That's nice I went to the library and checked out a book on breakdown backpacking tools. It has instructions on a bowsaw so I built one. Since the old blade I used is dull now I can sharpen it. Thanks for the friendly tutorial.

Bruce Pender I tend to get a little long winded when I talk about my shop, but that building has been many a safe haven for 115 years. So a 15+ minute video showing how I have things set up is but a speck in the life of this old Shop of mine. I like to think it opened its doors to me and I am very appreciative and respectful to have this building giving me and my wares shelter. Glad I was able to help inspire! I've had videos that I had to start over with because they would get stuck in the "processing" stage. Aggravating! Chin up! The States are Warming Up!!!

it really makes a much better saw if you start by leveling all the teeth using a mill file before sharpening the teeth. That way, all the teeth will end up the same height. Many modern blades have induction hardened teeth that are too hard to sharpen with ordinary files...... don't despair,.... cheap diamond files will do the job, though it takes a little longer.

Thank you for the good information. I have owned my bow saw for 47 years and I have never sharpened it. I recently purchased a new blade for it but the new blade does not appear to be of the same quality as the old blade. now that I know how to sharpen the old blade, I am sure that it will be easier to remove my dead trees.

Once again a very nice job, Bruce. In setting the teeth did you only bend half of the teeth, or did you go back and bend the skipped teeth in the opposite direction?

Yes halfway through the video I did turn the saw around and did it all over again. Thanks for watching.

A lot of modern blades have heat hardened teeth, I don't think you can sharpen them with a file, except maybe a diamond file or Dremel tool perhaps? I bought 3 old bow saws last year and 2 have lost all their set and the other has a simpler "pin" blade with very little set , so good to be able to check how it should be in the video, thanks :)

So many old hand tools just get scrapped people take power for granted. But not just that you can not get the quality tools now everything seems to be designed to self destruct so you have to get another.

I don't know about not using fuel. My bowsaw runs on home made beef jerky though.
