This is the prettiest and most accurate spyro fan game I've seen and there are some GOOD ones out there.
@@charleybest4757 For sure. And based on the skyboxes I can’t wait to see the next levels!
The most accurate spyro fan games were Spring Savanna and Dream Nexus, which were shut down by activation
There are? I don't know of any fangames.
@@dark0ssx those two weren’t shut down by Activision for the record. They just went dark.
@@CrystalFissure They said they got a cease and desist didn't they?
These fan games make me wish I had the time to learn 3d modelling and programming to make my own levels
@@acedia3730 same tbh. I don’t have the time nowadays but it’s such a cool skill to have.
this is an open source project so you wouldnt have to program anything! just drag and drop items in the unreal engine editor
@@Bunbaroness Elaborate please
@@kaceywills8551 the google drive link contains the source project for unreal engine
I started doing that 10 years ago in order to make my own Crash Bandicoot game. But I was struggling with time management and I found it was an insane task, so I just quit and abandoned the project :( I regret it so much, I wish I learned Unreal Engine. I know a lot about 3D and CGI, but programming was just too much to wrap my head around
4:19 "Shoulda stuck to haiku, Bags." Lol, that's a great little reference to the end of Spyro 3

I can feel the polish of this update in terms of animation.

Me too. It’s really exciting to see a project this far.
Small lil detail at 9:50 but that's a black sheep, a lovely nod to the Spyro 2 Epilogue! She's doing such an amazing job with this game aaaaaggggghhh
@@CriticalofOnions such a great reference.
I hope this one doesn't get a Cease and Desist like the last one
This fan project epitomises how the very best of dreams one could have can and DO come true.
@@deadendwaterfall for sure. Hard work pays off.
7:54 that came so out of the blue I cackled 😂 it's so in line with Hunter's personality too, spare the joke content itself. This video just landed on my feed and I'm honestly so happy people are still working on projects like these. It's honestly amazing how far this work has come.
Lol deadass same
That bit reminded me of the "you reposted in the wrong realms" meme video made some years ago, it's not that hard to imagine Hunter saying that line for real😅
@@Wyattinous yeah the dialogue is so out of pocket, but in a good way.
Yes more spyro fan games I really hope this doesn't get canceled. I would love to play this fully finished
Awesome to see how far this game has come already! I've seen a lot of Spyro fan games, but getting that "feel" is an extraordinarily tough needle to thread. Really excited to see what they do next.
Hope your dad is doing better soon, I got the rona' back in the spring and it still sucks! Best wishes Nick!
@@performa9523 Thanks Alex! He’s definitely getting better. Coughing is definitely annoying for him though. And yeah, I’m very excited to see how it grows too.

@@tb3411 yeah I have a feeling the diary is gonna be a real highlight. And yes, honoured that I’m in the game in a small way hahaha
This fan game build is epic!!! Omg everything is amazing as it’s most related towards the Spyro classic games! Thanks for this update!
Thanks for watching Chris!
Almost 17 minutes of it!
Hopefully you dad recovers soon 😢

