How were the school admin supposed to know the family just bought a gun for the kid. Your logic is ridiculous. Stop shifting blame and recognize that this is entirely on the family and that dumb kid.
The parents were completely negligent. Schools have protocols, they followed the protocols and told the parents to take the kid home and they didn’t want to. The parents texted the kid saying “don’t do it” that means they were fully aware of his state of mind.
I can't believe I'm hearing this right now so technically the school and the parents knew that this boy had problems and neither one of them did anything? There were red flags they could have saved those children.
I'm not disagreeing with you at all, but at least the school was mandating that the parents get him into therapy within 48 hours. It's just terrible that it was two days too late. But I totally agree that the school dropped the ball with letting him go back to class.
@@kellieneville2796 school should have sent him off with police and have parents pick him up after being cleared. Not saying every shooting had parents backing their kid up but this could have been avoided if instead of “mandating” psych help they just went with it because guess what, he isn’t the only one going to school, I wouldn’t want my kid showing up until it’s 100 percent safe no if’s ands or but’s.
Gun owners who don't act responsibly should be held accountable. The parents were grossly negligent and irresponsible gun owners and parents. They deserve to have the book thrown at them.
How about those car owners too? you know the ones that have multiple DUI's, drive with a suspended license that are roaming the streets as I type. What are you going to do about them?
@@harley8680 yep, same. Toss them in a dark hole and don’t let them out. DUI and those who continue to drive after their license is revoked are equally grossly negligent as these awful parents.
@@harley8680 Are you trying to argue against these charges or for holding irresponsible parents accountable when the kid gets multiple dui's and kills someone? Because, either you make good sense, or you're an idiot.
Why didn’t school staff search the backpack, why didn’t the school insist on him leaving? Why didn’t the school notify the SRO about the threatening drawing? Looks like a lot of adults dropped the ball.
80% of teens are experiencing emotional mental health issues, YOU DON'T GIVE FIREARMS TO TROUBLED KIDS, and if you give a firearm to a teen YOU BETTER BE AT A TARGET RANGE. Yes! I just said that to my husband, I hope the parents suffer greatly and lose everything. They made horrible, unfathomable decisions and now they must pay. I live 20 minutes from this high school in Michigan and the pain caused by these murders is unbearable.
I'm willing to bet that a good part of Ethan's "emotional health issues" STEM directly from having belligerent, defensive, thoroughly nasty people for parents. They didn't go "off track"; this was EXACTLY the track they laid down for their kid. They were just too stupid to see where that track would lead.

School Resource Officer ??? WTF??.. why didn't' he search this kid's backpack that morning.??? Kid should have been SUPSENDED that morning .. and set with mandatory backpack inspections when he returned.
The way the prosecutor made it sound was that the parents refused to take him from the school. What can they do to with a minor if the parents to take him off school grounds?
Shooter should have been searched and escorted out of building by local police and transferred to psych center for observation. Parental permission not required. Public safety.
This kid should have been offered help and support many years ago before he ever even contemplated becoming a shooter. The bullies helping to destroy his mental health should also have been offered the same help.
I think the kid is an undiagnosed schizophrenic. In one of his notes he wrote "the voices won't stop". I don't think the parents considered this along with the school. So, I agree he should have a proper psych evaluation immediately. I'm not so sure his parents have a "full deck" either.
Non! I'd say the "MAGAT parents" are an accessory to the fact of premeditated murder. They knew the Son had taken the gun and knew what the school was telling them, and giving him the gun etc. This charge against them will have to be much higher as they had facilitated their Son in all of this.

Why were the parents allowed to leave the school without him? He should have had an IMMEDIATE psychiatric evaluation before he was allowed back in school. If the school said he couldn't stay and the parents left without him anyway then the police and child services should have been called. I know hindsight is 20/20......but we parents are counting on school staff and administration to DO BETTER than this.
Yeah, I can't wrap my head around that one. I went to school with a kid that had a notebook full of crazy drawings, and it was discovered by a teacher. And one of them involved his least favorite teachers being thrown out of a plane into a pit of alligators. He was suspended for a week. How in the world this school gave the CHOICE to his parents to let him stay or go is beyond me...
I agree. But it was Hopkins who misled the parents into thinking Ethan was suicidal not homicidal and only recommended therapy. If Hopkins had properly assessed him, Ethan would've been hospitalized immediately before ruining everyone's lives including his own.

