Something I meant to mention in the script but somehow forgot: this works so well with Shanks because for all we know he could possible one shot an admiral or yonko as crazy as that may sound (and I'm not saying it's the case) the point is we don't actually have a clue where his limit lies.
The majority of the fanbase thought it wasn't possible for Shanks to one shot post Wano and Big Mom Kid before chapter 1079 released. And it's not only that he one shotted Kid but he seemingly did it with no effort, so the possibility of doing the same to characters significantly stronger than Kid is a real thing, once again due to how Oda handles Shanks in each situation giving us the bare minimum.

Bro, are you insane? Shanks went all out against Kidd, if he didn't, Kidd would have destroyed everything. Beckman tells Shanks "it looks like you've seen hell" in his future sight.
Shanks has more feats than Mihawk, Mihawk still ranks above him. You feat obsessed fans are crazy. Nobody is one shotting an admiral.

People are taking this as a literal powerscaling statement rather than a show of how the narrative gives Shanks strength freedom and uncertainty.

Oda had the end of one piece planned since the beginning. Many shonen are limited by the fact that they don’t know if they will be canceled, so those that succeed lack direction by the end. Oda, on the other hand, had the beginning and end planned out, just not the middle! It embodies the adventure of one piece in a way. It’s not about the end or beginning, but the adventure along the way

Oda may have an idea how it ends, but he keep it easily maliable and easily changed. This is why initially he only planned up till Robin and Alabasta, and 7 Warlords be the final opponents.
Blackbeard avoiding Admirals may look like he's too weak.

Think about it like this, why take a fight you don’t have to take? Or a fight you might not win, or a fight you might win but the loses would be to great to recover from and you gain next to nothing from it? He just simply picks his battles and picks his fights, for example he had to fight ace, ace left him no choice on that and it was the only way for him to become a war lord, and he knew whitebeard would try and save him, so he would get his devil fruit. All of that he had to do, there was no other choice and no other option for him. The admirals are probably weaker or similar in strength to him, but the fight to him just wouldn’t be worth it, he’s got greater aspirations than fighting admirals and his goal is the spot imu is holding, being king of the world, and the first step in that is getting a foot in the door and being named king of his island.

Whitebeard’s crew is another way Oda handled his strength. We got to see Marco, Ace, Jozu, Vista and Blackbeard in action before we ever saw Whitebeard step onto the island, all of whom were his direct subordinates. On top of his declining health, Whitebeard didn’t have Ace or (pre-Yami) Blackbeard with him, leaving him down two of his most powerful fighters, something that mattered at the time because we were seeing his best men in combat with the Admirals and Warlords. This is especially relevant because Whitebeard was incalculably stronger than anyone else on his crew and quite possibly stronger than the whole of them combined.
And I mentioned this in my last comment, this all serves the larger narrative purpose of establishing Gol D. Roger. Regardless of who you have as the strongest of the old generation, Roger has been around since page 1 and is the literal gold standard for every other character to be compared to. Whitebeard was the unwilling ruler of the Great Pirate Era that Roger started, and his own death was necessary for the world to begin true change into a different era, mostly unrestricted by the influence of the legendary, dying out old generation. And as we go farther into the story, we realize more and more how impressive it is that Roger was doing this without a Devil Fruit.

Plus he was missing Thatch. Of course we don’t know for sure what his capabilities were (other than the he had no df) but as his 4th Commander he probably wasn’t too bad.
Haven’t finished the video yet but Mihawks introduction was genius in establishing the vague power ceiling of the verse. Then seeing Shanks be casual and have playful banter with Mihawk told me all I needed to know about Shanks level of power
I think the fact that early into the series that Blackbeard's low pain tolerance played a key part in him struggling in fights is why we can accept he's strong, we the readers can accept that he must have something to make up for such a weakness so we don't doubt it when he shows his feats.
Also Oda has the scale of destruction down pretty well instead of just escalating every arc

The core difference here is that in One Piece the main character isn't beating these strongest characters and requiring the power levels to surge up and up exponentially. There's almost always something that the crew's trying to accomplish beyond just defeating the next strongest guy who shows up when they'd all rather just be staying at home.
The only exception i believe is Crocodile, specially with how important he became and his influence right now and that he used to be in New World before alabasta (Also meaning he 100% should been able to use Haki, which he didnt use in alabasta).
and that his bounty now is 1.something billion, so he is near Yonko commanders in that department (bounty dosent mean power level), so him being beat by alabasta Luffy would be impossible.
At least this only happened once for now.

