I bought the exact same tarp because of your review. Yesterday, I got the seam sealed using your advice on this video. Worked wonderfully! Without your video, I would have made quite a mess of it. Thanks so much!
When I seam sealed my last tent, I used Seam Grip as well. I went to my local CVS and bought a makeup brush. The pharmacy there gave me a syringe for free. One tip to make sure you get good penetration as you go along is to look for the thread in the stitching to darken slightly. When that happens, you know you've saturated it with the sealant.
Luke, didn't you do another video like this where you sealed a tent in your back yard? I could swear I did my tent after watching your earlier video!
Still relevant to this day. Just bought a Rab silwing tarp which needs sealing. Wish me luck !!
I know your doppelganger, looks flipping identical to you, he's my old soccer coach, Joey, lives up here in the NW. You talk the same too. Totally a compliment btw, your twin is like one of the most brilliant minded humans I've ever met, and you seem as though you have a similar way of thinking and teaching.
I know this is like 5years old, but This was a great video.
The syringes made a world of difference, I tried without because the delivery was delayed twice... Not the worse decision I ever made, but I used way too much and was unruly.
For those looking at doing this, seam seal is very watery, it drops and can be very messy get the syringes.
My seal came with 1 brush and 1 brush head.
Also to clean the brushes or your hands, a combination of Brake parts cleaner and orange hand cleaner, promise it works great.
syringe is a great idea will use that next time, i always but talc powder on mine when its dry, as it can stick to itself sometimes and the talc prevents this.
Great info on how to seal your tarp to prevent moisture leaks/damage to the thread line !
So helpful! Thanks! I bought all the supplies you showed, and I'm ready to go. I sure do appreciate the lesson.
Since I've never bought anything that wasn't already seam sealed, thanks for doing this. I mean it seems obvious but who's to say I'd get it right first time out!
I did the same to my kelty noah's tarp. Unfortunately seam grip remains able to stick to itself indefinitely and the seams will find eachother in a stuff sac. You can fix this in two ways. One, use seam tape. Apply it over the seam grip while it is still wet and cover all of the exposed seam grip this is the cleanest way to do it and provides a very good professional result. The second way is you can dust the seam grip with talcom powder when it is almost cured. This is adequate but not as good.
Those brushes are called acid brushes, great for one time use on contact cement. They come in bulk boxes. Also used in machining for brushing metal swarf off of cutting bits/drills, brushing on cutting lube, etc.
What a great little tip Luke!
Awesome! Thank you very much.
I did the seams on my tent did not know what to do and I k how I used way too much thank you for showing how to do it the right way
1:40 "nice and stiff Just the way you like it... For your makeup brush" nice save bro
I always pack some shoe-goo and patches for my tarps and tents.
Leukotape works in a pinch for the emergency small stuff…used it on a mini tarp and poncho after a record breaking wind storm in Colorado a few years ago, I survived. 😂
Great video Luke! But truth be told I would rather spend the extra money and get the aqua quest tarp. All of their tarps come seam sealed and the sealing job is second to none.
Great job Luke. Thanks for the tutorial.
Thanks Luke now I know how this is done I had no Idea till now!
Great Tip "SEAMS" Easy!!
+ben terwellen I see what you did there hahaha
Outstanding idea to use syringe! I've gooped up many tarps and ponchos using Seam Seal directly from the tube. On eBay, 4 syringes with curved tip for $1.99.
Wow that looks so much better than what I just did. Also saves on product:).
Great job luke! I've been wanting to get more specific about my application. used to spray my previous tents with a silicone spray which does work very well. However if you get a tear in your material and try duct tape it/or patch it... Nothing will stick to the silicone!!! Thanks for sharing!
Excellent Video - Thanks for posting.
Harbor Freight has Acid Shop Brushes, Item # 61880, 36 ct for $3.
Question - When both seam sealing and applying a waterproofing treatment for the fabric, which process should be done first?
The Seam Grip product is also what the Customer Service recommended for my Browning Big Horn Tent and I'm looking to use a product Star Brite, for the fabric ($45 at Amazon and apply with a garden-type sprayer, like Thompson has for sealing wood decks).
Excellent! Thank you!
Great & informative video, Luke. As far as the hypo syringe is concerned....I've seen 25cc and 50cc syringes in my local Walmart I the food section (seasoning to be more specific) for injecting/marinating turkeys, chickens, ect. Some have metal tips and some have plastic. Be they will work just as good. (I am lucky to have access to all sizes w/ wife being an RN and me a Paramedic). Every how often do you recommend re-sealing the seams? I usually use a spray-on product and redo 'em every spring (or when/if needed). Keep up the great vids.
thanx 4 the tip as i have some seam sealing to do runny custard and hard prunes
If you are watching this in 2018, you can go to Dick's sporting goods, where Seam Grip is prepackaged with two brushes, an individual brush like Luke used and a tube cap brush so you can brush it on seams as it dispenses from the tube. Price currently, is only $7.99. Using a syringe is optional and perhaps, a little neater. Good video.
