I played the Moog One when I went down to the Moog Factory in Asheville. Amazing synth. My friends where like, can we go already? They wanted to pub crawl, and I wanted to stay there with the Moogs until they kicked me out. I now own 4 Moogs, but not the One. The Matriarch is on my list to get eventually to add to my other Moog family synths. That and the Subharmonicon. Regardless one synth that’s a little out of reach for me that I always wanted was the OB6. I’ll take the rack version.
❤️ all of these. So glad inexpensive alternatives exist. But I’m also glad all of these heavy hitters are being produced. We had the pleasure to try out a Moog One in Nantes. Such a inspiring sound.
If the Matriarch had patch memory...I would be prepared to pay an extra 1000 for it and just sell most everything else. Watch Lisa Bella Donna play it and it will blow you away...of course she doesnt need patch memory.
Agreed. I will purchase one new synth this year and I've been having a hard time choosing between the Subsequent 37 (for the patch saving) and the Matriarch (for everything else).
@@BoBeats would be nice if you buy a Kijimi from Black Corporation for me, once you've paid off the Moo-g, of course ;-) Man I love that Borg cube just for its look^^
Digitone Keys. I’m drooling over it. Personally, I dig the design...some people don’t like it, but it retains that DT/DN form factor, which I feel would greatly help with getting the workflow down.
@@BoBeats I suppose it depends on how you use the synth - perhaps most Digitone Keys users don't play it in a traditional keyboard instrument way so much - but having nearly all of the controls to one far side means that, if you wish to make adjustments on the fly, it can be cumbersome to do so with your right hand. That's not a big deal for monosynths, but for polysynths, it may matter depending on what you're playing. Also, having the display off to the far side isn't as good as having it directly in front of you, because of the head-turning required to look at it. Another question is not what is wrong with the form factor, but what (if anything) is right. Considering the Scandinavian design ethos of form following function, what functionality does this form factor provide the user over a more traditional "display front and center, controls on either side" layout? As someone who values the importance of design minutiae to make things as good as possible and not just "good enough," I feel that, without a reasonable explanation, the form factor seems more like a financial decision than a functional one. BTW, considering two of the three synths are around 2.000€, and you own a Eurorack, they aren't really that far out of the realm of possibility.
If I could do it all again, I'd have got a waldorf quantum earlier rather than spending more on multiple cheaper synths. It covers so many bases and covers them well. Just an issue of having the patience to wait.
The only thing I'm gassing for right now, is the Toraiz Squid. Even though Pioneer screwed everyone over with updates (or the lack of) on the SP16. I still want the Squid. Thankfully it's not expensive.
Dream synths: pretty much any Black Corporation synth, especially the Kijimi. See Ricky Tinez's video on it, absolutely amazing. My realistic dream synth is a Moog Grandmother. I guess at some point I could sell some monos to finance a part of it.
I went to Sweetwater's Gearfest over the weekend. I played all these and a quite a few more. Great synths! I'd love a big Eurorack synth. But the modules would put me in Moog One (16 voice) price territory. So that... a nice Eurorack is my unaffordable synth.
If you paired a Kyra, a sequencer (probably Digitakt or Deluge), and a midi keyboard, but used nothing else... would that count as a minimalist setup? Regardless, that's pretty much what I want. A successor to the Virus is long overdue. I wonder if I'll be able to save up enough by the time it actually comes out.
Was more of a "if a tree falls with no one around, does it make a sound?" kind of question... more about the definition of words than about the reality of the thing being discussed. On the one hand, having just two relatively little boxes to compose on might normally be considered minimalist, compared to a whole table or whole studio full of gear. On the other hand, those are two incredibly powerful little boxes. There's kind of a blurry line between a Kyra and, for example, Pigments with a midi controller.
For me there are a lot. Recently spending $530 USD on a Deepmind 12 was a major purchase that left me panicking that I went to far until I got it and heard it and let the pads ease that tension. I'd really want an OP-1 for the portability and features but I also like letting my students play my synths as encouragement/rewards and I know they'd enjoy it for the sampler and silly visuals like the cow etc. and I'm not going to lie I get a kick out of those things too lol. Thinking even bigger though, there's a ton to choose from, maybe a Yamaha Montage but thinking even bigger definitely that Moog One like you want lol
Thank you .Yes definitely the MOOG ONE .Perhaps a seven year goal .Better to keep expanding the euro rack because it can be done progressively .I am getting into the MASSIVE X .Very interesting ! And good on CPU .
The Reface CS is way under rated. There are many things it cannot do, but what it can do, it does really well. The pads it can do are worth the price of admission IMO.
I’m a complete noob who still barely knows anything about synthesis, and I think any synth would be wasted on me just trying to learn, but that Moog Matriarch is definitely something I’d lust over.
