  • Pupils from Uffculme School marked the end of their year eleven with a glamorous prom night at Oake Manor on Thursday, June 29. The event was a chance for the students to dress up, have fun and say goodbye to their classmates and teachers after a challenging year of exams and disruptions.
The head girl of Uffculme School, Erin Oliver, said: “It’s very exciting to be here tonight, and feels a little surreal. We’ve watched our predecessors go to prom and now it’s our turn. Everyone looks so gorgeous and it’s amazing to see how everyone has grown up since year seven to year eleven.”
She added that she liked the tradition of having proms, as it was a way to celebrate and feel good about themselves. She also revealed that it took her all day to get ready for the occasion.
Ruby McCoombe, another head girl, agreed that it was a big task to prepare for the prom night. She said: “There’s appointments, everything else, and lots of money spent to get ready. It’s a big task. We’ve also got presents for the teachers. We’re all now looking forward to the future.”
The head boy of Uffculme School, Harry Hann, said: “It’s a great way for everyone to come together after a tough year, and exam stint, and we can come together, enjoy ourselves and finally celebrate.”
He praised the effort that everyone made with their arrivals, which included tractors, sports cars, classic cars and other eye-catching vehicles. He said: “Everyone has really pushed the boat out.”
The prom night was also a special occasion for Alan Blackburn, who attended the event as his last as headteacher of Uffculme School before moving to a new position. He said: “Reflecting back, it’s 23 years since we had our first prom at the school, and having seen so many of these people go on and develop and have great lives, that’s what we continue to wish for, for this group too.”
He expressed his pride and admiration for the students, who he said had shown resilience and character in overcoming the challenges of the pandemic. He said: “As we saw them come up, one after another, you can see the pride they have, presenting themselves, we are so proud of them.”
He concluded by giving his message to the students: “Be confident in yourselves, you’ve already come through an awful lot, you have so much resilience, so much character, you will do amazingly well with your qualifications, and I hope you make the most of the great life you have in front of them.”