Crocodile is the character I'd be most interested in this context. He's the first Warlord Luffy beat, and it seemed like it somewhat tarnished the idea of "how strong" a Warlord really was. And then, we have Crocodile still pulling his weight in the Marineford Arc and becoming a part of Cross Guild.
Yeah, Crocodile is very interesting in that regard. I didn't talk about him here because one of my most recent videos is dedicated to mostly discussing him in that aspect.

Short defense of Bleache's Byakuya. Bankai makes a soul reaper 5-10 Times stronger. So this Byakuya was at only 10-20% of Power while As Nödt got the bankai buff

Admirals holding back is true. In the holy land green bull flat out said they couldn't fight because the celestial dragons were in the way. In mf its clear if the admirals went all out not only would the destroy everything but would also just murder the weaker marines. Yea they are soldiers that have to follow orders and structures. They don't just let loose and use everything like the pirates can because that comes with consequences for marines.
Just a counterpoint to something you said here, Ace definitely had haki. In the novel (which is canon according to oda) ace was well versed in all three colors of haki long before he ever even met white beard, and even outside of that novel he clashed relative with Blackbeard who we know is and was in the highest tiers of haki comparable to shanks (even gave him his scar). And beyond that what do you think the odds that the 2nd commander of the whitebeard pirates really didn’t know about haki? We just didn’t see ace using haki because pre-timeskip haki was invisible

While it's true that the strongest characters are often still the same by the end in One Piece, it also often creates power level inconsistencies. Like Vista stalling Mihawk who apparently is Yonko level.

Tbh i feel like Oda does a great job but he really messed when it came to Big Mom. In Wano, he presented Big Mom as extremely clumsy and had her lose to Kid & Law. Obviously sooner or later she wouldve had to be defeated(OP coming to an end) but Imo Oda should've had a more proper way of her going out.

all the arguments were pretty sound, except for the one against fujitora and greenbull in the holy land of Marijoa. We quite literally saw how Greenbull was getting scold, by the people he blindly worships no less, for using his powers too freely, and how Fujitora actively started working against the government's interest and was indirectly helping the revolutionaries

Gotta disagree on the holding back argument in the holy land. We clearly hear how fujitora wanted to drop a meteorite but it was played off as a joke since the admirals have to protect the celestial dragons. We see the difference between green bull in wano and the holy land as while the Revolutionary army is strong they'd be wrecked by the admirals especially seeing what kizaru is doing right now
Marine ford it's less on holding back and more on fighting the foe at the time of odas writing since he was still exploring haki at the time. Feat wise the admirals were going crazy so they were showing what they can do especially with akainu Scaring Blackbeard as oda shows he's still a threat to even Blackbeard who just got two fruits and was happy to sink marine ford

I think the admirals never went all out on the holy land. The reason is that we may have never seen admirals going all out, but we did see the aftereffects of it - Punk Hazard. That island showed us just how destructive the admirals devil fruits can be. So if they went all out, there would be no holy land left.

Blackbeard is one of my favorite characters in anime, because he’s really like a mirror world Luffy. He struggles in fights, he has a small core crew of powerful people who respect him but still shit talk him sometimes, he has a dream he wants to fulfil and an inherited will, just like luffy. But unlike Luffy, Teach is a bad person! It’s very fun to see.

2:46 shanks has done so much less fighting than MiHawk, especially early in the series. Mihawk effortlessly dispatched zoro, a more meaningful feat than seeing shanks squash higuma and his nameless mountain bandits, and on top of that, Mihawk actively participated in the battle at marineford, giving the audience an even better taste of what he’s capable of, on top of establishing how he holds back earlier with his fight with Zoro.
No way we’re saying using the SBS is good story telling.
Err actually, it was quite literally shown that the admirals had to hold back in marijoa due to fujitora not using his full range of abilities like in dressrossa, he wanted to nuke the place but he was reminded by green bull, besides, this was all according to plan for the revolutionary army, it's not like they would've won in a fair normal fight

Luffy forgetting to use conquerors coating against the seraphim so Oda could stall
Big mom not using conquerors coating against Kidd and law
Law Devil fruit not being able separate Kaido and big mom because of Haki

The list goes on, essentially the power system only works for the plot.

Said this over a year ago and I'll say it again - every major fight that has happened in the story can be explained thru this such as Garp stalling Aokiji, Yamato being a contentious match up back when GB pulled up to Wano, Shanks scaring off GB, Rayleigh stalling Kizaru, Garp launching Marco with 1 punch, etc.

