The Ford 427 SOHC: Through The Eyes of Legendary Engine Builder Ed Pink (His LAST Engine Build)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 6 жов 2024
- Ed Pink has been a prominent engine builder since 1960 having conquered NHRA INDYCAR USAC and IMSA with his legendary engines. One engine Ed is known for is the iconic Ford 427 SOHC (Single Overhead Cam) or CAMMER V8 used in NHRA competition during the glory days of Garlits, Prudhomme, and others. At age 92 Ed has just finished his FINAL engine build and it is a Ford SOHC 427. We sit down with him to hear his firsthand account of being approached by Ford in 1966 to build these engines for public sale and develop a competitive drag racing program for Lou Baney and Don Prudhomme. Ed Pink is truly a living legend and one of the last living members of the pioneer generation for motorsports in the world.

This video was 100% Ed's idea. He wanted to share his story and have his last engine rebuild ever be documented... Help Ed and leave a thumbs up on this video! (it helps more people see it) and send it to one of your friends too! Ed Pink is one of the final pioneer members of motorsports still alive and his life wisdom shared in little nuggets throughout this video are absolutely priceless. Isn't his memory of technical details completely shocking?

Yes
Ironically I got up, put on an Ed Pink shirt... got on UA-cam and there he is!! 😊
HE LIVED IT BREATHED IT LOVED IT. I HOPE HE DOSN'T GET BOARD. WHAT A BRILLISNT MIND. YOU KEEP DOING WHAT YOU ARE DOING ONCE THESE GUYS ARE GONE. THIS RITCH HISTORY. GOES WITH THEM. YOU. !! PLEASE GO SEE CHONNY COLETA. / SCHUMACKER SR./ BIG DADDY/ SHERLY MULDOWNY/ / FORCE/ ED MCULLA /THE SHAKE / AND KENNY BERNSTEIN BEFOR THEY PASS AWAY. LOVE YOU MAN 😎👍🏽❤️
There are a lot of questions about this engine that are left unanswered. As far as I can find NASCAR banned the SOHC and OHV Hemi in 1965 not 1964 . It opens the question about the 1963 430 Chevy mystery engine that never came in a production car and some say that only 20 existed bit it was allowed to run the entire year . It was far faster than any other brand but had problems lasting a 500 mile race . Anyway there are aftermarket blocks today that are strong enough to make a modern SOHC reliable. Amazing that the Fe engine is still.popular as a true Hot Rod engine and the improvements continue .
Thank You so much for making the effort to make this video with "The Old Master".
92 years old and his is still sharp as a tack . Mr Pink has forgotten more about building a engine than any of will ever know 😊
Absolutely true
Doesn't sound like he's forgotten anything!
@@DSG-br5lkyou beat me to it bud. Doesn’t sound like Mr. Pink has forgotten a damn thing.
and knew where every part was and explained it
You are damn straight! "Pink" showed the quick way to the end of the 1320, all day!!!!
Ford Engineers should be forced to go sit with Ed Pink for a week and Q & A him.... What an amazing man!
This probably will be the last testament of this man's knowledge. Thank you for interviewing him/hanging out.
Sir Ed Pink! 🐐
This man deserves an hour long documentary for all he gave the world of motorsport!!
Absolutely
Totally agree. Almost every funny car I loved in the past had Ed Pink racing engine stickers on his car.
@@Stapleton42 This man was torching the factory Porsche teams with their own 962 Prototypes!
He cracked the Bosch Motronic injection system computer, changed the cams added new engine coating tech and squeezed another rumored 150 hp HP out of the flat six!
Ed's engines smoking past the high budget, factory Porsches on the high speed banks of Daytona at the 24 was GOD tier!
I couldn't tell you how many engines in the 70's were Ed Pink, but I can tell you they won a lot of races and sounded better than everyone else. God bless this Man. He's a Treasure who will never be forgotten.
Anyone notice that when the conversation kinda turned to mortality and people sitting in front of TV's, Pink changed the direction FAST. The man doesn't dwell on that kinda stuff...he's got work to do!
He spoke his mind on that topic once we were done filming. You can imagine what he thinks about it and you'd probably be right lol
Well he needs to!
