sound, to its features and connectivity options.
    Please be sure to check out our full reviews of Roland digital pianos, including their FP and DP series, and of course, if it’s your first time to the channel, we’d love it you subscribed!
    Action:
    The Roland F140R features their PHA-4 Ivory-touch action with escapement, which is a pro-level action found in instruments all the way up to (and above) the $2000 price point. In fact, the F140R has exactly the same action and ‘brain’ as the RP501 at more than $500 above, which makes the F140r an exceptional value for people not in need of a full cabinet and want to source their own bench (the RP501r comes with a proper Roland bench, bigger speakers and a full cabinet).
    Additionally, the PHA-4 is the exact same action that you’ll find in the FP30 and FP60. It has a very well executed ‘faux’ ivory keytop feel and ebony feel on the black keys, a believable escapement simulation, and a rugged physical construction that doesn’t give off unreasonable mechanical sounds or ‘clunks’.
    Although it doesn’t list it in all literature, the PHA-4 is a triple sensor action, meaning that the midi output from the F140R is ‘studio grade’, making it a great home-production companion as well.
    Tone:
    The F140r is driven by Roland’s widely-acclaimed Supernatural Sound Engine, with ample polyphony and lots of editable parameters in the “Piano Designer” app. The onboard speakers sound roughly similar to an FP30 (or a former FP50 for those that remember that model), with a reasonably round tone that doesn’t feel too hollow, despite not having a thunderous bass.
    The quality of the patches is extremely good for the most part, with only the occasionally ‘meh’ patch through the e-pianos or organ patches. By and large, there’s at least one extremely high-quality, professional tone in each category to use.
    Other Features
    The Bluetooth connectivity is another impressive inclusion for the price range, especially given that the Yamaha equivalents such as the YDP series, don’t offer any Bluetooth connectivity whatsoever. The triple pedal system with constant sensing technology is a nice added touch of authenticity as well, and the light-weight but rugged integrated stand still makes the F140r somewhat portable without sacrificing the look of ‘furniture’.
    Conclusions
    The F140r offers a feature-packed, compact, and contemporary-looking digital piano that should be totally sufficient for beginners as well as hobbyist players looking for an easy-to-use, good sounding digital piano. The instrument is substantially more engaging to use with a smart-phone or tablet, so definitely spend the time to make sure you understand how to use the Bluetooth connections, and we’d also recommend using the F140 with a high-quality set of headphones to take full advantage of the Supernatural Sound Engine,.

    Thanks Stu, I’ve watched several videos while trying to decide on a portable piano under $1000. I keep coming back to yours. I just ordered a Roland fp30. I have to say as a lifetime performer, actor, director, improve, you have a great delivery. Informative and easy to follow. I’ve been playing guitar for about 50 years but just this year I had that Epiphany where it stopped being mechanical and became instinctive. Now, I’m ready for piano. Thanks again 👍🎹

      And then I returned the FP 30 and bought the RD 88❗️wow I have played it at least 3-6 hours a day or more. I can’t keep my hands off of it. I followed your blues tutorial and I’ve got that down , including the Charleston beat. What fun. Not grasping part 2 as well😱 but I will. Thanks and please do more tutorials.

    Having turned 40, I have a huge urge to learn to play piano. I’m torn between the Roland FP-30, RP-102 or F140R. I want it to be a piece of furniture, so the FP30 would be purchased with the proper stand and three pedals, which is why the other two models come into play now. Really struggling with what to go for.

      I chose to buy the F140R. I don't know what the prices are on the other pianos, but even though this one is around €900, the sound and functions is beautiful. The piano itself is beautiful and the sound, even with headphones, is just like you're not even wearing headphones. Beautiful musical piece of furniture, would definitely recommend

    Thank you! I've had a F-110 for ten years now. I am so satisfied of it that I think to go for the F-140. The sound and keys are great. I have something to complain with the software, because I lost many functionalities after 6 years, I don't know if it is to be considered the normality.

    Thank you for this detailed test. Roland says the same "88 keys (PHA-4 Standard Keyboard: with Escapement and Ivory Feel) "for the FP-30 / RP102 / F-140. While on the touch the FP-140 looks different closer to a piano touch. What do you think? Does the "Piano Partner 2" application have the same full functionality as with the RP102 ou fp-30 on the F-140?

    • @MerriamPianos
      @MerriamPianos  4 роки тому +1

      Hey slinky! The Piano Partner 2 has the same functionality on the F140r vs RP102, with the exception of the number of voices you can select. But the rhythm function, recording function, score, etc all work the same. I do find that the F140r 'seems' to feel slightly different than the RP102, but I think that's the difference in cabinet construction more than anything. The F140r seems more solid, so I think it makes the action seem to have less give than in the RP102 - just my opinion :) Thanks for the comment! -stu

    • @MerriamPianos
      @MerriamPianos  7 місяців тому +1

      Hi! Brent here! Bluetooth headphones do not work with any digital piano. The issue is that there is a delay between when a key is struck and when the sound is heard. This makes Bluetooth headphones problematic for use with digital pianos. Consequently, they are not compatible with digital piano models.

    I have owned a Roland F140R for about 3 years. Recently, my wife and I have noticed an occasional problem where a chord with keys press at the same time results in a distinct separation of the note sounds. Turning off and back on clears the fault for a while. The problem seems to happen after maybe 20 minutes. The local authorized vendor hasn’t replicated the fault but has suggested not using BlueTooth. That seems odd since BT is featured by Roland as the way to connect to their apps. Has anyone else had a similar problem and what was the fix?

    Would you perhaps know why when I connect the F140-R's output (from either the rear "output" or the headphone jacks) to my laptop via the sound interface, and record in Audacity or my DAW the sound quality is really poor and tinny like LW radio, and lacking all the richness of the instrument's native speaker and headphones? Turning up the gain on sound interface makes no difference and I've tried lots of different cables.

    • @MerriamPianos
      @MerriamPianos  Рік тому

      Hi there! It is difficult to properly troubleshoot without being in front of the actual piano, but it is possible that there are issues with the output jacks themselves. Sometimes, headphone outputs aren't the best signal to begin with, but, given the fact that you have tried changing the other variables and assuming that the piano sounds fine out the onboard speakers, I'm guessing it may be the jacks that are compromised. I would recommend taking the piano to be inspected by a digital piano technician if possible.

    Roland is derelict in its duty to support this purchaser of one F-140R (Contemporary Black) in that I had placed it behind me at my L-Shaped deak so that I could hook it into my DAW easily.
    Unfortunately, I neglected to remember it was there when I rose up exhausted one night soon after moving it behind me there, and blammo it falls on its back, yet is just fine aside from three broken I/O ports that were broken and/or bent.
    I have this here Digital Temp Control Soldering Station, all needed tools, fifty years working with and designing & building circuitry that functions to spec.