I love the dialogue 😂
Also best wishes to Nick 👍
"Shoulda stick to Haiku"
AHAHAHAHAH! The creator has a sense of humour I see. 🤣
She certainly does!
This is amazing. I was a huge fan of the original Spyro and Ripto's Rage on the PS1, growing up. I'd love to see this completed - especially with a bit of voice-acting, but I know that's probably pushing it. I just hope we get a completed game at some point. The PS1 aesthetic is amazing, and the remakes just kind of lost something.
Also glad to see Elora brought back, she was my favorite side-character in Ripto's Rage, and I am utterly mystified that she wasn't brought back in Year of the Dragon, Season of Ice, or Season of Flame. Elora seriously deserved better.
I hope new developers learn that supercharging is for exploration, not for breaking.
Most concepts are added in as proof of existence, not so much final level design.
??
it's always been about both. the first time you're introduced to supercharge in s1 is specifically to kill an enemy behind a wall you couldn't otherwise reach, not to mention the doors in haunted towers, the chest in tree tops, etc
@@lumilauraa
Part 2 and 3 wasted the supercharge feature
I know this Spyro Fan Game is going to be awesome when it releases sometime in the near future.
Agreed, MatthewKing!
When the fuck have people started modding this fucking game? This shit is amazing either way, I will definitely be keeping my eyes open for this bad boy right here when it gets finished.
Amazing!! I'm so excited. And best wishes Nick
I’m excited too!
The progress made in such a short time since the last build is amazing.
Very much so. But that’s in part because so much of the foundations were laid years ago. It’s easier to make these changes and amendments when the foundation is solid.
This looks amazing!!
Miss the good ol' Myths Awaken days, this one is looking great, although portals are looking so small, they should definitely be bigger. Hope this can be finished!
That's a really good job done there with the portals!
@@RubbberRabbbit2 from your own experience, is that something that was hard to do for your previous work? I’d imagine getting it to look smooth and be in the right perspective would be hard.
@@CrystalFissure It depends a little on the approach and which tools and functionality are available, but yes, it's something that would usually take me a few tries to get exactly right from scratch. I especially appreciate that she went with the full seamlessly animated transition where it'd be easy to do fadeouts and call it a day. Not sure if it's tackled yet here, but there's also making sure the sky's rotation/position aligns perfectly in the portal and in the target level - in Spyro 1, since the portal skies continuously rotate while you're in the homeworld, you can see it gradually align itself during the transition flight.
But just for the portal as you see it without entering, depending on the situation, you might need to (re)consider game rendering as a whole, or at the very least treat the portal rendering in a different way than most everything else being rendered. I think many intuitively would try to capture the view of the sky to a texture and then render the portal plane using that texture and getting some perspective trickery just right, whereas this looks like it's using the more appropriate approach of utilizing the stencil buffer. (Where the portal plane is invisibly rendered, basically tagging the pixels it covers with a specific value, and then the portal sky is rendered as if it belongs to the current level, but only affecting those tagged pixels.) Whereas in my old projects in GameMaker, which didn't have stencil buffer functionality, I would render a portal's sky before anything else, then the portal plane as a barely visible, translucent black, to mark it in the depth buffer before rendering the rest of the level, letting the portal plane's mark in the depth buffer cancel anything that would appear behind it. The PS1 games, on the other hand, I believe first compute which chunks of the sky would be visible through the portal, and then slice off unwanted parts of polygons before rendering them.
I appreciate the kind words! Portals were an absolute nightmare and if I could do it all over I'd do black fade transitions in a heartbeat but I do think they've turned out pretty good
@@RubbberRabbbit2 this actually is done using a texture and perspective trickery. I could never figure out how to pull off the portal effect with ue4's stencil buffer. This has the downside of being really expensive, though i do combat that by having the portals turn white and flashing when theyre far away like in the ps1 games, so it's never rendering too many portal surfaces at once. The performance seems to be alright for most people, and it can still run at about 400 fps on my computer, so i guess it's fine how it is? In principle, stencil butter would be better though
@Bunbaroness Oh, interesting! From the video I really couldn't tell, so great job figuring the perspective stuff out, that's kinda the most impressive to pull off so well since the other technique gives the result more or less for free if you know which "switches" to turn on and off! I'm completely unfamiliar with Unreal Engine, so I don't know what it's like to work with there.
This looks really good, I'll be sure to check it out when it releases. Personally, I would like to play the old demo of Spyro Myths Awaken. The previous version of sky citadel level looked so pretty.
Yeah that Myths Awaken demo was legendary.
Great video as always and best wishes to nick ❤️
I wish they still made Spyro games! I would buy it every year!
That's pretty cool game, played it through myself in about 15-20min and it looks solid. Controls were good overall but there's some weirdness with the movement speed, took me a couple tries to jump on those 4 pillars next to the spawn. Same thing with Hunter's gliding tutorial.
Graphics look great too, had to turn off pixelation as a first thing though and the PS1 warble got jarring 10 minutes in, otherwise no complaints.
There was couple things and some nice dialogue you missed in the video too.
YEEESSS YESSSS!!!!
Thanks!!!!
What are you saving your money for spyro, another sequal? The game looks so dope btw
@@razorfin699 definitely. And it will only continue to improve.

