In 1880, the artist Astley David Middleton (A.D.M.) Cooper visited the Santa Cruz area with his friends. He sketched places in Capitola, Soquel, and Santa Cruz. Early sketches by a well known artist.
In the mid 70's I lived in the Hopcroft Adobe (School Street Adobe). Cornelia Hopcroft lived across the hall from my apt. Every Saturday she would crank up the TV and listen to Lawrence Welk and the lovely Lennon sisters. Ah Onea and Ah Twoa She was 106 years old when I met her. There was a care taker that would come in during the day, fix meals, clean up the place. But overall Cornelia was pretty much self sufficient.
I live in Oregon now, but my Grandpa, my Father and I all attended Soquel elementary. I am sure you folks have tons of pictures, but I am betting you only have one with a log tuck parked on Fanmar Way, in front of my Grandfather's house, Doug Simerly.
We are a first family and we helped other family's come here my great great grandfather moved all these family's here without him what would sc be!!!!!
Born and raised in Capitola. Im old enough to have experienced Santas Village in the late 60s. Left in 2000 and never looked back. Only thing i miss is the ocean.
This sucks my family kept so silent and secretive they did a lot for santa cruz over a 100 years!!! Idk why!!! We helped a lot of these families and where the backbone of santa cruz!!! Even to this day I am told to be quite and secretive idk why we built sc too!!!! We did so much for all of these people!!! The Swanton family needed us!!! My family was movers and lawyers and owned a major department store in town!!! Idk why we are treated like nothing so tired of it we helped build sc too!!!! And my great grandmother was a movie star in Noah's ark and the mermaid queen of Neptune's kingdom too!!! We are sc too!!!! Liebrant, pugget, and Murphy i am the generation who is standing up now!!! Sorry family it needs to be said!!!!!!!!!!!
Christina-- Seems an easy guess that since your great-great grandfather was "everyone's lawyer", and lawyers deal with all kinds of trouble and all kinds of trouble-makers, that there were some bad people looking for him (and family!) from wherever he lived before Santa Cruz. If so, of course they wouldn't tell you or anyone else why. People can't keep themselves from blabbing. Of course now it's all water under the bridge, so quit wringing your hands and calm down.
It's so good to see so many of these places are still there. I have a lot of old movies to look up now too. Thanks!
Very impressive and informative thank you 🙏 for sharing this gem 💎

Wish the Castros never got their land swindled from them. This region would still be immaculate costal range land.