Ed Pink- What an incredible human being, I wish there was a "love button" instead of a "like button" on this video, at 92 years young he is the sharpest tool in the toolbox and his legacy will live on for eternity, he is a gift to motorsports and humanity and I'm thankful that he gave you the opportunity to spend some time with you and record it for all of us.Thank you!
I couldn't have said it any better.
Fun fact, Don Garlits was trying to break the 426 to go back to his beloved 392's, because he thought it wouldn't be as good, it never worked in his opinion, so he deliberately tried to spark knock it into oblivion. Turned out the more timing he put to it, the faster it would go. This was said by the man himself in an interview
Love these vids with the old guard, the stories you hear is awesome
interesting!
I've seen that video here on UA-cam
I remember hearing that
He stopped at 60 degrees because it was kicking like a mule, 75 degrees is absolutely insane!
That is one main reason why I love the FE so much, it is so much like the 392. Just a sturdy 2500 hp block. If you dry deck fill it , you can get it to take 5000 hp, and there was a Dove dry deck that could live under the Cammer at 8000. But time marches on. Bill Coon was making stuff a few years ago. Ed Pink the man, the legend!!!
The legend himself. I hope that when I am 92 my mind is still that sharp. The amount of knowledge that he has gained over his lifetime is so immense that it would take many many episodes even to begin to scratch the surface. He still has the passion today as when he started and you can hear it in his voice. Do as many videos as it takes to preserve this automotive history and teach the world of just how much genius these individuals from this era possess. Keep doing this.
Thanks man we will keep it going 💪🏻
Meh, I can't even remember where I put the laptop I'm watching this on. Not 92 either.
Ed's memory is amazing at 92. He's likely forgotten more than most of us know about engine building. Such a rad video and I'm glad he's reached out to you to do this. It needed to be documented like this, so thank you.
Clint Eastwood is 93 and just as sharp. Life is short he's right, the body wears out quick while his mind could go another 50
This is a rather sentimental video for those of use who really appreciate the early years of racing, with Ed Pink being one of the main pioneers. Thanks Ed, and thanks guys, for making this special video for all of us. That engine is gorgeous. I could never get tired of just looking at it!!!
Thanks man!
Yes ! It is !
Thank you for Filming this!! As an engine guy getting to see how Ed Pinks mind works and just listening to how things use to be done is absolutely invaluable, you are the Only one going around talking to all of these greats before they are gone forever, thank you!! I really appreciate it!
thank you sir we are glad you're here for it!
What this guy said!
Agreed. Thanks to you we have the history of what makes us car nuts from the men who made us want to be just like them when we grew up. Your channel is the history channel for car guys 👏
Not the ONLY one.....check out Dragboss Garage !!
So many of these greats in the racing world are already gone, and others like Ed are hanging it up and there isn't enough film or printed material to document what is slipping away. Thank you for doing this, and thanks Ed for your contributions over the decades.
Thank you for documenting this. It’s so cool to hear all the history and technology they used back then
Thank you sir!
Ed Pink is a living legend! Thanks for this interview, very cool to hear his story!
Thanks man!
These videos are CRITICAL.
This firsthand knowledge and undocumented history from the masters has got to be recorded before these heroes are gone.
Thank you so much for this work and for letting Ed speak uninterrupted.
Absolutely that is our goal!
That man is a master craftsman. So very appeciate people like this in world. I know it’s and engine. Taking that to the top level is inspiring.
I think I learned a bit on how to live life.
They absolutely are !
I wish more of these older guys would do this . This is important work, and you guys are doing a fine job. Keep up the great work, and THANKS ED !!
This is greatly appreciated.
I was expecting a really old school build, but Ed’s clearly moved with the times, and his crank and cam position sensor solutions are so elegant! Having an ex Cosworth engineer on call to design your ITB injection setup is the dream.
Ed is one of the last of a dying breed. Thank you for helping bring his story to us.
Thank you for being here for it!
My Dad who passed away back in 2001 used to say the same thing Ed said, my mind says I can do it but my body says no you can't. Those words bring back a flood of memories about the times my Dad and I spent in the garage together.