Great statements, I love how she was honest and did not just give straight political answers. that takes a lot of power and guts especially in this job
I’m a firm supporter of the 2nd amendment. That said, in the interest of preserving the 2nd amendment, we should have zero tolerance for the misuse or negligence of handling/storing of firearms. With rights and freedom comes responsibility. Also, the school was negligent. In addition, the use of social media by minors is currently contributing to nationwide civil unrest, violence and hate. We as a society need to address this problem.
The bigger problem here as I see it, that after Sandy Hook, when basically every effort to stop the unhindered expansion of guns in our country... was blocked by a minority of law makers... Then we are at the point of not being able to have a rational discussion about guns and the roll they play. Dealing with the actions of the parents and the schools are important, but they pale in comparison with the work needed to actually mitigating future events. There is a tsunami of guns out there and it is still growing. There are straight-forward rational things that can be done to mitigate, such as - around 90% of guns used in crime can be traced to < 5% of gun dealers. The ATF needs the power to shut them down. - Expanding background check consistency and more detail as an example make sure that people on the no fly list (terrorist watch list) aren't able to purchase guns - Gun buyback programs aren't perfect but they would decrease some of the ~400M guns out there. - Focus more consistently on bellwether signs such as domestic abuse
I have two thoughts: 1. Throw the book at the parents. Every charge possible. 2. We ALL have to do better at seeing people who are struggling mentally. We need to care more, help more, intervene more. Because clearly, some parents aren’t fulfilling their responsibilities.
Tragic thing here is that the school saw it, and then failed to protect their students in any meaningful way. At the very least, they should have had an aide in the student's presence until the end of the school day when all the other students had left campus.
Will the State now investigate every shooting to see who dropped the ball, bet that they wont because there's too many POC doing the shootins, they're killing eachother like barnflies, and there's no way the State is going after the parents of Black/POC Shooters....or the judges/courts that let them out on *no cash bail.* This "story" has DS fukery written all over it.
I can't believe his locker and backpack were not searched and most of all that the Sherriff resource officer was not involved as soon as a weapon was mentioned in the drawing. Also I believe all firearm owners should have to a gun safe to store all firearms in before being allowed to purchase them.
Hmmm… in this case I agreee that gun owners should practice safe storage but can’t make it a requirement to purchase a safe. How do you verify that..? Michigan doesn’t have those laws in place so there are not legally required. You can’t restrict every Americans right to exercise their God given right by having to add a extra barrier of entry like purchasing a safe… that’s is just un-American. You can’t create barriers that so egregiously restrict the exercise law biding citizens rights.

The school meant no harm, but they inadvertently participated in questionable protocol; as questionable as the Crumbley's parenting!

It surprises me that schools can send kids suspected of having Covid home but not kids that may be carrying a gun to school and clearly in a poor mental state. This tragedy could have been averted.
Did you just go there? The parents refused to take the child home. Were they supposed to suspend him for drawing a couple pictures that are in frames by the millions on their video games? Lots of kids draw those kinds of pictures. How amazing that they actually saw something else but only then had the proof to reach out to his parents. They cannot put a child on the sidewalk nor do they want to. Not only do our schools that are government agencies with public officials that we elect co-parent with us but 99% of the day when that child is there they are their parent. By the way, can you imagine the lyrics those teachers have to listen to in the Halls in the school yards? Once again I applaud them for being able to pick that needle out of a haystack and call his parents to help out.
Maybe parents should take notice by paying more attention to their kids. About time parents are being held accountable. A lot of these shootings start with the parents not keeping closer eye on what there kids are doing.

