Thanks for the really informative video - my art history class discussed the Justinian mosaic but I had no idea that the cloak he was wearing was this valuable :x looking forward to your next video! :D
I would love to hear that lecture...Justinian was a pretty interesting guy, and art history is such a massive part of human history I always wonder why it's not often included in curriculum.
I recently found your History of Colors videos the other day and have been watching a few, they're so informative and cool! But I'm just now realizing these are old videos, and I'm bummed because after watching this one, I was so pumped to see one about Vermilion... I doubt you'll be doing a vermilion video anytime soon😩
There's a city named Tyre in Lebanon, Tuirean was an ancient celtic god, and the Etruscans had a king Tyhranius. The Tuirean sea in Italy. There's an ancient Irish story about the tragedy of Tuireans sons. It tells of travels and war all through Mediterranean and up to Denmark.
Great info. I believe they just found clothing in Israel that was made with this dye. Also I love Pliny the Elder from Russian River, but hate crushing sea snails.
She looks great but in my head I was waiting for her to put on more make-up while telling us all about purple dye like they do in the other streaming. Loved it.
MAKE (videos about) ALL THE COLORS!!!!! but I'd really like to watch you explain how this royal purple became the red used by cardinals. I love your channel. I think I heard you talk about a blog post explaining De differences between illustration and art, but can't find the link. Also... where should I post my art question to you :D
+CinnamonCari :D That was a while ago! Here's the link: littlearttalks.tumblr.com/post/82055937072/hi-i-came-across-your-blog-and-saw-posts-on You can post questions here on YT or tweet @Littlearttalks :)
I recently read How to be both by Ali Smith and there is a lot of talk about painting in there and also colour and things. Apart from being a nice book overall ;) Was thinking you might like it while watching.
I laughed way too hard at the annotation that the Talmud gave women the right to divorce a husband who became a dyer after marriage 😂😂 they realize the smell was THAT BAD
Not semitic - they had red hair!! Not Tribe of Dan either! Granted the Phoenician alphabet is identical to Proto-Hebrew but that’s only because they were! both enslaved in Babylon!
+C.E. Parks That's because there never has been a "the recipe" or singular process in existence. The color would have changed depending on how the dye was handled/used/blended after extraction. Simply changing a mordant will alter the color produced on a finish product. Each ancient Bob Ross would have a different recipe.
This is the root of the 'Royal Purple' of european nobilities, the Phoenicians traveled much further than the later greeks. In the bible they are the *tribe of dan*. (serpent / leviathan)
my God you are incredibly cute almost chubby cheek BeBe Girl , you take care of your health and i wish you all the best of everything Good , be good be strong very cute cutey
And then,Barbarossa in his writing to emperor Manuel said,"I am the Roman emperor, you are just the king of the Greeks",pity man you just lacked the tradition to claim what you audacious said.
Very informative. I stumbled on a mention of this dye in the Bible. Can’t wait to share the details with my congregation on Sunday. Thank you
Note to self: the Bible is just a history book that's been modified by multiple cultures and governments and empires and also you sound like a nazi
@@colbicolbiWTF well shoot man, you're obviously having a bad day. I do hope it improves.
They used to put it in their eyes as the way to prophecy
The prophets christed their eyes with the purple to prophecies

This is a quality piece of content. Absolutely flawless
yeah, but they were about wiped out by them, it takes 12,000 to make one small garment.
THANK YOU 👏👏 someone who knows the actual history. My ancestors 😊
In the Coasts of Oaxaca in Mexico, molluscs are not killed, they are "milked" every lunar cycle and left to rest and recover.
This is very interesting and an impressive history on my favorite color!

+1book1review Sounds right up my alley ;) Thanks for the recommendation!
Love this, thanks! :)
My brother is currently extracting Alizarin from Madder Root, could you please do a color history video on that?
super informative!
I really learned that the ancient Phoenicians used murex shells to make the tyrian purple dye with lots of murex shells to make this color.
Very educational. Thanks!
Do one on Han Purple
This is the type of dye made by Lydia in the Bible (Acts.)
My daughter is a Lydia, and all her stuff is purple.

BUT BUT THE POOR SNAILS!!!!! D:
+ReadHeadPat I'm sorry snails! D:

What do you mean may have the Phoenicians did create the purple dye it's not a may have
Karen-thx for the info-I wish you had worn purple lipstick!
Phonecian, Punic, Purple. The highest colour of the Rainbow. Tyre, and Europa. The Moorish Empire.
Neat

The past: War for robbing purple paint (tyrian purple)
Now: War for robbing yellow metal (gold)
Long live Byzantium!
Byzantine Tyrian purple is reddish
Stefan Tyre is in Lebanon
+Ali Ghais Lebanon was in the the Byzantine Empire, and it wasn't the only source of the snail in the Mediterranean.
@@vault703overseer2 tyre existed before the Byzantine empire and phoenician uses purple earlier than Greeks

Pliny didn't describe the whole process either...
+C.E. Parks What do you think is missing from his description of the process?
+Little Art Talks That's wha I understand. He wrote the process based on what he knew. No one thinks he got the entire recipe.

the poor snails this was very cruel way just to produce a dye
The blue one (3:16) was used by the jews until 70CE when the technique was lost.
Vegans are gonna flip their shit over this LOL