I'm sure money's always an issue to some extent, but what about the other limited resource we could always use more of? I mean space of course! It's about all I can do to make room for two synths right now, so the idea of throwing something like a Moog One into the mix... it'd have to be in a weird spot. Or, I could sell stuff I don't want so much anymore and viola, I now have Moog space AND Moog money.
I wouldn't necessarily go for new gear as my first choice, it would have to be either a CS80, or a Jupiter 8. Second choice, do they still make the Schmidt? Thirdly, I'd prefer the Matriarch to the Moog One, but having a Moog One sat in your studio would look better, wouldn't it?

Many of us have made the mistake of buying several cheaper synths because we couldn't afford the one we really wanted, when their total cost probably rivaled the cost of our heart's desire...save up and get what you want.
I reached a hard limit space and budget wise on my synth collection. Eurorack and modular is even more expensive. Thankful for my Elektrons which are my favorite synths for the creative process.
While I'm saving my beer tokens for a TI2, I'm happily making do with Pigments, Spectral and Codex in the box. Anything that you can throw your own wavetables at, and play with like a mad scientist, is fine by me. And it's nice to chill out a bit, make music with what ya got, and let the random synth bargains drop into your lap in the fullness of time, via kismet and happenstance. That's how most of my most-used synths and processors have showed up over the years. Stress-free living for the win. I used to work in a music store, and I saw a constant stream of people obsessed with maxing their credit cards on the latest expensive wizzbang tech. Which they would then sell at a loss a few months later, in order to buy the newest shiny. Good for my commission, but a bit tragic in the grand scheme of things.
Hi Bo, I have always wanted Omnishphere (and am fortunate to have a copy). With the Panorama P6 kbd, however with the latest version of Omisphere I can not fully integrate some physical hard synths . All I need to do now is work out what will be the best synth to start with. I am leaning toward Moog or something in that genre. Any suggestion. I think my budget will be (circa) 2k Thanks for the vids Bo
I am not Bo but just want to share my experience. A mono or Poly synth? For a poly I think the Prophet Rev2, Sequential Prophet 6, OB6 are good options if you want that analogue sound. Desktop: Novation Peak is also amazing. Good monosynth: Moog Subsequent 37 or the Arturia Matrixbrute. A poly in combination with a mono synth is always a good thing. They all sound good and they all have pros and cons. All comes down to the sound you like. The market today is so saturated, that it's hard to make a decision. Good luck.
Thanks for your reply SynthPimp very helpful. I was going to mention Prophet and OB. In fact, I think OB has more warmth (from memory...). Maybe I could split my budget a Moog and OB hardware modules and MIDI to my P6 kbrd. Actually I am thinking that perhaps Synth modules may be the way to go. Especially now that Omnisphere has full HW integration (best of both worlds). That is if I can get them in modules. NB - A poly synth
@@alephproject0.170 You can buy an OB6 module for around 2K and that will be a real good choice. It sounds fat and warm because when you add resonance you will not lose bottom end.
Some worthy choices to be sure. I know for myself, well, the things I would probably do for a Buchla Music Easel far outweigh what I'd do for a Klondike Bar.
The Matriarch at $2,200 and the Kyra at $2,500 are not really that expensive, at least not compared to high-end workstations like the Montage and Fantom. If a Matriarch is too expensive, you might consider a Behrenger Poly-D, which has similar specs, a very fat filter and sound and a stereo chorus. It's also a four-voice paraphonic analog.but only costs about $700--one third the price of a Matriarch. I like the Kyra, but for that money, I'd buy an Iridium instead. For a lot less than either, you could get a Blofeld, which sounds great and is quite powerful. These are less than $600 new, and are commonly available used even cheaper. As for the Moog One, it's quite nice but I couldn't justify spending that much, especially the 16 voice version. I'd probably get a Nord Lead A1 (which is virtual analog, but very convincing) instead. This is 24 voice and 4-part multi-timbral. At $2000, it might still be out of your price range, but it's a fraction of the Moog One's cost. Or you might consider a Novation Peak, which is less powerful (and lacks a keyboard), but is only about $1,400.
The Kyra looks like it has an amazing potential, not well realised in any demo I have heard ... but ... I am really interested in its arrival ... In the meantime I do have a synth with 16 voice polyphony from 128 oscillators that sounds amazing and available/affordable ... ... Four Modal Skulpts poly-chained!
I can't afford the OB-6, Prophet 6 and the Prophet 5. It would take me over 12 months of savings to buy a synth like that, but I bought many other synth, Moog Minitaur, Moog Sub Phatty, Moog Sub 37, Behringer Model D, K-2, Monopoly etc etc to many to name them all. I had 20+ synths and I sold half to buy a Sequential REV2, because my Prophet 08 is my favourite synth of all time and I have enough money to spend on any of the Sequential synth, but I don't know what would be my best choice. I'm going to take my time, because this money can only be spend ones.
Korg mono/poly, always want one but the prices are typically ludicrous, plus no midi on most and if it does the price is much higher. But yeah the matriarch is pretty sweet also.