Very glad to see this. Parents have the responsibility of protecting the community from anyone in their household getting ahold of guns and ammunitions that they allow in their homes. If they don't secure their weapons and their family members or others are injured because of their negligence, then yes, they should be held accountable. This sends a strong message to the entire nation that if you allow weapons in your home and don't properly secure them, and those weapons end up being used to harm others, you will be held accountable. Obviously the shooter is 100% responsible for what he did. I believe the parents are responsible, too, but does the school administration have no responsibility for this?? I mean, the parents didn’t want to take him home that day? Too bad, suspend him… IMMEDIATELY. The teacher did his/her part and the administration tried to but they fell short and it had deadly consequences. Allowing this kid back to class is just mind blowing to me.
Wow the whole family is going to jail. Well she’s right with gun ownership comes responsibly. One of the reasons I don’t own any hand guns and my hunting rifle and shotgun are locked in a safe behind a locked door. Unfortunately I don’t think the charges will stick to the parents as the prosecutor said there is no requirement for safe storage. Come on if you’re gonna have guns lock them up regardless. I really would like to know since the parents didn’t check his backpack before he returned to class (after seeing those pictures) why didn’t the school authorities check before returning him to class. I hope some more charges are coming.
This is not about guns, but the people who have access to them. This is about mental health, and not only in respect to the kid, but also to the parents. Irresponsible to allow a gun in the hands of a young, disturbed kid.

Stronger training program so people understand gun lock. Mental health program to help reduce hatred and bitterness. Transforming America’s gun culture. There is a lot more. I appreciate the prosecutor standing up for gun rights from the beginning but immediately warning that a price will be paid for those that aren’t responsible.
Who would even think about the shooter being their kid unless they knew it was a possibility. Especially after being called into school that morning due to the violent drawing found on his desk. Did they even think to go home and see if the gun was missing right after that meeting? They only reported the gun missing only after news came out about an active shooter.
These are such obvious questions, I have an obvious question for you. how come you’re not asking if the school officials asked his parents if they had any guns at home and if the kid had access to them?
I would like to know what happened at the meetings that took place on Monday and Tuesday. I am surprised that after meeting with the parents on Tuesday that he was allowed to stay in school
This needs to be a new precedent. If your kid grabs a gun from your bedside table and kills someone with it, YOU go to jail with him. Why didn't they take him to have a psychiatric review at the hospital instead of being turned to class if the prosecuting attorney thought he was so bad
The community "parents" want to know what the first meeting with the boy was about to warrant a second meeting with him and his parents. If these meetings warranted contacting the sheriff over his or others actions and the school said nothing "see something say something", the school bears some responsibility for not contacting the OCSD over his actions that prompted the first meeting with the child. Why is it the school, nor the sheriffs dept doesnt want to talk about what these meetings were about and refer to it as "finger pointing" at the school? Tell us what it was about so we can find out now rather than later because it comes off looking like a cover up.
She said what the first meeting was about - he was caught surfing online to buy ammo. Pay attention. Why didn't the cops know? The police are not welcome in every discussion with children and may only attend meetings that they have been asked to attend. Stop inventing issues based on a fantasy reality as if you were born yesterday.
And as the sheriff and DA have both said - not all questions have answers for the public, the investigation is ongoing. You want answers that can compromise the investigation or the case being built? As a 2A supporter, responsible gun owner, and father of three, I agree with the prosecutor about charging the parents, and they should add attempted murder for those injured. I would think that felony murder would apply here, because the straw purchase and criminal negligence would have the parents in line for other felonies that the child committed. I live in a state with fresh "safe storage" laws, however, I safely stored my firearms long before any laws that legislate common sense and courtesy. My heart aches for all affected by this tragedy, especially since it was very preventable at many points.
@@Lawperson97 In this case probably none. I was simply reacting to the broad statement that all forms of murder require intent. It doesn't really matter what they call it, "felony murder" or "being along for a felony ride" - you still face horrendous penalties (as those dudes in Georgia are about to discover).
2A is for responsible gun owners, not for negligent idiots. I grew up with a Glock in the house and had no idea it was ever there until I was grown and out of the house. I never saw ammo, a lockbox, or a gun. My parents never mentioned it. But after I moved out, my parents suggested that I go to a range and have a gun at home for protection. I was stunned that they never mentioned it before, but they told me it was because they didn’t even want to have the possibility that I might find it and hurt myself accidentally, so they secured it in a lockbox, put it in their bedroom closet, and never spoke about it to me. After events like this shooting, I respect my parents even more for their choice.
My step-dad had a whole gun safe in our basement that my brothers and I never knew about until we moved out. I fully understand why people want guns in their home for protection and I support the second ammendment 100%, but I completely agree with you.
the staff had fear and failed to search and intercept the weapon. he should of never had gone back to class. he should of been dismissed for the day. go home and cool off. the staff at the school are also responsible they also have blood on there hands..
Why is there no accountability on the School? If you're going to charge the parents for negligence then you should be charging the principle aswell for allowing the kid back into class after their were so many signs that this could have been prevented. At the very least why wasn't his backpack searched after seeing these drawings? Its the schools job to protect our kids from these types of tragedies and they failed miserably. Not only that, why aren't schools forced to have metal detectors? Come on. How many more school shootings do we need before we finally wake up?!
Look up something called the Promise Program. It was started by Obama and Eric Holder. It basically gave schools money for not expelling or suspending students who were disciplined cases. Obama and holder believe that too many minorities were being expelled from school and that put them on a fast track to prison. So they incentivized school districts not to expel or suspend the kids who were always in trouble. Of course it had to apply to all students, not just minorities. The school in Parkland Florida was part of that program. The school district ignored all the red flags about that kid that did the shooting there because if they expelled him they would get less money.
It’s all about responsibility. I don’t own a gun but am looking to buy one to protect my family but the first thing that comes to mind is what to buy in order to keep it in a locked area that only I can access. Keeping guns unlocked with kids in the house is just straight irresponsible and especially with teenagers smh. I feel for the families in this case its heartbreaking.
As a school administrator, how are you NOT going to check his backpack or ask about a gun??? 🤦🏻♂️
THANK YOU!
Did the school know about the gun? This is on the parents.
I know! It blows a person's mind. I don't think some of these administrators want to actually do their job.

