      My garage door opener has a lock button on the door panel that disables the remotes. The manual suggested using it for vacations. Could also use every night once in for the night. My outside keypad still works when lock feature is engaged.

    Great points, I didn't know about the boxes, I only knew about the small fob bags.
    I'll touch on a couple others.. If you don't carry the papers reg and ins. make sure to let a person that borrows it know they aren't in there, (some places might require a paper form). Don't set your home address in the nav or gps, if equipped, a thi-ef can then go to your home, even if any identifying papers are not in vehicle (or a parking attendant moving it). When out shopping or whatever, use the door lock button instead of the fob, so you aren't sending a signal across a parking lot that can be intercepted by a device. Also turn off the horn beep if you do lock it with fob, so that potential thie-ves can't see you walking away from a just parked vehicle, knowing you have just arrived and they have time to do whatever they want. It won't stop a determined person or group but every little thing helps.

    Good info - thanks! Some of the things you talk about seem like glaring design flaws by the manufacturer. For example, cheap ICs have been around for many years that implement rolling codes, there is no excuse for for any security device like a key fob to be susceptible to a sniffer/replay attack. I just checked on the built-in programmable garage door opener, and sure enough, it will open the garage door even when the car is off and the key fob isn't present - that's an egregious design defect.

    These electronic convenience features are mighty convenient for criminals as well. Stay in your car they steal your signal.Get out, they assault you. But a vise grip brand welders clamp on a garage door track stops it from opening.So does shutting the opener off. All you can do is make yourself a hard target. Extra security takes time for you but it isnt the criminals friend either. Lock up everything but you cant enjoy it.Its a two edged sword. Get involved politically to eliminate judges and laws soft on crime. Criminals keep aggressive dogs in their houses while out. Its gotten so they don't fear cameras and scoff at the laws and enforcement personnel. Itll get worse too.

    Honestly, I don’t know why these fobs even exist. What problem did they solve? What was wrong with a turn key ignition. We did that for nearly 100 years. These fobs are just a cash grab. They charge outrageous prices for replacements.

      They were a cash grab but also solved a short term problem without thinking of the consequences. Plus. They basically starting doing a lot of the same things at same time as the early flip phones. And then to vehicle key fobs, sometimes the basic turning of a key would break due to wear or ice. There’s several other reasons for any fobs. To boot, thinking your app to open everything is still hackable. Just saying.

    • @ex.spaceshuttle.worker
      @ex.spaceshuttle.worker 6 місяців тому +3

      I agree. Murphy's Law if it ain't broke don't fix. The key worked for a hundred years to start cars and why do they have fobs to start it. What is the advantage of a fod over a key. I like the key in the ignition cuz I also know where the keys are at all the time. I just bought a used 2020 Honda at the local Honda dealership and one of the first things I asked is it a key or a fod and the lady salesman said she didn't know when she came out says the key I said great I don't want the fod.. I've seen videos where people are sitting across the street from a dealership in the daytime with a scanner and picks up codes for the cars on the lot and then middle of the night they steal play car from the dealerships lot unfortunately one of my cars is a 2022 muscle car and it's a fod. And I hate it. luckily I bought it strictly for car shows and not a daily driver and 99% of the time it's in the garage. And the other 1% is at a car show never to a local store. if I can convert this to a ignition key I would

    I've tried faraday bags, and found that they work well soon after you buy them, but they quickly stop working. I'm guessing that maybe they develop radio "leaks" as they wear, and no longer keep that signal isolated. So, I wouldn't use the bags.
    I've also found that the batteries on the key fobs run out very quickly when they're placed in faraday bags or boxes, because the key fob is always trying to communicate with your vehicle. If the bag or box is working correctly, then the fob can't see the vehicle and starts amping up the transmit power to as high as it will go. Then it is transmitting at its highest power it can but still not able to talk to the vehicle. And that runs the battery down really fast.

    In my country we don’t keep license and registration papers in the car. Rego info is kept at home and the cops will run your credit card sized DL from their car computer to find out about you. Most people keep their DLs in their wallets/purses.
    I always lock my car upon exiting and I park in my locked garage. There is nothing in my glove box but some gum and maybe a lip gloss or an extra pair of sunglasses. I keep nothing personal in the car, not even random coins in the console. I don’t treat my car like an extension of my house. I love my car but its only function is to get me from A to B safely. So thieves are shit out of luck trying to steal from me or finding out where I live

  • @TheKingOfInappropriateComments
    @TheKingOfInappropriateComments 6 місяців тому +1

    You need hard copies of your registration and insurance for the po-po. The last things you want to go is go reaching into a gun safe to pull those out or have to unlock your phone to give to the cops. Maybe just find some place else to hide it like under the dash.

