Wind Slab Avalanche Case Study

  • Pat Moore and Baldface Lodge have teamed up to create the "Risk Maturity" course for the past few years. This course is a deep dive into filming snowboarding in the backcountry safely and effectively through avalanche education, first aid, weather forecasting, and group dynamics. My favorite part of this course, though, is the conversations with my peers and mentors. Every night of the course, they let people present case studies in a judgment-free safe space to learn from our experiences in the mountains. For example, this year, I shared the story of my avalanche that ended our latest film, "Wind Slab." This avalanche was the first in over 12 years of backcountry snowboarding that I was involved in, and the experience was very humbling that taught me many things. I wanted to share my experience and the process we follow before heading into the mountains for a big day of filming or riding and share the pieces of knowledge I have with you. Thank you to the whole Baldface family for hosting us and opening this space to grow and set a precedent for professional backcountry snowboarding and to the backcountry snowboarding community as a whole for the bottomless flow of inspiration.
Guest questions from Bryan Fox, Pat Moore, Hana Beaman, Griffin Siebert, Danny Davis, John Buffery, Lexi Dupont, Forrest Shearer, Forest Bailey, Mark Sollors, and Jody Wachniak.
If you plan to spend time in the backcountry, please take the time to gain the knowledge to make your experience the most enjoyable. Visit avalanche.org to find your local avalanche information.

I worked at baker that season and I’ll never forget riding up 8 that day and seeing the aftermath of that slide. Thank you for sharing what happened. This kind of education will save lives.

Hearing that part about the Ex-ski patrol staying around because of a gut feeling felt super emotional, sometimes the universe just send you a message

I have watched this a few times now. So glad it didn't have a worse outcome. Thank you for including the footage in your project, and making this video available. Thanks to all the contributors. I am an avalanche survivor and still dealing with it. This helps. Thanks. Rest In Peace Mike McKelvey

I missed hearing him mention he had a beacon on. Also would have been nice to hear the response plan to individuals in his crew that would have made the search after his burial. I assume those members we're prepping to, pull beacons to begin a search, with the tools necessary to do so.

Thank Goodness that this was in a popular area of mt baker side country viewable by public ski resort. I don’t know why all the talk about the avalanche conditions, the problem was the butt check on the landing that created the avalanche J/K. Glad your okay and nice line other than the slide….Rip Jim, Chris and John

Seeing the pressure that overcrowding is causing.... People like these guys are doing an excellent job doing risk management. Its tough to see everyone putting so much pressure on themselves and the mountain, but awesome people like Austen are keeping it a true as possible to the roots of the rainy kingdom of almost canada

Thanks for the share. This is so valuable to all who want to enter the back country, coming from someone who is pretty new to it, has a love for Baker and a healthy respect for that zone. Mad respect for your humble and honest telling of the tale. Much appreciated, glad you made it.

I think he’s talking about “koonhead” airing off something 5 minutes after haha. The guys name is Morgan Rose, he wears one of those raccoon hats and is infamous at baker. Met him in the heather lot last year, he introduced himself by wu-tanging the joint he was smoking lmao