"Guys they're monsters stronger than yonkos so the god knights must be yonko lvl as well ...Kaido got powercrept...Akainu will be a final villain for Luffy, so he's stronger than Kaido, Shanks came after Kaido so shanks must be stronger than Kaido"... sit tf down ppl. Oda wrote around powercreep perfectly and had Luffy nerfed appropriately till needed as well. Like having Luffy use g5 twice in a row. 2 is the maximum no. of times we have seen Luffy use g5 in a row even back on Wano. The second time he uses g5 he has to put everything he has into that last attack and even risk punching through the island till Momo moves it. After which, he literally falls to the ground from the sky and Yamato has to catch him...JUST LIKE how Franky has to help him out in 1094.
Unlike WCI, where Luffy had to use g4 and then run around for 10 mins to recover haki till he can use g4 again, now he can use g5 (again which he only did the 1st time on Egghead for info dump purposes from VP and to show Lucci his new form and play around. Luffy just had 0 clue that someone as strong as Kizaru and SJG were on Egghead island or he wouldn't have done that) and, once he runs out of g5 stamina, he can now fight in base/g2 with acoa,acoc and acoo or go back into g5 once more for a final offensive (which again would have worked had SJG not jumped him after keeping his presence there a secret for that long). Don't even get me started on the lasers or Luffy just trying to bfr Kizaru and not actually attack him till the end. Like I said, there are ways to write around powercreep, you're just blind and straight up vacous if you're saying Kaido and other yonkos got powercrept.EVERY single damn time a yonko appears on screen they're nerfed in one way or another.
Maybe now, you finally have an inkling as to why Yonko are always narratively held back through various debuffs - WB (you already know what happened at MF) , Kaido (come on really, the island, multiple enemies, multiple g5 plot armor breakthroughs and several different haki blooms and even then he had to try to tank Bajrang in his much weaker dragon form and tries to 'melt' Luffy's hand before it punches through the island, which otherwise posed no risk to him, he could have easily dodged that if he dodged lightning point blank), BM (suddenly not knowing what acoc or acoa even was in her fight with the supernova duo) and ofc what happened with Luffy (who's also struggling from g5 stamina issues as of rn so it's even more easier to hold him back). 3:45 Luffy wasn't using acoc against Lucci..even the Doffy clash and Kat clash looked like that. YOU srsly think Luffy can equally clash with an acoc weilding g5 Luffy. Luffy goes toe to toe with normal hybrid Kaido in base with acoc yo. Chill, Oda knows how to write around powercreep although that Van Augur anime bs against Cracker was definitely surprising, maybe the biscuit soldiers were weakened by the extreme cold idfk lol.
Now about the Shanks acoo feat against Kid, did y'all forget that Luffy did a very similar feat back in Udon during his training. Go back and count the seconds on it and see if he was or not. That very same Luffy had to improve then go up on the roof only to use acoo and still get hit by a base Kaido.. Luffy then had to improve his acoo and all haki types by so much from then on. We haven't seen any killer of observation stuff yet but Luffy ain't that far off from Shanks even in acoo. Chill

To call one style lazier than the others is just nonsense. Oda’s writing style has written himself into many corners, even if it’s less than others on average. He’s a great writer, but all of these styles have issues that weren’t covered.
Making shanks’ limits unknown is a very good way to describe his strength, and make him a power that is obviously close to the top. Very good style of showing little to make a statement, and differentiating him from the rest of the characters in a very good way. I agree with all ur points on that front, but it’s not immune to its own problems. Making a character that just 1 shots all enemies, scares them off with a stare, and knocks out twice as many as the main character with his presence removes stakes when revolving around this character. Using ur own analogies, there’s nothing that stops him from just taking over the world because his limits are unknown and he can just 1 shot anyone because of implications, but it’s clear that isn’t the case because of written boundaries set. It just makes it seem like “oh, everything is over because *insert strongest character* is here.”
Same is arguable with BB. Having a power well that can hold anything until it’s explained is a similar issue that a character like Sukuna has. He can ass pull things because his powers aren’t explained and it’ll make sense because the writer said so. I don’t think it’ll happen for Oda, and BB will likely have his powers explained before it gets to that point, but to just leave it like that still makes it a negative to the style of protection of said strong character. What’s to stop him from automatically knowing how to awaken the fruits he eats either. Or to mix devil fruit abilities making a DF cancelling shockwave. It’s a no limits fallacy that can just apply to most things that breaks the power system in the other way.
(To jjk readers, no Sukuna’s ability against Gojo wasn’t an ass pull, that’s not my argument. His open/fuga thing is because we don’t know the extent of its ability because it isn’t explained. If Gege wanted to say he can just pull out a purple, or black hole, he could. It’d be an ass pull, but because it was never explained, the writer can still do it.)
The admirals constantly holding back is lazy I’ll admit, but it’s still just as good as the others. They’re 1 of the 3 super powers of the world, and if one goes out of balance, the whole system falls apart. Of the admirals can’t contest the yonko with the assistance of all the warlords, the power system would be broken. However, they still can’t have them destroy every enemy with no difficulty because then the marineford war wouldn’t have the same impact, and the revolutionary army would’ve more than likely been dealt with long before currently. Instead, Oda makes it clear that between personalities and specific circumstances, the admirals are required to hold back in order to keep to their duties. Call it distractions, or a mindset nerf, it’s still resulting in them holding back their power, even if in destruction alone.
WB’s is just as lazy though. His strength comes from his title of strongest, and being nerfed into the ground. Arguably worse. I don’t think WB is a bad character, one of my favorites, but his power was just ridiculous. If you are a man, he’s stronger than you (same with Mihawk, but his is more specified). The only reason he was weak enough to “give a chance” to the navy was because he was old, sick, had to hold back to protect his crew, couldn’t use any advanced haki, couldn’t use conq, and was stabbed before the fight. “If none of that happened, he would’ve been wiping the floor with everyone present.” That’s just unrealistic. The nerfs were drastic to him, but no one can say what affected him to what extent. You could argue that Sickbeard is 50% primebeard or 1% primebeard the same way u could argue that shanks caps out at 100,001 fishmen, or infinite fishmen using this video’s logic.
My point in saying this is not to tear down an opinion or video, but to simply say that one writing style isn’t inherently better than another. The way that Oda world builds is one of the best in writing, and all of these ways are great, however they all have their own problems. A big one being a no limits fallacy. Removing all sense of tension with Shanks since he can just scare of one of the super powers of the world from miles away. Removing all sense of scale by making mystery the power of a character, cuz if u don’t know how it happens, anything could be the reason so anything can be the result. Making all sense of tension leave when dealing with the navy because they’re constantly holding back, so fighting them will never result in their win, and if they do win it’ll be close. And removing all sense of believability by just saying a person was strong, then stripping away a ton of their power to give the combined forces of 2 whole super powers of the world, and the entire navy a chance at victory.