    • @HowToHomeDIY
      @HowToHomeDIY  6 місяців тому

      Hard copies are not always required, depending on the state. So this will be a case by case issue. I did mention it is recommended to carry the physical copies in a wallet or a purse or a lockable safe or built in compartment. There is no issue with someone opening a safe in their vehicle to retrieve documentation but it would be advised to let the officer know what you are doing and what he or she can expect to see in the locked safe or compartment. You would not put your gun in with your documents for numerous reasons. Insurance however is usually a lot less serious to have a hard copy. Usually a digital copy can be shown as long as it mirrors the hard copy. Law enforcement is going to run everything regardless to make sure it all matches. One thing on the registration that I remember looking for when I was a police officer was making sure the decal number on the registration matched the decal number on the expiration sticker.

    • @TheKingOfInappropriateComments
      @TheKingOfInappropriateComments 6 місяців тому

      Of course whether the officer is going to let you get out and go fishing around for documents in a locked safe, could be a gun, maybe yes, maybe no, is entirely up to them.

    • @HowToHomeDIY
      @HowToHomeDIY  6 місяців тому +1

      @inappropriatecommentsgalore well yes and no. Yes it is their stop and will conduct it how they see fit so that part is correct. But if they insist on you producing your registration, they have to allow you to do so. There is no law saying I cannot have my papers in a locked safe in my vehicle. We also come across people daily that are carrying either on their person or in a location within their mobile conveyance. It’s nothing like you see on tv where all of a sudden the officer gets jumpy and an itchy trigger finger. It’s very normal.

    • @TheKingOfInappropriateComments
      @TheKingOfInappropriateComments 6 місяців тому

      It's just really risky for both the civilian and the officer to have to do that. I'm not discounting the information or the suggestion overall.Those documents should be hidden somewhere other than the glove box because that's the first place the thieves are going to look and I am going to find a hiding place today for that stuff. That said, reaching for stuff, handing over an unlocked phone, also things I would avoid. I would rather take a chance with that info getting in the wrong hands than the risk of getting shot or tasered for reaching for something.@@HowToHomeDIY

  • @stevenb.182
    @stevenb.182 6 місяців тому

    Additionally.....change the door settings to negate the "proximity feature". The car looks for the key signal. The key and the car "talk" to each other. Blocking the key signal is half the solution. If you turn off the "proximity signal" there is no signal coming from the car either, for the thief to work with. Further....you should block the OBD port, or install a "dummy" port, and hide the original. This can be done with a "Y" harness, and/or a physical lock. Finally there is the need to block access to the CANBUS system. Best bet here, is to secure the CANBUS connectors or junctions in tamper-proof boxes, or move them within the car, to hidden spots. The longer you delay the thief from getting your car, the more likely he will be, to just give up, and move on to an easier target.

    Have never seen an owner's manual personalized with vehicle info. In fact, owner's manuals are one of the last things thrown in to the vehicle before leaving the assembly plant. If any info is in it, the dealer morons put it into or on the manual.
    As for insurance certificate and registration...do people really leave that in the IP box; if they need to have them? If needed on person, keep in your wallet and if you have a second driver have them place a copy of each in their wallet (again, if needed).
    Many states allow smart phone IDs. My state allows the ins certificate to be on my phone.
    And last but not least, good idea about the garage door opener, but with a majority of cars coming with a homelink type system in the mirror...they need to steal the vehicle or the mirror and supply 12 volts to the mirror.
    Might want to stick to homes......
    And really a farada cage for your remotes? Just tell people to go back to just using a key....it is possible to replace a push start with a key.....

    100% False. Good luck trying to get a key from a dealership without photo ID. 2nd. Keys don't come programmed from the dealer. A diagnostic tool needs to be hooked up to the vehicle to program it. Don't believe me. Walk into a dealership with just your registration & find out.

    • @HowToHomeDIY

      Saying it’s 100% false is false. I said in the video this is the least of the worries as there are safeguards in place. But this has been done before. Certain makes and models that I won’t put out publicly have been more susceptible to it than others. As far as the diagnostic tool, anyone can buy one easily online along with a program that does the pairing. So yes, it has been an issue before and continues to be.

    Just to let some know, if start storing your vehicle information like some states are moving to digital drivers license. Once you open that that information on your phone and hand it to a police officer your phone is now free game to search. Not saying that you would exactly have anything illegal in there but they can use that information seen against you and request a warrant to seize your phone.
