Cream is better.
No three piece rock group has ever sounded as full as Rush can live. All of the multitasking these guys do, and do it for a three hour show! They’re just amazing to see live, though it is very difficult to know who to watch. It is amazing that they can play multiple instruments, playing pedal keyboards with their feet while still playing some of the most complex riffs on their main instruments. No other group has their work ethic or works harder to deliver a near perfect musical performance live and that alone should win them the top spot. Good job Watch Mojo!
ELP has such a bigger and more full wall of sound than Rush does. I am obviously biased here, but still.

Mr George it’s mainly the keyboard that gives ELP the edge, in my humble opinion
They also play for four hours and never have openers. None of the other 3 pieces did that.
@@SplendidCoffee0 I agree, ELP were doing pioneering, sophisticated music in 1970 and Emerson was using the Moog synthesizer before anyone (no other keyboard player has ever used a Modular Moog in live shows, except Emerson) and writing very complex music with Quartal Harmony, odd meters, drawing on influences from 20th Century Classical music, like Bartok and Copeland. Plus Greg Lake had one of the greatest voices. All this years before Rush was even a band. Read my comment above.

Keith Emerson is a genius for the keyboards, one of the best.
Carl Palmer is an excellent drummer, and Greg Lake is a great vocalist, play the bass and guitar, and is an excellent composer.
ELP has a virtuosity musicians, and is better than practically all the bands here, except Rush.

The only thing I can think to keep Nirvana out of the top 3 would be length of run. Unfortunately Nirvana's was cut short, but I believe the fact they were iconic for a generation should boast them.

I was a huge Green Day fan when I was younger and they haven’t been a Power Trio in decades. They even feel the need to add extra guitars for songs they used to play as a trio. Rush never needed this, they were great enough to produce incredible sounds with only 3 men their whole career. RUSH FTW

RIP Neil Peart
Peart was the mastermind behind the band imo. He never was as public as the the other two, but he wrote all the songs and in my opinion, is the best drummer of all time because of his technical playing style.
I was getting sort of mad when Rush was not listed but then you put them as #1. It's about time that Rush got the acclaim they deserve. All three are masters of their craft.
Wish muse was higher on this list but that's just me.

I don't care, Rush has left a legacy unmatched by any trios other than Hendrix. They changed rock, but they simply did not last long enough, period. Rush lasted for 40 years with only one band replacement and that was after the first damn album. Oh, you want a list of who Rush has influenced? Primus, Tool, Dream Theater, Foo Fighters, Rage Against the Machine, Pantera, and Metallica all list Rush as having a heavy influence on their musical styles.

Led Floyd Idk I mean Rush is in the hollywood walk of fame,canadian walk of fame,rock and roll hall of fame and Canadian music hall of fame.They lasted over 40 years.They have sold 40 million records compared to cream's 15.They have the third highest streak of platinum selling albums (only beaten by the stones and Beatles and that's huge).If you don't agree with that,well musically Rush is more experimental and their music more complex,plus they are more versatile changing with the times.They are among the most talented trios (cream also but Geddy Lee plays the piano,bass and sings all by himself) with Geddy being considered one of the greatest bassist and praised for his vocals.Neil Peart is the considered the second best drummer of all time after Bonham.
But don't get me wrong I love cream (they are also in rnr hall of fame and have one of the greatest guitarist/bassist/drummer) but I think watchmojo got it right by putting Rush at number one.

Blue Cheer, Budgie, Grand Funk Railroad, James Gang, and Thin Lizzy
enfelice Yes they are all amazing but sadly all underrated and I guess will always be overshadowed by Green Day and Blink
Though Thin Lizzy started out as a trio their iconic sound was done as a four piece, first rock band 2 use double lead guitars and influenced bands like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden.
Back in the day GFR sold out stadiums faster than other bands incl the Beatles and where the only band to have Led Zep booed off the stage.
ZZ Top is so underrated they should be higher on the list
I think you also need to look at how influential each trio was. Jimi Hendrix did things that had never been done. His influence has lasted 50 years. Are You Experienced blew everything else away. Cream would be #2. They were also very influential as one of the first bands to really feature great instrumental talent.

