Hi Friends, could we have an SM57 alternative? Today we're checking out the $99 Lewitt MTP 440 DM! To show you what this mic can do, I used it as I would use the SM57 to see if it can hold its own against the industry standard. At only $99, it’s remarkably affordable.

My favorite alternative to an SM57 would be the Heilsound PR30 and PR31 BW (which is the same as the 30, just smaller/more compact with a slight different response in terms of side and rear rejection). The PR30 just won out in every shootout Vs. a slew of dynamics here for cloning my amps via profiles in my Kemper (used in blend of three mics with an Advanced Audio Microphones CM49, which is an M49 style mic, and a Shure KSM 353 ED, which beat most heavy hitter ribbons on hand, including Royers, AEA, and Coles, etc.). There's just something "special" about the Heilsound PR30, I almost can't believe how much I prefer it to an SM57 on most sources, but lately it really tends to win by a large margin for me.

Quick question for you, I've just been asked to record a choir during their performance in a few weeks time, I've not been able to go and check out the venue yet (but will be in a few days). What would you suggest I look out for while checking out the venue to figure out the best place to put mics etc, I'm under the impression this church is fairly large but am told no in house PA or anything like that.
Thanks in advance dude, keep it up

    • @Producelikeapro

It sounds really good Warren, thanks. I would have really liked to hear the tracks solo, and also an A-B comparison of a 57 and the Lewitt on the acoustic and electric. Given a choice, miking a guitar amp and bass amp for music in an Alt. Country style, (think Ryan Adams, Jason Isbell) which mic would you pick, SM57 or the Lewitt MTP440?

I'd say the 2 budget mics that have really impressed me are the Neewer NW-700 and the Samson R21S. The Neewer is a pretty basic condenser mic that you can grab for less than 30 bucks but does a great job at capturing vocals with some great detail. I've been using it for about a year now and it does the job quite well.
And well, the R21S is around the same price, but it's a dynamic cardioid mic. It was my first vocal mic, actually and I've been able to use it for over 4 years with no problems. It's quite versatile for recording even guitars and strings, but it'll never beat a SM57.
Great video, Warren! Greetings from Chile!
Ps: Hopefully I'll win one of those Lewitt mics ;)

Sounds "marvelously well" to me. Buuuut are they nearly indestructible? I've seen one (1) 57 break in nearly twenty years. And they've withstood abuse and neglect that would trash most competitor products. I believe that's some of the reason they're such a go-to well respected workhorse. I've even run them as drum overheads on a live gig in an emergency. They did great.
.....then again, a good mic for $100 you can't go wrong either way.

  • @adamfox9651

Would you say this sounds the same as a 57, or does it have a very different "character" to the sound? (I can't say myself, because I've only owned "low-budget" clones.)
BTW I can hear a some Brian May influence in your guitar playing. I'm surprised you didn't whip out that tasty Red Special for this.

I still love using my old Sennheisers much better than the newer improved ones... Can you really make a better spoon or fork? That being said, I'm sure its a fine mic, and its always nice to be a little different...