Also, the school was negligent.
In addition, the use of social media by minors is currently contributing to nationwide civil unrest, violence and hate. We as a society need to address this problem.
Absolutely agree, as a concealed carrier, and rifle owners.. even our kids Bebe guns are locked .. because of kids that visit us!!
There was no law there requiring them to lock up the gun
Fox news and rightwing media spreads hate.
This is one of the most reasonable comments I’ve read coming from gun advocates.
There are straight-forward rational things that can be done to mitigate, such as
- around 90% of guns used in crime can be traced to < 5% of gun dealers. The ATF needs the power to shut them down.
- Expanding background check consistency and more detail as an example make sure that people on the no fly list (terrorist watch list) aren't able to purchase guns
- Gun buyback programs aren't perfect but they would decrease some of the ~400M guns out there.
- Focus more consistently on bellwether signs such as domestic abuse
I have two thoughts:
1. Throw the book at the parents. Every charge possible.
2. We ALL have to do better at seeing people who are struggling mentally. We need to care more, help more, intervene more. Because clearly, some parents aren’t fulfilling their responsibilities.
4 counts of manslaughter
Well said
Tragic thing here is that the school saw it, and then failed to protect their students in any meaningful way. At the very least, they should have had an aide in the student's presence until the end of the school day when all the other students had left campus.
3. License to be a parent. This kid was in deep from the moment he was conceived (or born).
Will the State now investigate every shooting to see who dropped the ball, bet that they wont because there's too many POC doing the shootins, they're killing eachother like barnflies, and there's no way the State is going after the parents of Black/POC Shooters....or the judges/courts that let them out on *no cash bail.*

@@teenyverse7707 They saw him searching up bullets the day before. That's a RED FLAG.... wow, of course they was not aware, the point is to GET AWARE,, Figure it out, do due diligence. RED FLAG " Let's check the bag JUST INCASE he actually have one because WE (The School) SAW him searching up bullets YESTERDAY, and now (a day later) he's drawing pictures of A GUN and SHOOTING SOMEONE. But go ahead and direct all the blame on one because you fail to see both sides. Blinded by your anger against the parents. Both failed. It's a list of things both could have done. To try to weight out who list is worest is redundant because both list could have prevented this tragic event.
To fix a problem you have to admit/address the problem. If the parents roles are addressed, so should the schools, so better procedures can be put into place on both sides.