Is bad writing imo. Oda will build up a clash with cligfhangers, build up hype for a char and then ruin them in the next chapter.

1) Greenwood debut in Wano
2) Captain Kid rematch against Shanks pirates
3) Sanji and Luffy vs Kizaru in one panel, then in the next panel Luffy solos both Kizaru and Saturn
4) Saturn being punched by even Franky and being clowned by everyone.
This is not how you protect strong chars especially in a final arcs.
Most fights and conclusions make no sense.

If Shanks was much weaker when Teach scarred him, why Shanks was so certain Teach is going to beat Ace and warns Whitebeard? Ace vs Smoker thing is hilarious, did you not see Ace as a rookie was equal to Warlord Jinbe and Yamato, before that Ace beat also another Warlord as Saturn said so they made Kuma Warlord later to replace it? Ace had no reason to take Smoker seriously, he told him to get lost and Smoker didn't do anything.
Also prime Ace would give difficulty to Admirals as well, remember Nerfed Ace after beaten by Teach, still blocking Aokiji's attack from behind? Ace only lose to Akainu easily because his DF power was directly weaker vs Akainu's just like Enel's vs Luffy.

Fish man Island the way I do. It think it's more of a field and probability thing. But this argument treats it more like a feedback and drain thing.
Now 150k people can in n theory take up more area and more powerful burst covers more area. But I don't think that's what happened on fishman Island. Which would imply the 50k closest to Luffy got knocked out. Which doesn't at all jive with Luffy's haki burst at Maine Ford. Where it was a mostly random filtering.
I think more likely every person has a certain resistance, and therefore a probability that haki will knock them out. A stronger haki simply has a higher probability to knock a greater number out.
Therefore increasing 100k to 150k assuming a similar pool of candidates should mean that 150k/150k would still be knocked out by Shanks.

Yes, each person has a threshold and thats what determines if someones conquerors haki is effective on them or not, we know this because of Jozu and Marco's statement about Shanks.
All Im saying is those 50k fishmen whos thresholds were above Luffys haki at the time, would still fall short to Rayleigh and Shanks haki.. it has nothing to do with distance at all.
They had a strong enough will to withstand Luffys but Shanks and Rayleighs haki would have been too much for them.
So when I say "if there were 150k fishmen or 1million" I dont mean Shanks and Rayleigh would have the haki to "cover that distance" but rather the number of people who can actually withdstand their haki is so few that even tripling the number of fishmen there wouldnt make a difference.
Whereas with Luffy only KOing half of them, we understand there is a clear limit to how many fishmen can and cant withstand his haki.

S-Hawk send Teach under mountain after cutting mountain, Teach showed up seconds later inside the rocks. If Akainu wasn't KOed, he wouldn't fall like that he would attack him right after.
