Despite the vote it never happened and became independent a few years later. The USA had too much power after the war and subverted the Empire, and some British politicians just went along with it. The Battle of South Georgia was interesting event. The garrison of 22 Royal Marines were informed that that the Argentinians were going to invade and there would be no rescue or reinforcement, so they were to make a token resistance and then surrender. The 'token' resistance involved shooting down a helicopter and damaging a Argentine warship, before outnumbered and pinned down, the garrison surrendered.
I am english with a welsh father, i always assumed my surname was of welsh descent (thomas) however found out my great grandad is actually from st helena, turns out thomas is by far the most common surname there and a lot more likely that that is where my name comes from, i hope to visit one day and meet people who i am almost certainly related to distantly, amazing that people live on such an isolated island to me
Your surname is from England or Wales, probably Wales. We only colonised St. Helena in 1659, which is 600 years after we had already been given our surnames by the Normans, so your surname can't have originated in St. Helena. Your ancestors already had the Thomas surname before they ever set foot on St. Helena. Thomas is a biblical surname so it most likely originated in several different places in Britain. If your father is descended from St. Helena settlers though then you're almost certainly related to the Thomas' who are still living in St. Helena to one extent or another. If you're interested in surnames then here's a bit of mildly interesting trivia for you: the pronunciation and spelling of surnames has changed over time. For example, my surname is "Taylor" and on the Flodden Windows there are 2 men who also have the surname of Taylor, yet they're both spelt differently: "Taylyer" and "Taylier". That's because surnames weren't standardised until the 20th century. Anyway, since families used to have a semi-unique way of spelling their surname it means that the original spelling of your surname can act as a kind of fingerprint, which means if you can find out how your surname was spelt before it got standardised into "Thomas" then you may be able to more accurately track who your ancestors were and where they came from. Ask your grandparents if you have a family bible and ask if they know where it is/who currently has it. If your family does has a family bible, it will contain the names of your ancestors, and if it's old enough it will also have the original spelling of your surname. But, due to your surname being a biblical name it was probably always spelled like "Thomas" so this method might not work for you. Also, i think it's kind of interesting how the pronunciation of Taylor in the 16th century (Taylier/Taylyer) was much closer to the original (Norman) French "Tailleur".
I somehow never find myself mad about the Tax Havens that these overseas territories have become. Especially as it is explicitly not criminal. People do not like but it is done completely because it is legal. My only gripe is that I cannot do it myself.
I think because the Kingdom established under Aethelstan was dissolved by Cnut the Great in 1016 it is forgivable and not that weird to say it was established by the Normans? Maybe one could say reestablished?
@@jamesyoung9228No, it's still wrong. Whilst Cnut and Edmund Ironside came to an agreement to rule in different parts of England, with Cnut administering everywhere except Wessex, it was on the understanding that when one died, the other would rule the lot, so it was a temporary administrative split of jurisdiction and not the dissolution of an entire nation. By the time William came along, Wessex was administered along with the rest. At best it was a temporary annexation.

Despite the vote it never happened and became independent a few years later. The USA had too much power after the war and subverted the Empire, and some British politicians just went along with it. Other Mediterranean islands that were at one time part of the Empire were Minorca, Cyprus, and the Federation of Ionian Islands ie. Corfu, Kefalonia, Zante.
because the empire was bankrupt and the treasury department was at the balls of the USA because of lend lease (aka Ukraine's future as an American "Trad wife" due to debts and will be subervient)
God save the King!
Great video, thank you.

15:30 I thought you were joking about the argentinian salt mining but I think that's actually true
America should've stayed. I love my country but peak Britannia is so enticing.
Now it's The Sun Never Rise Empire
This was very interesting and helped fill the gaps on a few things for me. Thank you 👍🏻
I am english with a welsh father, i always assumed my surname was of welsh descent (thomas) however found out my great grandad is actually from st helena, turns out thomas is by far the most common surname there and a lot more likely that that is where my name comes from, i hope to visit one day and meet people who i am almost certainly related to distantly, amazing that people live on such an isolated island to me
Your surname is from England or Wales, probably Wales.
Yeh I mean if you can use it to your advantage why not. I would
I’m British and let’s face it, the sun has set all over Europe (mainly the west Europe)
technically...wouldn't you only need one island in the Arctic and one in the Antarctic? midnight sun and all that
I really enjoyed this one callum
Great video, I hope for more like this.
Great video as always
Great channel Callum.
Great video, different than normal but still really cool to learn about all the places
Hold up there... William the Conqueror did not establish the Kingdom of England. The Kingdom of England already existed and he conquered it.
That was a weird part indeed.
I think because the Kingdom established under Aethelstan was dissolved by Cnut the Great in 1016 it is forgivable and not that weird to say it was established by the Normans? Maybe one could say reestablished?
@@jamesyoung9228 re-established would be an acceptable term as the Normans didn't start it but continued it after a time of sleep
@@napoleonfeanor Maybe, but the Norman post-conquest state was so different in form and structure that I’m not so sure.
Sandwich islands for me! left alone and full of sandwiches.
Enjoyed this , well done
His empire may have been a mess, but Charles had a magnificent chin.

Callum I really enjoy your content, learned a few things. I share the same love for the things of old and historia. What I want is old stuff from Britannias rule (maps, posters, whatever). Do you know where a man can find them?
Best empire .. hands down
The Royals love the Pitcairn honey because they are PDF files as well.
God Save The King!
Britannia rules the waves.
I'm pretty sure Ascension island also houses an NSA base as well
Wait until you see this:
Brazil sees the island of South Georgia as a stepping stone to pursue its claim to Anarctica, nieghbouring that of Chile's but disputed with the Argentine and British claims.
Rule Britannia
Meanwhile the guy who invented embassies.
I miss the British empire 💖

i love your sense of humor.
Top video mate. Love the flags - you should make them bigger next time though!
Great work Callum, And thanks for remembering to mention Us Danes regarding nevis and kitts. we are still crying over the loss due to various factors. but we was inbetween a rock and a hard place.
Comfy video man, nicely done.
Brilliant video
The word "Empire" seems inappropriate since the word is also associated with large size and power.
I just bought Pitcairn island honey. When it arrives I will let you know how it is.
Breaking news Pitcairn Iland populacion rizes to 100
When I was sworn into the Canadian Army I swore the oath to the Queen :) felt really good to hold a hand on the bible and swear to fight for the Queen and Country.
11:40 interesting note, Ascension Island is owned by the British but the runway is owned by the US.
No it is leased to the US.
@@timphillips9954 incorrect, we hold real property agreements on many things on the island. All those real property ID's which includes the runway are solely own by the US government. And Real Property literally means real own property.
@@stephen7938 At best tennants as the Brits own the Island
@@timphillips9954 you're quite dense.
@@timphillips9954 Maybe it's kind of like a leasehold property ownership, with an expiration date?
The drawing of all the ships of the Royal navy made me impresed, and a little melancholy too.

Enjoyed watching. Well narrated with great personality (depending if Janet has given birth yet, lol).