The Police is way above any band in this list. They are god-tier fusing hard rock, punk rock, reggae, ska, jazz, classical music, pop in all their songs at popularized the music industry with their number 1 hits.

Because the Police are more influential, musically talented and bigger than Nirvana or JHE. Hendrix himself was a huge name, but his band isn't as big. Nirvana had their moment of fame, but the Police ruled the late 70's and early 80's.

No offense, but what universe do you live in? Nirvana, Cream and the Jimi Hendrix Experience make most lists of the greatest artists in popular music EVER. Not just specific lists like greatest rock bands or even greatest rock trio. Rush... not so much.
Rush is extremely overlooked and underrated in the Rock scene. For some reason they are only looked at in the specifics of the Rock trio scene. Not to say that any of your examples are bad, but certain names always get more attention. Like you said, the Jimi Hendrix Experience make many lists of music. In my opinion, Rush deserves to hold as big of a name as any of the former examples, but they don't. They're not thought of in that light; they have never been looked at by the mainstream as one of the greats.
You know what is amazing of trio bands? That they sound just as good as an entire Orchesta with just 3 members.

Lesser known, but nonetheless had their own kick-ass brand of rock and roll: ( In no particular order ): Beck , Bogert & Appice; Rory Gallagher; Brownsville Station; The James Gang, Mountain, and Robin Trower. I know Rory Gallagher was a quartet for part of the time, but he did a lot of great work in a trio....
"Taste" was trio. Motly they were based on "Cream" experience - even in their title. Which does not make them any worse

Him and Stewart Copeland were good friends and would sometimes jam together.
Trios are definetley some of the best! In big bands some members(Mostly bassists, and sometimes drummers) are sometimes forgotten but in trios eveybody gets the cred they deserve!:)
As a huge Rush fan, I decided to only watch #1, knowing it would be Rush, and then read the rage comments from Nirvana and Green Day fans. It was a good day.

I feel that rush and the police are tied for one, but in good taste it was rush. I'm not butt hurt or anything. It's interesting no one really mentions the police in the comments. But I think stings songwriting and Stewart copeland's(who is just as good as Neil peart IMO) along with Andyschops made some of the best and most interesting songs. Take message in a bottle(which has the best drumming I've ever heard). It's a song that anyone can listen to, it's a great. Or listen to the opening of Reggatta de Blanc, the rim clicks are off the fucking wall. But then there's songs like walking on the moon, or synchronicity 1 and synchronicity 2 which just rock but have real lyrical meaning. I could talk forever about how good copeland is, just as good as peart and maybe bonham. He never showed his kick drum speed except on a few songs, but what bonham did the for the bass drum copeland did for the hi hat. Parts of message in a bottle have intricate hi hat playing that's just amazing.

This is going WAY back, but Buddy Holly and the Crickets were a pretty decent trio in their day. It was mostly due to Buddy Holly. He essentially played rhythm and lead while singing lead.
Rush and Cream are easily the best power trios, no question.

The Police was the most gifted trio in my book and the most successful trio of all time. They made complicated great songs mainstream.

Police was great and I am a big fan of theirs but Rush was #1.
@@woolhat1 No man- Rush was a good band- they couldn’t match the talent that The Police had- Sting is master musician who showed the world that he can be successful without The Police- he created 4-5 albums that were masterpieces on his own. The fact that Sting was able to sell 75 million record on his own shows the dynamic talent of The Police. Rush was more of a cult following- The Police captured the world with intoxicating music and sound.
@@barmalgran666 Most of us pro musicians over the years basically feel that his bass playing was more like a prop in his hands. They were a really terrific band but musically there are bass, keyboards, guitar and percussion. Not exactly a three piece band. Stings solo music was played by top studio musicians. Equating money to talent level is like Milli Vanilli or Vanilla Ice as musical geniuses. I am good with your view except the money part. My other favorite three piece bands can't qualify although Morphine's fretless acoustic bass playing along with that haunting alto sax sound is great. No money there although MTV did give them exposure. Btw, I can play Sting's bass lines better than Geddy Lee's and struggle with playing pedals, bass and keyboards all at the same time. Sting should have done that for the keyboards that were in their songs.
Absolutely agree with the number 1 choice. Mind-blowing talents.
