The original ending of the book in which the movie is based of is that the girls were abducted by aliens, however the publisher thought that the alien abduction ending Made no sense and was extremely confusing so they asked the author to just take out the last few pages creating the perplexing and intriguing ending. The original ending (Chapter 18) was published after Joan Lindsay's death. The girls were not abducted by aliens (although some people postulated that before the chapter was available). They are caught in a time warp that starts when they hike up the hill and is not broken until Michael Fitzhubert finds Irma, when it starts over again. A number of strange things happen, but most importantly they decide to follow a snake down a hole. They do it one at a time by shape shifting, until Irma is alone, and she is stranded on the surface. If you remember the scene in the gymnasium, in the book the girls are seeing a vision of the picnic. Hanging Rock lumbers closer and closer to the picnic grounds until the girls in the gymnasium can see the rotting corpses of Miranda, Marion and Miss McCraw in a cave. One thing that the chapter doesn't explain is if the rock is benign or malign. In real life, indigenous people say there is a evil presence on Hanging Rock. It's possible that Miranda & company are excited to reach another plane of existence when the rock may just be tricking them into killing themselves.
It wasn't aliens. It goes like this: -Miss McCraw joins them and they experience some sort of vortex in a cleft in the wall. -The girls remove their corsets, tossing them over the rock. One hangs frozen in mid air.Miss McGraw says it's "stuck fast in time". - One by one they transform into lizard and crab like creatures (totem animals?) and enter into the rock cleft. - There's a rock fall that seals off the opening forever trapping them (likely dead) in Hanging Rock.
I don't feel like Mrs. Appleyard is a good lady. The plotline with Sarah was very strange. I'm sure she killed her. I don't remember how I came across this movie. I think someone mentioned it and I got curious. It is such a haze really. Pretty much nothing happens, but the atmosphere is really unsettling and disturbing with beautiful visuals.
I think you can draw the conclusion that she murdered Sarah, since she made up the lie about her being picked up by her guardian. Mrs A was clearly going insane at this point.
I think she did kill Sarah and killed herself out of her guilt for doing it - also she was ruined, her school’s reputation completely shot. There was nothing left for her. Or maybe in a last ditch effort she tried to find Miranda and the others and failed.

This movie is fictional but there is some fact to it though. Hanging Rock is a weird place, it has an ominous feeling to it and I have visited it. Watches do stop sometimes. Also over the years people have gone missing there without trace. This story could have easily have happened. The movie for me it’s best scene is where Irma is confronted by the other girls and they just go bezerk. In the words of Ron Burgandy: that escalated quickly.
The scene is on UA-cam. It's very clunky and overlong. Maybe if they trimmed it. At the end she sees Sara, the girl she bullied and who fell out the window. Mrs. Appleyard starts to move toward her and the scene ends.

I think the scene was cut to preserve the mystery. That scene showed one of the missing girls which ends up narrowing the mystery somewhat.
