Funny how Rita Contino showed what NOT TO DO and WHAT TO DO in a single sentence singing Turandot. Notice the position of her mouth... When she smiles on the highest note in "il GRIIIIIIIIIItooooo", her voice is completely out of place, it becomes shrill and the high notes are screamed, but when she repositions her mouth in "in queeeeEEEEEEEEEEELLA MOOOORTEEEEE" , her treble is very rich in squillo, voice with chiaroscuro, girare, all the most beautiful and correct. She should keep the High B in the same place as the other grades, like Birgit Nilsson doesn't. And she had the technique for that, otherwise she wouldn't do it in the other notes. But just notice how a simple change in the position of the mouth changes the whole voice. Amazing, isn't it?!
Edit: She had a coordinated chest voice on "le enigme sono TRE"... HAHAHAHAHAHAHA' PERFECT! I didn't know this soprano, I'll hear more from her. I stand by what I said about changing the embouchure on some highs. The "smile" KILLS the projection. Always keep the O shape as much as possible in the highs.
Edit 2: That scandalous BRAVA at the end... HAHAHAHAHA' Brazilians being Brazilians. I confess that we really scream. We couldn't contain emotions. HAHA' This montage was at my beloved Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro.

I was in the chorus for a performance of Aida in Toledo Ohio in 1982, with Ruben Dominguez as Radames. When he hit that line "Sacerdoti, io resto a te!" ... well, I never heard anything like it. At the Sitzprobe the entire room - orchestra, chorus, singers - broke into spontaneous applause. I can remember that sound even 40 years later - the very definition of "squillo." He was awesome.

I became aware of Giacomini just a couple of weeks ago here on UA-cam. There are a number of videos of him, some in which he is quite impressive. The only reason I can think of as to why he might have been overlooked is that perhaps his stage presence wasn't "movie star" quality.

You clearly have a great ear for singers. I thought I remembered hearing Giuseppe Giacomini sing at the Met years ago; however, it was certainly not like that. His "Cielo e mar" was some of the most thrilling singing I have ever heard. Most of the other singers I have never heard (or heard of) before; however, I enjoyed the entire group. It was particularly nice to hear that baritone sing "Eri tu" so beautifully. And my God, that clip from "In questa raggia" was worth the cost of admission all by itself.

I thought I was on my way to a career in opera. I was told I had a powerful, magnificent tenor voice. I entered a competition and sang Vesti la giubba. My tutor told me it was the best singing he had ever heard outside an opera house. The verdict from the assessor was 'Somewhat operatic in tone'. I knew then I was on a hiding to nothing and that modern teachers had no idea what they were talking about. I despair of hearing a decent singer now.

I aim to get into opera when I have built the voice and the time is ripe. I am considering documenting the process over how many years it takes although I’m not sure that’s a good idea as the early stages may turn people away(?). Voice is tenor.

I came back to this country and my stepfather a man I never liked told me the truth, you sound so zwool it is disgusting. So I believed and thank goodness I listened and returned to my original way of singing daring and gutsy with the breath support needed especially when on the stage.I truly admit that most of today's singers do nothing for me. Could anyone say me, please,What is necessary in order to get a good record contract or so?? I mean, it is quite obvious that Giacomini was a much much much much better tenor than Domingo... In fact, Giacomini was one of the greatest (Domingo, if compared, seems a total dilettante). I need to understand... Something escapes to me... It seems that since fifty years or so is more important promotion than ever before. I mean, in old times there was a logic relation between talent and Fame... As for today, It seems it is not like that anymore. In fact, any bad "product" could be sold as It was gold, and It is ok for anyone... How is It? What happens?? Thanks in avance

Well. When talking about raw material, GG was superior for sure. On the downside, he was very inconsistent. He did not always sing as heard in these clips and cracked often. He was shy, not very charismatic and not too good looking. He did not speak other languages than Italian. His sound could be monotonous. There you go. PD lacked a good B and C, but he was reliable (he sang a lot), musical, more interesting as an actor, fluent in at least 4 languages, he had the looks and knew how to play the media. And his voice simply recorded better. That’s a mix that is hard to beat in modern times. In the old days, the stage/voice came first. Today, it’s the recording studios and media presence. Just look at Kaufmann and the likes.

I'm not a big fan of Giacomini's overly thick, ingolata voice but if I had to choose between him and Domingo's cracks, I wouldn't even hesitate for a second. Generally I hardly ever listen to any of the tenors you mentioned but they were all better than Domingo. I'd add Aragall and Hadley to your list. :) Have a good day.

I have watched your videos and i knew most of the artists but some of them were new to me so thank you for that. I also have a few artists in mind that i think are underrated or completely unknown but not all are from 80s and 90s and i don't know if there are any videos of them singing. I do have audio in my archives though.

barahona68 Thanks. Visconti is a funny case. He added distortion to all of his clips that he uploaded here and that he handed to Bongiovanni to publish... to make him sound bigger I guess. However, there are a few recordings that were published here without his control, and they sound pretty different.

Dominguez was certainly underrated. Cecchele was good in his prime, but as with all the "Melocchi" style singers, who didn't train with Melocchi actually, they get into pressed phonation and some laryngeal depression. In particular Giacomini.