This man is amazing. I'm 72 and have tinkered with Fords all my life. But I have Parkinson's from Agent Orange I got in Vietnam. I still have the yarn to play with my 70 Mach 1 I have had for 50 years now but my body just won't let me. Ed is so lucky. His mind is better than mine and he's 20 years older. I am so envious. Keep on goin Ed.
I remember as a teenager going to Panarama City / Van Nuys next to the RR tracks and hear those thundering cars doing burn outs down the street. One of the guys doing the burn outs was Pat Foster and when I started my career in professional racing I got to work with him and told him that story and that’s how I found out that he was there. I’m now 62 and semi retired!
That’s awesome!!
@@Stapleton42 while working for Danny Thompson (Mickeys son) in Huntington Beach our shop was right across from Little John Butera so I got to know him as well!
At 62 ,you are way too young to be talking retirement....
Old stomping grounds spent many nights on VN blvd, super shops back in the day. Lived behind the Arbys there. Man i got in a lot of trouble lol.
That engine is literally like a mirror. Amazing stuff. Ed needs to write a book about modding the SOHC engine. Ed is an amazing guy. I'm so glad he called you.
This to ME at least, is THE most awesome video You've done yet. Bravo Mitchell, Mr. Pink is one of the engine builders I've always held the utmost respect for.
thanks man!!
What an honor it must have been to be contacted by Ed Pink to do this video. It is SO important that historical figures such as him are getting their stories documented. GREAT video!!
Thanks Keith!
Every time you out do yourself. You have just completed a video with the ultimate guru of building performance engines. Congratulations !!
Thank you william!
I'm an older guy,,I remember as an kid seeing the front engined dragsters with the engine by Pink on them. IMO, this man is truly a legend.
Legend in the 60"s if you wanted the best it was Pink or Black. I always Think Pink. Loved it Glad you Captured this Rare Moment in Time. A Hero in my Book.
Thank you Stephen
@@Stapleton42 It is me who appreciates you, I loved the hydro vid My Hometown. Anything with an Engine I'm In!. You just Documented History. Thanks again. 42 for the win!
Ed Pink is a National Treasure. His knowledge and sense of humor shine through is if it's the mid-60s.
Thanks for the interview with Ed. I remember when Shirley Muldowney would win an event she would always thank Ed Pink for the race winning engine. Truly an amazing man for sure.
That reminds me Shirley lives near us now. We need to talk to her 😂
@@Stapleton42 She loves doing interviews. I think you should get in touch with her.
@@Stapleton42yeah U do, like asap PLZ
Ed is an absolute treasure. He remembers more information than most books could ever teach you.
Ed Pink is one of the most iconic superstars in the racing world. I have been a fan since the late sixties. To see this now is super awesome. Ed, I hope you are with us for a long time, you are THE MAN!!!
Wow!!! Just when I thought you couldn’t find more cool stuff, you find Ed Pink. What a gem and a legend! Thank you for doing this!
Glad you enjoyed it!
No body can touch his motor builds
I had a similar experience with a gentleman named Al Moody. He built an engine for my project and it was amazing listening to his stories of working on GT40s and Ford racing engines from the 60s. I'm a Ford guy and Ford engines are the only ones for me because of the history guys like Ed Pink and Al Moody provided. Thanks for this video!!!
Ed Pink is an absolute icon. Especially for cammer fans. You did an absolute service to us intervening Mr pink. Thank you
As a kid in high school I was fortunate to get to know Ed Pink and see his shop! Not many geeks in school ever had such a chance! Grew up in Woodland Hills and went to high school with his daughter, my in to being able to have the chance. The man is a living legend a I had an experience I will never forget! God Speed Ed Pink, "The Silver Fox" as known by his family and friends! BTW I'm now 68.
Wow, that was a special episode! The Great Ed Pink, what an incredible mind, still sharp as , at 92! Thank you Sir, for your service to the world of racing. Ed has been my hero for 25 years, every engine that goes out of my shop, has a little of the knowledge and attention to detail that I learned from this great man. Much respect.
Hard to find the words to express how good it was to spend 52min with Ed (again since I loved the last Ed vid you did). Bravo to you're continued history documentation young man.