More parent need to held accountable for their kids actions. 15 year olds on their own 9:00 pm 6:00 am, are out killing, assaulting people and nothing happens to the parents. Parents let and give excuses for their kids bullying others. The parents fail to put a stop to it. The courts do nothing to hold the parents accountable. The same goes for the mandatory reporters for the most part. That needs to change.
Well, the school is gonna get sued to high heaven
They need to pay for all these funerals
And we the tax payers will pay for it
The tragedy is it could have so easily been prevented it's mind boggeling
Parents should get the maximum sentence allowed by law, for their disturbed son's actions. Accountability! When they are found guilty at a trial, I hope they can be sentenced to 4 consecutive terms apiece.
The school should have told to police to bring him to the hospital for a psychiatric hold

This kid obviously had some issues, why in the world would these parents want him to have a deadly weapon?
Both parents UNDER THE JAIL...its almost like they planned it with him
They should treat it as such
He sounded suicidal and may have needed to be 5150 . Those parents… UGH! NO lockbox The kid was needing immediate help and those parents ignored it. For how many years did they ignore this kids state of mind.
Total incompetence on behalf of the "parents" and the school officials who didn't search his freaking backpack during the meeting earlier. There will be big fines, settlements and jail time for this tragedy! 😡
Sounds to me like Oakland county has a very thoughtful and caring prosecutor. Throughout this I've been impressed with her and the rest of their law enforcement officials. This is what good law enforcement looks like. Now it's up to a jury of thrir peers. I support the 2nd amendment. But at the same time when you bring a gun into a home with kids it's up to you to take precautions. Unthinkable things happen everyday. This could just as easily have ended with their child taking his own life. Just so sad.
One look at the kid and it was clear something was wrong with him. Why the parents purchased a gun for him is what I dont understand.
The prosecutor seems very relatable and like she truly wants justice for the victims and their families, as well as the community.
School administrators were grossly negligent
The parents were even more negligent.
No doubt the parents were more negligent
This is not about guns, but the people who have access to them. This is about mental health, and not only in respect to the kid, but also to the parents. Irresponsible to allow a gun in the hands of a young, disturbed kid.
Naw we need more stricter gun laws
They didnt ALLOW a gin in this hands...this prosecutor said it was in the night stand drawer in this parents room which how most people would keep a gin for home defense. The problems usual is mental health and the failure to deal with it. Based on some texts it eems that mother may have been a lousy parents but that is not criminal
@@nozakikun6760 I mean we have a pretty strict law about killing but it doesn’t stop anyone from killing. 👀
I agree we need better gun control but idk if stricter gun law is the only answer. There is keeping the gun sellers accountable to do background check. Proper and thorough profile for each individual so background check information is accurate. Stronger training program so people understand gun lock. Mental health program to help reduce hatred and bitterness. Transforming America’s gun culture. There is a lot more. Gun law is probably the hardest one to do since the house and senate never freaking agree on this when they vote. 🤨
@@zmanzoran a gin? you have to be 21 to drink in America.

