Making a Rocking Bassinet

- This rocking bassinet is made of white oak and has walnut spindles. The bassinet is 28" tall, 34" long (the rockers have a length of 44"), and 18" wide; it snuggly accommodates a 32" x 16" bassinet mattress. If you have any questions, please leave them in the comments! Thanks for watching!

Make sure put your name and date it. My grandpa made me a bassinet and after he was gone it felt so special to see his handwriting on the underside of it. It feels like an incredibly tangible connection I still get to have with him now
I definitely will. There isn't a great place to brand it so I need to think about it some more. Maybe I'll wood burn my name and the date, like you've suggested.

Thank you Barbara! It's the dowelmax and I would buy it again. It's really solid and easy to use. I can think of very few instances where it can't be used efficiently and I have yet to run into those instances. Thanks again for your kind words!

you could have just clamped a piece of wood to the side of the runner to insure the rocker feet stayed flush rather than put the hole piece on its side..brilliant job mate.

What is the doweling jig/kit you are using?
Thanks! Blending some of those joints was the mod tedious part of the build. The jig is the dowelmax classic.
That dowelmax classic is EXPENSIVE! I just googled it 😛, it does look like a good system though.
First of all, congrats!! The bassinet is really beautiful but maybe a little short for you, you will have to bend your back too much. (yes, I did the same)
Thank you Alberto! That's a good point. I made it relatively short for two reasons. First, I didn't want it to be able to tip over; its not very wide and I figured the lower the center of gravity, the better. And second, I wanted it to be relatively close to the level of our own bed. Also, my wife is short so this works out better for her. :)

Great work man! Building the crib was one of my more nerve-wracking projects, since I wanted to make sure everything was super strong and well sanded. Your bassinet turned out great. EDIT: Also, you're halfway to a #johnnysquat there at the end :)

Hi Justin. Shoot me an email at parillaworks@gmail.com and I can send you my CAD drawing; that's the only format I have all of the dimensions in. On a more general note, I started with the mattress (16" x 32") and worked out from there. I wanted it to be relatively low so it would tip. You could also make it rock the other direction, some people prefer that. If you can't get the CAD drawing open, I would be happy to list out some of the critical dimensions.

Most babies do better being rocked left to right. Not head to toe. They tend to vomit if they are rocked head to toe. I have raised my own children and know this.
That was mentioned a few times when I first made this bassinet. In actual use, we didn't rock it much at all. Our daughter quickly outgrew it anyway. We just had a baby boy the other week and he seems to like it! Again, not much rocking being done.
Lol, the tape thing got me. Is there anything worse in this world then having that satisfying moment ruined?
Almost scrapped the whole project right then and there.

How do you decide which direction for it to rock? Side to side or front to back?
I didn’t find any standards or regulations when it came to bassinets so I went based off perceived convenience. I felt having a front to back rock would allow us to bring the bassinet closer to the bed and still be usable. That said, I’ve had multiple people comment saying a front to back rock isn’t as good for the baby. Our second baby just got done with it and I didn’t seem to notice any issues, other than them outgrowing it too fast 😛

Just a question, isnt rocking in wrong direction or is that just the video playing tricks on my eyes?
I couldn't find an industry standard for which way these things should rock. There are commercially available bassinets that go either way. I would say the other direction is probably more common, though.
I indeed found some more rocking back and forth in a quick google search and no industrie standard. The only reference i have is from my sailing days. If we would overnicht on the schip I coun't sleep if a motion that put my head lower then my toes, or below level for the matter. I still look for this when I look for a campingspot, sleeping with my head down gives me alsorts of problems. And before you think I just leave my kid level it doenst move, mine youngest is about 6 weeks old and moves in small stept all over the place.

Thank you. I learned that there isn't really a standard bassinet mattress. There are range of sizes all close to one another. The mattress I used was 16" x 32".

What a beautiful piece you have created that will be enjoyed for many years. I am wondering why you put the runners in that orientation. Cradles almost exclusively have them perpendicular to that.
Thank you! I figured having the rockers run the length of the piece would let us bring the bassinet closer to our bed and still rock nicely. I've seen various commercial bassinets that rock this way so it didn't concern me too much.

Nice work and congratulations by now your baby is a few months old I guess. Hope she likes it. Never thought of rocking head to toe. I have seen several old ones that rock side to side insted. How does the baby like it? Can definitely see the Malof insperation on the blending of the joints like it grew that way. I am sure you have created an heirloom.
Thanks Roland! Baby is doing well, she's about 2.5 months old now...time flies! There aren't many standards and regulations for bassinets so I went based off different ones I saw in stores. Most rock from side to side but there are some the rock head to toe. I chose the latter because we would be able to scoot it up next to our bed closely without interfering with the rocking. To be honest, we didn't rock it that often but the rockers did make it easy to slide around the house when necessary. She grew out of it pretty quickly, mostly because she likes to swing her arms and feet a lot. She kept hitting the spindles and waking up. All that said, I'm still happy with how it turned out and look forward to seeing it used in the future.

First - LOVE the look and feel of this design. Second - Low sides not too practical for more than 6 mo to a year. (I was climbing out of my 4 foot high sides in 7 months.) Third - Front to back rather than side to side rocking is interesting... May not be liked by the child as unnatural. And Fourth - encourages the child to go to the ends where they're closer to the floor and the sides are closer as leverage... But it is beautiful.
Hi Clyde! Thanks for your comment! To a few of your points, we plan on moving her to the crib once she starts moving. That may be a short time but I knew that going into this build. As far as the rocking motion, I didn't find any industry standard and have heard both work fine. I guess it all depends on what the baby ends up liking. Thanks again for your thoughts :)
we had a folding, store-bought bassinet that rocked in the same direction as the (much more) beautiful one you have built here. it worked great for both of our sons. this should work fine. that's a great looking example of great skill. keep it up! and congrats!