Thank you sir. We are glad you’re here
Your killing it on racing history. Thanks for keeping it alive!
How awesome was it to hear Ed Pink tell history!! It's like a discovered time capsule of racing history!! This is bad ass!!
Thank you for these videos, the value of information and just simply hearing a legend like Ed Pink talk is worth more than anything
This was to me the best historical video yet ….. you could have spent a year with Ed and barely scratched the surface….. keep up the good work man
Mr Pink is a treasure. Agree about never retiring. Keeps the mind sharp!
The reason Im here in Cali.! Always love this man!! Thank you for everything ED!
always love Ed and could listen to his wisdom for hours! you are truly blessed to have had that chance. thank you so much for doing it and i look forward to seeing his hot rod and hearing that motor roar
I'm not into drag racing. I'm not even American, but this video appeared in my feed and because I like cars, I watched it. Without taking anything away from modern engineers, men like Mr Pink are rare indeed. It truly is like going back in time when guys were pioneering engineers and improving on what they had. He is a true inspiration to all, no matter what job you do. And when retirement comes, stay as busy as your health allows you to be.
What a Privilege to Meet & Document ,Mr Ed Fink ...,Himself...the detail of him explaining, what ,work, & didn't, & the fixes....Timing. .92 & explains Everything..
Ed maybe 92 but his terminology is DEAD NUTS Timeless!! Thank you Sir, your attention to detail says it all.⭐✌️
Yes 😂
Thank you both for sharing this. listening to the legend Ed Pink himself talking us through his last engine build, it like getting to watch DaVinci paint his last painting. Ed Pink sir thank you for all you've for motorsports. That engine is a work of art.
Absolutely man. Glad you’re here for it
Loved the Pink videos. Would really like to see in the future a Video of either the Herb Mccandless Museum/Shop in NC (I believe his Museum is the ole Sox & Martin shop), the Big Daddy Don Garlits Museum in FL, or the Ohio George Montgomery Speed Shop in OH (the oldest operating performance shop in the USA, & it feels like a Museum)
Those are great ideas!
@@Stapleton42 Big Daddy's museum is a must see
@@Stapleton42hell yeah, u better git on it before they are gone.Know what u mean. PLZ, THX.
Inspirational, emotional, educational and exceptional. So grateful both of you and Lake Speed, Jr. were chosen by Mr. Pink to present this story, and so wise to allow him to quarterback the presentation. Thank you, Ed Pink. You have been a legend my entire life.
EXCELLENT Interview...back in 1970 (I was 8 years old) my dad had a business around the corner from his dyno shop and a few times a day you would hear the AWESOME sound of a Ed Pink Engine being run..still hear it my head...also I met him at OCIR way back then and he was such a nice humble guy that loved to talk to us youngsters about engines...good times thank you for this interview!!
awesome!! Thank you
I had the opportunity to meet Ed, and anyone else in the San Fernando Valley who made horsepower as a 30 year old Sunnen Field Engineer in the late 80s and early 90s.
The things that I saw Ed doing were incredible! His dyno, aside from the usual electronic meters, had a huge array of analog meters. I really enjoyed this content. God bless Ed!
Thank you so much for this, the Ford Cammer is my all time favorite engine. Ever since I saw a time chain 35 years ago.
Awesome!!
This is pure gold and a real service to the history of automotive performance WELL DONE Ed and those who filmed him !
I loved watching ed pink share his history. and thank you for doing this. The advancement this man has in racing history is enormous!
I have nothing but respect for Ed Pink he falls into a category of men like Keith Black, Don Garliets, Parnell Jones, Tommy Ivo and the list goes on. When these guys are gone the mold will be broken. Kids today don't even know what points condenser, jet drills, main jets air jets, SOHC means. I remember his shop in Van Nuys. So great seeing this. I still have the tool to remove the value springs from Ford flatheads that my late Dad used to hop up his '32 Ford. My Dad's car would put out so much horse power back then he started breaking axles, the crankshafts would flex and break because there wasn't enough main bearings. Those were the days. Great love for that stuff right along side of my late wife ❤
That man is a hot rod genius and legendary gearhead!!! God bless him! And thanks for doing this video!!
Thanks man!
