Welding on Generator Power | Predator 9000

  • Chris and I bought a Predator 9000-Watt [7250-Watt running/continuous] generator from Harbor Freight to run our welding rigs while at the units and remote sites. Sadly, I won't really get the chance to use the genny too much since I have power at my new place. However, it will come in handy on those remote projects for sure.
At the time of this video, the generator can be had for $649 or ~$519 with 20% coupon before applicable taxes. Bear in mind that you will need oil, a starter battery (optional), and obviously fuel. Harbor Freight also sells a cool wheel and handle attachment that makes the generator more mobile if you need that option.
The generator ran the welder without breaking a sweat. Yeah, the video was not scientific in the least bit, nor did we max out the duty cycle/loading. However, it was nice to see it perform so well on material that we're already used to welding.
It's not as heavy as I originally imagined, but is still a two-person job without the wheel and handle kit. Also, I was incredibly surprised by how "quiet" it was during idle and loaded operation. It's certainly not the quietest unit out there, but it's not hard to work right next to it without ear pro.
**This video is NOT sponsored in any way by any manufacturer.**

So you got the 9000 starting watts. Lol I've been looking at older genrac 15000 watts. Tried a champion 9375/7500. Probably should have never sold that one but wanted a hobart champion 145. It stick welds awesome but doesn't run my multiprocess that well since it's only 4500 and 20 amp

@@_dirtyfab3710 CARB is for California. I live in Texas, so I bought the EPA III version. We don't have the CARB versions stocked here as far as I know. You will most likely only find one version at your local Harbor Freight. I would imagine that California is the only place that stocks the CARB compliant units because it's the only state that requires it. From what I have read, they are both the same performance wise.

Bigdaddy Mac the generator is with my friend out of town right now. However, I have used it for both my 211 MIG and 200 TIG running max settings and it powers them just fine. I didn’t notice a lack of weldability or penetration. I probably would get a diesel or larger gas generator if you’re going to be at those amps for extended periods of time, or if your typical workload requires those kinds of amps consistently.

Inner Sanctum this helped alot and thankypu for such a fast response, i would most likely need 110 to mabie 130 amps for small jobs sites , the stick welding settings will allow me to dial that in but the flux/mig/ or spoolgun settings only allow me to set voltage an wirespeed an desides the amps needed its self but also its a inverter type welder so that may help me out some as well, but over all I believe this was really great an useful information. Thanks bunches🤟🔥

@@CinematicMajor223 I have a video on my channel of a smaller generator running my old transformer based stick welder. I also use that generator to run mig in some of the amish shops around here. I also have the Lincoln 180 you see in this guys video. I've been running it with .030 wire on the highest volt setting and around 9 on the wire speed. I don't know what that equates to in terms of actual numbers but I've ran the welder so hard it overheated on me twice one day. the generator doesn't care. it just gives it power. If I had a bigger welder it would just keep giving it power all day long. I've built something that required about 4 pounds of 7018 welds. and some grinding. I ran all that rod in about 3 hours. again the generator don't care. and mine is only 6.8k continuous watts.

It works well for the work I do in the 40 to 80 amp DC range. • @russblakney

Just a FYI, don’t buy a generator with less than 7000 running watts. An old boss of mine cheaped out and got the 6500/5500 Predator. Using an inverter stick welder was a pain in the a$$. The generator would bog down and you’d have some fluctuations. It could do 7018 3/32 rods but hard to keep a consistent bead. So in some cases the rod wouldn’t stay going, in others it would go the opposite way and throw out too much power and end up burning through thinner metal. He had a larger one with 12,500 running watts and it worked great. I’ve used what I’m guessing is the older model of the one in the video that was I think 8750/7000 and it worked fine. I have a Westinghouse with 12,500/9500 running amps and it works great with stick and mig, haven’t done tig on it.

Daniel Mendez Yeah, these little generators definitely do the trick. The price was especially easy on the wallet. I can confirm our Predator is more than adequate for my TIG and MIG setup even on thicker aluminum where more juice is required. We were able to TIG ~1/4” aluminum without any issue whatsoever. Only thing that comes to mind for those specific welders is that they have a pesky little switch on the back of them that you have to toggle between 120v and 240v input voltage. Make sure the switch is set to 240v. Also, make sure the generator circuit breakers are reset. Other than that, I don't know what could be the issue. Hope you figure it out though. Cheers!

That’s not entirely true. Heavily welder manufacture/PCB dependent in that case. I do agree that distortion should be below 5% though as a good reference.
However, I bought this generator after researching it pretty well. Looks like any of the newer Predator Inverter generators are running “pure sine wave” (according to their advert), and the tests I have seen on their waveforms has shown these types of generators to produce relatively clean sine waves around 60hz at ~120v with a deviation of 1-2hz under heavy load with a small voltage drop.
There are several videos on UA-cam illustrating wave forms off Predator generators. Are they perfect? No. Cleaner than plugging into the wall? No. Good enough in a pinch? Absolutely!

However, what people are referring to is sine vs square wave form. In the past, on transformer and earlier inverter machines this would have been detrimental to their long-term durability. These older machine's weren't as advanced internally and were very picky on what kind of power they'd run off of.
Now, inverter welders have taken over the entire market, and they are incredibly advanced inside. Much more robust than before and are not as picky when it comes to power. Pretty much all inverter machines today have multi-power functionality and have zero issue switching from wall power to generator power.
Manufacturers know their markets. They know people don't have access to 220v all the time. So they made dual voltage machines that can run off 120v [110v] and 240v [220v]. Same goes for clean vs dirty power. They know people are using the welders remotely in some cases. Not everyone can afford a welder gen unit. So they made sure the electronics can easily handle whatever power is available.
Both my Miller and Everlast have been run off generator power and wall power for years. Not a single issue from either of them.

@@Inner_Sanctum Man, I am sincerely grateful that you took the time to share your experience in such a thoughtful and thorough response. Def gonna subscribe, but don’t worry, I don’t usually ask so many questions ;) Good point about calling the manufacturer, I’ll do that to be safe. It’s awesome to hear your firsthand experience though in terms of using these tools and not having any side effects so far. I’m just trying to get more mobile with my setup and unlock some additional earning potential without breaking the bank too hard. If I can get a few years of use out of my Lincoln pro mig 180 off the predator 9000 then I’d consider it a success. Thanks again, look forward to watching some more of your content 👍

I’m looking to power my everlasting 210stl powerarc, it’s a stick/tig welder, off of a generator. I keep tripping circuit breakers in my house so I need a good generator, atleast 10,000peak watts. It’s an inverter welder so the manual says I need

Made it myself. I have a video showing how to make one for the wall. It's essentially the same thing for the generator. The only difference is the plug.

Ok so i got the generator and it runs off 120v great but i cant seem to get the 220v adapter ive made to push 220 without kicking a fault on my welder even at the same amps that it was running on 120v . Please help. I need to know the wiring -size of wire. Type of wire 3 or 4 strand exc i know this generator will go up to 175 watts the generator will indeed push it but my vulcan omnipro keeps saying high or low voltage

you may have wired it wrong. I'm pretty sure on mine the 2 hots and one ground go to the plug in for the welder. I forget what size wire I use. I can check later but I run a 100 foot cord no problem.