Can you use the stuff with the type of tarps that you get at a hardware store
I used this method the other day but I wouldn't do it again. It worked okay, but Tarptent's method looks better. First, silicone sealant doesn't really brush that well. Yes, it's okay, but Tarptent thins the silicone with a little mineral spirits to make it brush on smoother, faster, more evenly, and work into the seams better. The thinned mixture can be brushed on directly with a foam brush without the need for the syringe. Also, there's no way the silicone is going to pull out of the tip of my syringe; it's in there for good. Too bad--though it was cheap it took a while to get. I would like to have been able to re-use it for something else.
I bought the stuff today to do this. Wally got me for over 4 bucks for one syringe but I'm on a tight schedule getting ready to head out in a week .5. my ridge line lis leaking badly on my Superfly. On hole is almost as big as a pinhead.
Thanks for the technique.
You are welcome Macdivers!

Great Vid Bro, thank you for the Tutorial but im asking me why is someone selling a tarp with a Gigant seam and no tape or seal on it?
Hey, at least you left Susan's owl pillows out of this one. :D
You can buy 100% silicone in a spray can at some hardware stores. I think i pay about $7-8 for a big can and it lasts a long time. Make sure you buy the 100% silicone! Spray it own and be done. You can also reseal your shoes by spraying them....ponchos, etc. I HAVE NEVER FOUND ANYTHING THAT THE SILICONE HURTS..... but you try a section of whatever you are treating first to be sure.
Thanks so much for sharing!! Not that it matters, just curious, why do you prefer this over ironing tape? What do you favour about it? :)
What size tube of seam sealer do you need to make sure there's enough to finish the job?
does it matter if you put the seam sealer on one side or the other?
Great vid thanks!
Luke this was great and informative. I don't think any of us do this everyday, so it's nice to get some how to advice. Thank you.
On another note, "your wife or your daughter's makeup brush"? Man, makes me glad I have boys. They're ages 14 and 12. I couldn't imagine dealing with a girl that age. Kids want to grow up so fast these days.
On your next adventure might you use periscope as a live Q&A?
“Nice and stiff like you like” 😂😂
Great process!
love that syringe with the fine tip. Thanks for sharing. ~Dawn
TheOutdoorGearReview hey man have you ever seem sealed a poly tarp?? I've been looking at the pvc glue as a sealant and cant seem to find allot about it.
where did you get the sirgenge?
how do i pull toes silicone out of it? it stucked right inside of tube, no air in and out
Cool I found this vid! Luke you rock buddy
Where can I get the tip for plunger!!!!????
Good work
How often does one need to seam seal ?
why didnt you do the other side?
Those are called "acid" brushes and you can get 50 of them for about 4 bucks at Harbor Freight.
Is that basically 100% silicone you are using.
Thanks for video and tutorial.
Thanks, -- Clark
Petroleum jelly will do the same thing, keep it in your pack use as needed.
C
That brush is called an "acid brush" had the same shit including the syringe in bench stock at the army depot I worked for looks like skillcraft.
what's wrong with "coleman's seam sealer"? that's all I've ever used,.
Nothing, Also 🇺🇸I have very old Coleman Lanterns just rebuild them .....
A couple beginner q's: 1) can this product be used indoors or are fumes too noxious, 2) what is full cure time?
Do the seams on ponchos need to be sealed?
+Bobby Harper Do you get wet? ;)
TheJohn8765 You wait till your tent leaks before sealing the seams?
Bobby Harper Weren't you talking about ponchos?
TheJohn8765 Yes, do ponchos need to be seam sealed? I hear of threads stretching and leaks starting but don't know if seam sealing works or not or can't be done on that material. Is there a different sealer used? Are you here to answer questions or waste my time with smart ass answers?
I would thin it out then spray it on with an air brush
What no bloopers?
If you're cheap and in a hurry rub a candle on the seams.
Easy project. Close up really show off the poor stitching quality of that tarp. I wouldn't have expected that for the price of that tarp. Not to mention. It should come seam sealed already.
Good job. Nice vid. Thanks.
+Leslie S it's really easy to seal a tarp. But my most recent tarp is the snugpak tarp and it comes seam sealed.
+Leslie S pro. You get to stay dry in the rain after. Cons. It can be messy if your not careful.
"Make up brush" ? Those are brushes for work. Mechanical jobs, cleaning rifles. Industrial jobs. Tool boxes.
Joe Frank hahaha, means one of them swiped HIS brush!
The brush your using is called a acid brush or oiler brush , not sure but only woman I know that would use one these brushes has a last name of Frankenstein
can you seam seal a hammoke
Honey, here you go…nice and stiff just the way you like it 😉
Nope. Was not on amazon. Which is why you re use it
It's an acid brush!
Makeup brush ? Your wife must use bondo.. The brush is for glue. or maybe mary kay car paint..
This seems like a good idea ... hahah - SEEMS ... see what I did there? Hmm? o.O HMMM?!
I'll just see myself out, thanks ....
Craft stores like Michaels have syringes and brushes.
Nice and stiff, just the way you like it ...
Bruh why not seam-seal the Stove Hut 70?? Lot of crying going on.
Next time buy a cheap paint brush zo the misses and daughter won't get angry with you. Hihihihi.....