@Stapleton42 your welcome brother!!
Great interview....we are loosing all the great from the golden age of cars ..thanks for putting this together...one of the best I have seen ever ...
Thank you Gerald!
That was the best interview I have seen in a while. Thank you so much. I'm going to watch this several more times today and when my Daughter gets home we are going to watch it again together. Oh and YES!!!! I would LOVE to see a upload about that Cammer Manual!!!
it will be on the stapleton42extra channel later today!
@@Stapleton42 Awesome! Thanks again for recording the history of all forms of Racing.
Great video. At the start, i seen the timer and thought id watch 10, maybe 15 minutes. Man i couldn't leave it. Love ed pink and lake jr. Camera man BB is a great guy too.😊
I am the camera man video editor and owner of this channel so thank you 😂
Damn Stapleton, this was an amazing video and it also tugged on my heartstrings. What an amazing man Mr. Pink is. The time machine talk at the end along with the rest of the video really motivated me, thank you!
Thank you! That was my goal!
My mom worked for Ed Pink around1970 as his book keeper. I was only around 8-9 years old but still have great memories of meeting Ed and being around drag racing. My mom later worked for DiMarco boats so drag boat racing became part of my life. I feel so blessed. Ed is and always has been a genius!!!
Thank you so much for bringing us more from an absolute legend in the Engine Building industry. What I love about Mr. Pink is he is no one trick pony. Drag Racing, Indy Car and others, always innovating, learning and moving forward. Awesome!
An absolute true GENIUS, as he has the ability to explain the complicated in easy common sense terms!
This content is legendary brotha. You guys kick Fkn ass!
Thanks man!
I would absolutely love to sit down and listen to Ed and alot of the other old school engine builders and racers for as long as i could. That man has probably forgotten more about building an engine than ill ever know in my lifetime. Absolutely awesome video guys thank you for sharing this experience with us!!
I have so much respect for ed pink and so happy to see him still going :)
Ed is awesome!
Gleam every inch of information from these old cats because everything after them was built on their backs. Even ed, still setting the standards of excellence at his age is awesome. The reason we don't have guys like this anymore is because of not having interns that will literally do the job for free just to learn how to be the best. That takes a passion for excellence thats not seen much in today's bolt on and go world. That engine right there proves it. The attention to detail is incredible. Inside and out. Thank you guys so much for bringing this to the racing 🏎 fans and builders out there. Someone could be the next Ed pink. Hey it only took him 60 years but man it was worth it . Thanks Ed
Such an amazing video and very sweet of Ed to walk through all of the history on it. What a wealth of knowledge!
Thankyou very , very much for sharing all you have done . Sir Ed Pink 😎👍👍
God Bless Ed Pink from racing fans all throughout the world.
What you guys did here is cathartic to racing fans young and old.
This was the greatest tribute to a legend of speed.
Thanks man we appreciate you being here for it!
This channel has become a very big deal. I am 60, and this is better than Disneyland EVER was. Preserving history is youtube's greatest purpose. THANK YOU! 💪🇺🇸👍
I’m super happy that you do this guys, this content is what I love and is available whenever a guy wants. Ed is a freaking legend.
What a treat! That man is a walking museum piece. As a kid growing up in the 60's and 70's in SoCal his name was revered as it still is. That he is as spry as he is, is amazing. What a great man, what a tribute and a gift to us all to have this video of him.
Fantastic video keep up the great work, someone was needed out there to keep these old stories alive you both are doing it
Glad you enjoyed it!
This is just spectacular and amazing. Seeing Mr. Pink speak of the past and everything he has been through and accomplished is inspiring and leaves me speechless. The best way to know the past is to speak and sit next to someone that has lived it.
Once again you two knocked it out of park. You both have a great knack for asking the right questions. Logan, I was just sitting here thinking, what did he think of EFI? He loved it. You could shoot days of him working and taking and I would watch it. Thank you Ed, for sharing your story. I am humbled and forever grateful to all the legends who made motor sports what they are today. God bless you all...