You can just feel the love that was put into the game 💜 does anybody know if there are any updates on the new official Spyro 4 game? Or if there's a potential Crash 5?
7:55 Honest, it feels like Hunter is asking for the same treatment that Moneybags received in Year of the Dragon at this point. He's probably thinking: Well its just a test

@@elloofficer we need the boatman build: NOW
I'm doing a hand drawn Shantae fan game and my own original indie game right now - if I had enough time, I would actually try to make an open source framework/engine for making Spyro fan games in either Godot or Unreal 4 and a 3D remake of Season of Ice's first hubworld and one of the levels as an example. Something along the lines of Unity Raider or Sonic Worlds since Spyro fan games tend to have same core gameplay loop and art direction as the original games, but original levels, textures, props, music, npcs and enemies with some new abilities on top of that.
this fangame is open source, you can download the source project

Yeah it ain’t working for me. Windows keeps blocking the Unreal Engine application. I swear it wasn’t even this hard to get the soundfonts!
They have to adjust the camera itself to the water levels so that we can't see inside and outside the walls.
@@OFFATHER13 yeah I’d imagine she’ll fix that later down the line.
The boatman will be voice by Keith Silverstein in a Swedish accent.
@@carlfuhrmann1146 lol love it
Next up, the Classical Spyro voice acting (:
This is looking phenomenal so far, and it's being developed at rapid pace which is very respectable!
I think the biggest thing at the moment is that the homeworld definitely needs a second pass. Right now it's feeling a lot like a test level, and could do with a bit more coherence/flow. Spyro levels, especially in 2 & 3, seem to circle around on themselves so the "end" is also a quick shortcut back to the beginning. The demo level so far doesn't have much of a throughline to it, and the portal placement is a bit awkward. I'd suggest doing a bit more of what was done with the Fissure Falls portal and giving each portal its own little zone designed around the world it takes you to, a bit like how Spyro 3 had themed portals, while designing a general path the whole homeworld should take you on, ending with the Boatman (or a boss portal if those will be in the game).
Summer Forest and Sunrise Spring don't circle back around on themselves either. They're both the first homeworlds of 2&3 and are both mostly straight paths to Crushs dungeon / the balloon. Just like how in Past Chasms, you go from the meadow to the stonehenge area to the beach then across the bridge to the boat. That's the "coherence/flow."
Theres 3 portals in the center because it's supposed to be like Stonehenge, with some of the portals formed from the rocks. So they ARE "themed portals." The Rainy Mesa portal is right there blocking your path because it's the first homeworld and is more of a "tutorial" for new players similar to Glimmer. Knightmare's Court is a boss fight so it's up higher on the rocks across from Hunter's gliding tutorial. You can only reach it by gliding and hovering to "prove yourself ready."
I've put an astronomical amount of work into this already. It's not getting a "second pass." I really don't appreciate acting like I didn't put thought into this because I very much did.
Idk why, but Spyro looks so so smol
Smol bean
I was scrolling quickly and read this as “Spyro: Crisis in Chernobyl” for a second.
I had never seen the world “Chronolia” ever before this so I can see why you’d see it as “Chernobyl”!

Is there any way I can interview the developer and get a press kit? It’s been years since the last time I interviewed a fangame/indie game developer for a magazine. Years ago, I interviewed Cyreides about Spyro: Myths Awaken for the Retro Fusion magazine years ago.
what??? amazing
and best wishes nick
wont this get cease and desist just like myths awaken?
If this gets as much attention as H2M or Halo Online, or if it violates a Nintendo Patent, maybe.
@@MrJohn8apie there’s always a risk for sure. But looking at other Activision/Microsoft fan projects like all the THPS and Crash Bandicoot ones, I’m not super nervous around it.
The textures look great, just like PS1, but those animations are kinda rough. Mainly jumping, charge jumping, and gliding just look a bit off.
this isnt using the original vertex animation. I've recreated every animation on a more modern skeletal mesh, by hand, keyframe by keyframe, in blender. it's extremely time consuming and difficult so the animations are what they are. Using the original animations is basically impossible
also the textures look just like ps1 because they literally are the ps1 textures
amazing mods
This isn't a mod, it's a fangame. I remade the movement and game logic from scratch in Unreal Engine and redid the animations by hand in Blender.
It being considered a mod kinda feels like a compliment too lol
Are the 41 percent glasses still in the game?
I'm gonna do my best to hide this "Best wishes, Nick!" in my comment.
This game gonna get cease and desist
Hello. This project is cool. How can i change config to PS2 controller? I went to options/display, I tried PS controller and it doesn't work on my Dual Shock 2.
all that option does is change the appearance of the buttons (like the triangle to talk text above npc's heads). PS2 controllers dont work on Windows, you would need some kind of adapter
It's a fine game technically, but unfortunately it doesn't really show any proper level design, it's just a bunch of stuff thrown together, and it makes me doubt if the devs are really able to do it justice
Does anyone know what Spyro fangames and Spyro inspired games I can play?
This is the only one with a public demo!
Is this a fangame or a mod? I legitimately can't tell lol
