- In this video, I discuss and go over how I was able to install an inverter inside my Chevy Volt. This now allows me to plug in different appliances that have a standard household plug.
What are those connectors called? That is really nice

Is it possible to charge the high voltage batteries with the inverter outlet if you connect the charging cable to it.
You would have to connect a 1500w inverter to the 12v battery, however that would drain the 12v battery so quick if you plugged the EV charger into the inverter and used it that way, and you’d be lucky to get 1 mile of range doing that, plus then your 12v battery would be dead and wouldn’t be able to power the cars electronic systems.
It's been a year i'm surprised no one replied to tell you no, you can't draw power from a battery to recharge itself. WHere would the energy come from? You lose energy as you convert it.

200 watts .. how many watts do you think you would be able to safely pull?
I’d have to look into how many watts the car sends to the 12v battery to keep it topped off. I’d say 200 watts may be the limit
If I recall correctly, the 1g volt on board inverter is capable of 1500w and the 2g volt is capable of 1000w.
U can use up to 1500 if u have the right inverter
@@PO-sz7qwi mean technically you might be able to pull more than that, like up to 2000watts for a breif periods like when a fridge compressor needs to start since thats the whole point of having a battery. not sure the max output of the AGM battery but i would guess 2kw for less than 15 min should be okay but then you would want to have the car "on" and the long term load under 1kw. my volt turns off after 3-4hrs of sitting idle while "on". i am pretty sure this setup would continue to drain the AGM battery till its dead and then the car will not want to start until 12-12.6volts are applied again to somewhere in the car like the cig outlet thing,
Hi, does the inverter will work when the car is turned off? And does the high voltage battery will keep charging the small battery even if the car is turned off Whitehorse using the inverter? Thanks
The inverter will work with the car off, however the car does not keep charging the small 12v battery while the vehicle is off.
in my 2013 volt, ive noticed the car will stay turned on for about 3.5 hours if left alone. make sure you disable the options in settings to stop the engine from running when plugged in if youre using this in a garage when the power is out, and turn engine assisted heating to "very cold" or off if available, and then keep the car plugged in even if power is off, i believe it will stop the engine from running. you can over ride the car into running the engine by unlatching the hood regardless of battery state of charge, and you can set the car in mountain mode which will run it at medium load to charge the high voltage battery up to about 50% available state of charge (so like 33% reserve + half of the 66% usable, usually around 5kwh for most models.) was thinking of using this setup if i had a powerouttage lasting less than a couple of days and wanted to keep the fridge cold and maybe run a small space heater. I read somewhere that the DC to DC charging circuit will put out around a max of 1kw/hr to charge the 12v system... the AGM 12v battery can probably put out a bit more than that for a short period of time but oversizing the inverter past 1500W might be a bad idea. 500-1000w should be fine. there are lots of posts on the volt forums about how/when the 12v battery is charged and its not very straight forward. just assume it only charges it when the car is "on" and assume the car will turn off after 3-4 hrs and drawing a load after this will cause a flat battery which will prevent the volt from starting. using a 12v jump pack or some othre source will allow the computer to boot up and recharge the 12v battery if yours is dead (use the jump start posts under the hood since the back hatch is hard to open) and once it starts in drive stop supplying 12v it will charge the battery back up to full. repeated over discharge of 12v batteries especially in cold will destroy them. the original AGM battery is a bit more resistant to being over discharged however.
I would recommend parking the car outside and not disabling the car from gas engine from running.. It shoudl only turn on when the traction battery is depleted.. and that should aid in the longevity of your 12V preventing it from going too low in the first place.
