Liszt's first Mephisto Waltz, composed between 1859 and 1862, was conceived as both a piano and an orchestral work by the composer. In my transcription, I borrow elements from both versions and use many of the color stops of the Newberry organ as a means of evoking (and expanding!) the piece's original orchestral palette.
Some background on the "program", or story behind the piece:
Throughout his life, Franz Liszt was fascinated by the story of Faust and he found ways to incorporate its themes many of his works. This waltz, the first of four, is highly programmatic (as is often the case with Liszt’s music), taking as its “storyline” an excerpt from Nicholas Lenau’s retelling of the old legend. In the story, Faust and his diabolical companion Mephistopheles come upon a celebration in a rural inn; they wander inside and Mephistopheles regales the guests with his violin playing, whipping everyone up into a frenzy (In the music, Liszt simulates this with the open fifths in the piece’s first few bars). This eventually gives way to a slower, languorous theme, marked dolce amoroso. At this point in the story, Faust retreats into the forest with a woman from the gathering, and the two give themselves over to mutual desire. After a time the opening material returns as though portraying Mephistopheles chasing Faust in relentless pursuit of his soul.

I can't explain with words how much I appreciate your work. I thought it was a hard enough piece for piano, but you took it to another level!
Indeed!
Clara, what a thrilling and utterly brilliant performance! Everything about it, technical virtuosity, registration, expressive interpretation, etc., is of the highest caliber. Congratulations on a spectacular triumph!
Absolutely gorgeous! Such inspiring playing, Clara!!
Thank you, Katelyn! Means so much coming from you!
Beautiful rhythmic sense--the music breathes (it almost floats!)!
You have a phenomenal talent and it’s remarkable how you are able to totally memorize these difficult pieces. Even your registration changes are flowing and artistic! You can look forward to an outstanding musical career!

This is an amazing performance. The footwork is excellent; I’m reminded of the Irish dancers. I’m disappointed you don’t have more subscribers.

This is the first time I hear The Mephisto Waltz on a pipe organ. I can imagine only two organist's who may have: Virgil Fox, and Carlo Curly.
Beautifully done.

WOW!!!
🙌🙌🙌
Dear Clara, that is so amazing your playing. You are really one of the greatest organists I have ever seen. Please tell me, how it is possible that all play by memory? Happy easter and God bless you. Kind regards, Alex.
Franz Liszt would have been highly impressed and influenced by the full color display you put on for this wild, searching piece. Beautiful, fascinating performance . Thank you!
Thank you! This means a lot!
I’m glad. I made this important comment because I believe you are a true musician and I want to emphasize that you should fully believe in yourself and your great imagination. Please play as you really want to all the way and try to be aware of where you may be cautious to do your full ideas because teachers or others have not preferred or even disliked them. You may be fully courageous but if there is any holding back please
let go and do your inner way. I have helped a lot of musicians and I think you’re special.
9:48 and thereafter.. wow 10:09 the lightness👍👍
Dear Clara, thank you for your brilliant performance! The color changing of Registration also absolutely stunning. I would like to try to play your Arrangement. Do you have published sheet music? Or any other option to buy it? I await your answer ❤
Beautiful, but a little eyrie. My mother was a Classical Organist and her name was Claire. Clara and my 18 year old Granddaughter could almost be twins and both are Classical musicians. Further, my youngest Granddaughter also shares the name. Great music and coincidences are always fun!
소리가웅장하네요
Jeepers...kids these days, what they can do!
thank you Michael!!
Liszt apparently were a bit of a Faust, having, according to legend, more than 200 girlfriends. People are attracted to, what resonates. I love the beauty of every single of your performances, which each and every single one is performed with such incredible emotion and musicality. Other makes Faust sound like horror music, and in a sense it is: He were a pagan god of lust and perversion and he subdued those women, which in modern day language is RAPE! You still manage to make this music sound beautiful though. God Bless! The real one: Jesus Christ, God The Father and His send comforter, The Holy Spirit. Blessed Holy Trinity!