My analog desires are mostly fulfilled, but if it existed, I'd want a digital synth which (in addition to FM) offers very high-quality orchestral sounds like those used by film composers. For some reason such sound libraries seem to be available as PC libraries only. Why can hw keyboards not load such libraries (or can they?)? I have no idea why even very expensive hw keyboards like korg kronos tend to sound a bit lame in many of their instruments: it's not like a few SSD drives to store really high-quality samples are insanely expensive nowadays, especially compared to the price of a complete instrument. Modx/Montage and perhaps prophet xl may be the best ones available at the moment, so in the absence of my dream machine, I'll happily lust for a montage 8.
Bo concerning the KYRA you can pick them up second hand for a £1000 these days. That's how much i paid for mine boxed and in mint condition. Well worth the 💰 money.
My dream synth that i am jealous because you hung out with it is the udo super six.i cant afford it but i am going to scrimp ,save, sell unused gear, whatever it takes to get it.

I would love an original EMU synth that was used by famous electronic musicians back in the day as well as a first generation Korg MS20 not the chinese made ones now.

Am I the only one who shed a tear when the first cord came out of the Moog 1?
More like, 300 synths I can't afford. 😁
Arp2600 version with the moog filter before theygot in hot water or moog 3p with a extra sequencer box
Korg mono/poly, always want one but the prices are typically ludicrous, plus no midi on most and if it does the price is much higher. But yeah the matriarch is pretty sweet also.
The synth I want, and surpasses my budget ...Waldorf Quantum.
Nice. How about a video of 3 Amazing Synths I CAN Afford?
Maybe some ebay bargains like DX-11, Kawai K1 or Ensoniq Mirage?
Thats a good topic!
the schmidt synthesizer !
I totally dislike the Moog One. Price. I mean, it's price. The rest is just perfect.
It's about time to discover the Things we already have.
Sequential Prophet X.
Bo concerning the KYRA you can pick them up second hand for a £1000 these days. That's how much i paid for mine boxed and in mint condition. Well worth the 💰 money.
Its definitely gone down in price! Moog One on the other hand damn, its the price of a good car now
@@BoBeats I agree it's criminal 😬
Simply buy Moog stuff by getting rid of the Elektron stuff.
😱😱😱😱
My dream synth that i am jealous because you hung out with it is the udo super six.i cant afford it but i am going to scrimp ,save, sell unused gear, whatever it takes to get it.
we'll pray so you can afford them
Can’t even afford the Matrix Brute.... had I unlimited money I’d buy a Brute and a Moog One (16 voice). Pretty sure I wouldn’t have a need for any other synths after that....... (not that that would stop me from getting more :P )
i guess after one of that standart you dont realy need more^^
I would love an original EMU synth that was used by famous electronic musicians back in the day as well as a first generation Korg MS20 not the chinese made ones now.
Would've been nice if the avg. prices were included. Ya know, so we can decide if we can afford them or not.
Prices change so i almost never include them. Someone watches a video today and a Matriarch is X. Watch it in 2 years and I get spammed by comments ”no its Y!!”
Liked this video based purely on the wheel of time reference 😝
Analogue Solutions Colossus
hey Bo. This is a little off topic but seeing your kid in the video makes me wonder how you deal with your kids wanting to play with your expensive synthesizers? I know its a issue for me but I cant resist letting them go crazy with my gear some times.
i simply don’t let them. But i have a few cool kids friendly synths they can jse
@@BoBeats interesting. Any good suggestion on kid friendly gear?
Dato, Blipblox, yamaha cs
Never thought about the reface series. Thanks for the suggestions, from one gear head parent to another.
the moog matriarch isnt that excpensive compared to the moog one? In norway the moog one cost Nok 90k and the matriarch Nok 21,5k. im prob selling my grandmother for around Nok 8,5k so i can get its big brother :)
i was thinking about getting the moog one, but failed to justify the return on investment since my music is only a hobby :(
refreshing.
Oberheim 8-Voice
Would trade my soul for it.
Vintage CS80 in good shape!
I GAS's over a Moog One for weeks and cried because I can't afford it lol I feel it
EMS VCS3
I like that mother! And dude, sell a few things and you can afford it!
The Schmidt!
Top 3 Synths I can't afford :
Waldorf Kyra
DSI Prophet XL
Steinway B211... yeah I know it's not a synth...
But I'm gonna get the Waldorf and DSI anyway... No matter how hard I have to gig around to save that big... Because you see, my friend, life is a one way slide... ;)
Waldorf Quantum too... 😪😪😪😪
I dont understand the 'cant afford' bit. The Kyra is £2k max. Its not that expensive and Bo seems a pretty well off guy. Surely this is tongue in cheek😺
i wish i made good money of youtube, sadly not the case ♥️
#NeedAnewHouseForMoreSynths ? ;)
