- Real Madrid were on the warpath. They had sunk Liverpool and coasted to a three-peat of Champions Leagues. In the process, Cristiano Ronaldo had won his fifth European title, behind only Paco Gento.
Then… both Real Madrid and Cristiano Ronaldo fell from their peaks for a little while.
Ronaldo would claim a Serie A and a Coppa Italia from a rather paltry three years before adding to his tally of goals as opposed to silverware in a romantic move back to Manchester.
Real would return to the European and Spanish summit, but only through the bloody-mindedness of Karim Benzema and a three-year spell which saw just one La Liga trophy enter the Bernabeu.

He would have won the 2018 Ballon D’or because he would have stayed at Madrid, and potentially won the 2019 Ballon D’or as well to make it 4 Ballon D’ors in a row and equal Messi record, I don’t think he would have won it in 2021 though, I think that would have been Messi but 2022 could have been him instead of benzema because real madrids Focus would have been on him so he would be the one scoring hatricks and braces in the knockout stages. So definitely one more but it could be 8 Ballon D’ors