Thank you Joe 💪🏻
I am incredibly honored to see this video. I love the Cammer. I’m also a lifetime member of the FE family. 390s were what I raced and I have a deep appreciation for the guys inside who made it happen. Thank you Mr. Pink! I have gotten 700 hp N/A from my 390 .030 over I am blind now and can’t see well enough to drive. I truly miss the 8000 rpm runs. Thank you sir for the opportunity to learn from you.
Bless you all for going to his shop and I hope you will continue to develop your history!
Bless you all for going to his shop and I hope you will continue to develop your history! You told me that my mind would be blown when I saw your SOHC FE, and I can say hearing Ed Pink was a mind blowing experience, Thank you 🙏
Thank you for being here for it man!
Thank you for this. This is one for the ages. I was reading about Ed Pink and his engines when I was a kid reading Hot Rod Magazine, then to come across this video, wow! This was a master class in engine fundamentals from one of the greatest architects ever. Thank you Ed Pink for doing this video.
I'm 63! He's right, you gotta keep going. I'm in the surgeons office for followup to back surgery, I'm loosing my mind not being able to do the things I love!
This just may be my most favorite you tube video ever! I am naturally an 'engine nut', plus Ed Pink, whom I knew nothing about before watching this, besides hearing his name mentioned from time to time, was beyond gracious with his time with you guys, (which as Ed said, was for us)!
Thanks man! Have you seen the other Ed Pink shop tour video we did?
I'm now 67 years old, formally educated in Automotive Technology and engine machine work. Rebuilt my first engine at 16, a 65 Bug. I have now rebuilt everything from 671 Detroit to Stihl chain saw, stock and race. Will most likely continue till I die. Great to see Ed still going. Your videos have increased my learning curve, Thank You.
One of the greatest to ever do it. What he did with Chrysler, ford and offys is incredible. I wish I knew what he's forgotten. My brain isn't big enough to know what he still knows.
Ed Pink- a real life OG - a dying breed for sure - RESPECT
this was an unbelievable episode. Thanks to you and Lake Jr. for bringing this to us.
Thanks man!
Incredible to hear these old stories. I wish I had the knowledge of some of these guys
The man, the myth, and the legend!! What an honour....
Thanks Ed !
A true living legend ! Thank you so much for having the foresight to make this video for everyone, for sharing some of your memories, and knowledge. I wish a lot more people would do this.
Thanks so much for this, as a retired mechanic I would have been honored to work for Ed, but I don't know if I would still remember what he forgot! He is a treasure, and we are lucky to have people like you to remind us, and document true history,❤❤❤ Any chance Ed has a video of the dyno run?
It has not been on the dyno yet. Believe me we wanted to film that
This was one of the best things I've seen on any channel.Love listening to the older guys talking about motors like its second nature to them
I grew up watching a d going to the races in the 70’s and Ed Pink WAS and always Will Be LEGEND! He is right there with Garlits in the hall of fame
I sure hope he had a young fella in that shop who got to keep most of that knowledge alive about the cammer motors, I'm hoping to have one built one day and i sure loved the way this one was bought into the modern era by the genius ED PINK. thank you, sir, for a life well lived and your automotive genius.
Just when I think you could not do a better video, Speedway museum, I am blown away by this! Thank you so much!
thank you ben!
You guys were so lucky to visit with a piece of HISTORY.
I appreciate the video guys! It is painful how loud the giggling is when Ed is so calm and well spoken! I get it you guys are excited!
This was such an awesome video. Ed Pink, what a legend.
His knowledge is priceless.
Rest in Peace Mr. Ed Pink. Part of Americas Greatest Generation. Outstanding interview. Cherish this time you spent with this genius of a Man. A life well done. We all have lost a mechanical artist of his generation.
Huh? As far as I know Ed Pink is still alive
Man whoever bought that last engine is a very lucky boy. Proud to have it somewhere on our soil, given a good home somewhere. What a legend Ed is!
So Incredible. What a legend. Thank you so much for doing this, Both Ed Pink and You guys! My favorite engine of all time, and probably the best builder of these engines. So much history and knowledge that man has seen. Incredible. I was born in 1966 and have always loved the Fords from then The GT40, The Cobras the mustangs etc. I built a Factory 5 Cobra Replica back in 2000 myself from a bare chassis. Such a great video. Thanks again.
Our pleasure!