Thank you Ms McDonald. Hopefully this is the answer to this horrible deed and all those who are thinking of committing the same thing. If you can't think of your fellow students, maybe the thought of your mom or dad in prison will keep you from following through. As it is, the gun is the weapon, the accountability needs to come from someone, let it be the parents.
Unfortunately, it won't be. No more than capital punishment being a deterrent - Texas kills more people each year than all states with CP combined, yet they continue to have more to kill. Criminals will always commit crime no matter the possible sentence and disturbed teenagers are going to continue to shoot up schools as long as mental health remains a non-issue in these types of crimes.
These parents are disgusting! "Don't get caught" ???!!!???
With this overwhelming traumatic unexplainable episode in Michigan, Oakland County 🏫 region, do not expect my children to go back in person. I got no option but have desided to keep my children ONLINE; for the peace of mind of everyone at home and for them to be able to learn having no fear. I'm devastated. This is just incredible!
We need more prosecutors like this
Seems like the school was "handed" evidence to forward onto the police to prevent this but instead took it slowly yet not methodically through the hoops... maybe if they overreacted it might've helped
Right! Sometimes it helps to be a little demonstrative and over cautious in these situations aye?!
@@zacharytowey6989 you'd think right?
I agree 100% with the prosecutor. Go after those parents and the school. Props to the teacher that notified right away to school officials about the note.
I appreciate the prosecutor standing up for gun rights from the beginning but immediately warning that a price will be paid for those that aren’t responsible.
I hope your kid never drink drives! That will be next
Who would even think about the shooter being their kid unless they knew it was a possibility. Especially after being called into school that morning due to the violent drawing found on his desk. Did they even think to go home and see if the gun was missing right after that meeting? They only reported the gun missing only after news came out about an active shooter.
These are such obvious questions, I have an obvious question for you. how come you’re not asking if the school officials asked his parents if they had any guns at home and if the kid had access to them?
the parents are a couple of morons
When daddy and mommy are more concerned about being their children's friends instead of their parent. Heaven forbid my child hears the word "no".
Bet you’d see people actually taking more accountability with their guns and not treating them like toys.
If you’re too negligent to own a gun then down own a gun. People have a right to live.
Parents that are caught hosting a party at their home with full knowledge alcohol is being served to minors are held accountable by law, I commend Karen for her placing these charges on the parents of this shooter. Hopefully it becomes LAW.

The school Administrator should have sent the kid home with his parents, the parents should never have given their 15-year-old a handgun.
"Woulda, shoulda, coulda does not bring the murdered children back or heal the injured. So sad.
The school told parents they had 48 hours to get him into counseling but let the parents leave him in the school? That's just wrong he should have left with them.
Thank you Mrs. Mcdonald for charging these woefully negligent parents! I believe this will set a precendent for situations like this to come. This may even be what is needed to stop them once and for all.
Why didn't they take him to have a psychiatric review at the hospital instead of being turned to class if the prosecuting attorney thought he was so bad
Who buys a 15 year old a handgun? Get him a bolt action and keep it under lock and key
Blaming the parents, and not the firearm. I can respect this.
Should've arrested them first, then held a news conference
The community "parents" want to know what the first meeting with the boy was about to warrant a second meeting with him and his parents. If these meetings warranted contacting the sheriff over his or others actions and the school said nothing "see something say something", the school bears some responsibility for not contacting the OCSD over his actions that prompted the first meeting with the child. Why is it the school, nor the sheriffs dept doesnt want to talk about what these meetings were about and refer to it as "finger pointing" at the school? Tell us what it was about so we can find out now rather than later because it comes off looking like a cover up.
That’s because it is a cover-up. She did everything but use the words I’ll circle back with you on that.
She said what the first meeting was about - he was caught surfing online to buy ammo. Pay attention. Why didn't the cops know? As a 2A supporter, responsible gun owner, and father of three, I agree with the prosecutor about charging the parents, and they should add attempted murder for those injured.
I would think that felony murder would apply here, because the straw purchase and criminal negligence would have the parents in line for other felonies that the child committed.
I live in a state with fresh "safe storage" laws, however, I safely stored my firearms long before any laws that legislate common sense and courtesy.
My heart aches for all affected by this tragedy, especially since it was very preventable at many points.
Murder requires intent
@@Lawperson97 Not felony murder
@@farmerbrown84 what was the underlying felony
@@Lawperson97 In this case probably none. I was simply reacting to the broad statement that all forms of murder require intent. It doesn't really matter what they call it, "felony murder" or "being along for a felony ride" - you still face horrendous penalties (as those dudes in Georgia are about to discover).
Maybe now parents will start parenting vs coddling.
You can tell how sick the prosecutor feels even simply repeating the parent’s words. Disgusting.
Karen makes me sick. She's corrupt and using the parents as scape goats for negligent Oxford High staff!
the staff had fear and failed to search and intercept the weapon. he should of never had gone back to class. he should of been dismissed for the day. go home and cool off. the staff at the school are also responsible they also have blood on there hands..
This would’ve never happened if the school followed protocol.
Damn she's fine... throw the book at em baby
