Andy is my "go- to" guide for hearing the Truth in the message of Jesus by bringing the pages of history to life and how current it is for us today.
As I listen to this series, I felt compelled to share someone's circumstance that WOWed me when she shared it:
Someone I was getting to know as a friend, shared a part of her life's story with me. I never forgot it.
As a child in the early 50's, she and her little sister had been abandoned and tossed into the foster care system from her age of 5 to 13. Their older siblings, 3 girls and a boy, went to other famly. She remembered the separation was traumatic
The 2 sent to foster care suffered extreme cruelty by foster "parents" for years-- right from the first day. They were'nt allowed to cry or they'd get spanked or hit. One place after the other, in 3 different homes, they were mentally and sexually abused in each one and nobody noticed.. They were restricted to one room at times and punished if they could not hold out for bathroom priviledges. Food was restricted to only 5 things. She said she didnt know what an apple or banana tasted like until she was 13. As she spoke I was shocked how they were allowed to be homeschooled under the noses of State Officials at the time. Ive learned alot since then. Of course they were never taken to church and had never witnessed anyone who lived in relationship of any kind of faith. She continued with the timeline of her experiences until she got to the time when she and her little sister were locked in the closet waiting for their punishment of torture that was sure to come for trying to sneak out of the house. She described how dark it was and how tight she held her sister who was shaking so bad and how scared she was too. She said she just prayed for God to take them.
I stopped her short--- and I said "Wait!!!" "How did you think God even exsisted, or think He might even care about you ? Where did that come from? How did you think ANY entity could possibly exsist outside that house to place your hope on? How could you hope God would hear you?
Her answer? Simply put. She said " How could I not? That's all I had."
She passed away 5 years ago but her story stays with me as an example of Hope prevailing under the circumstances. She believed when she had no reason to.

I've long followed the teaching in my heart that God is "uncircumscribable" ("aperigraphtos"), that is to say that nothing which can be written or drawn or said with words can ever in any way limit the power of God and his ineffable mysteries. I've never wondered why some circumstance or other happened to me and not to someone else because I've always just assumed that this life was meant for me in particular. But the reliance on this mystery sometimes led me to the purest, disappointed atheism, for I rather believed there was no God than to believe God was somehow cruel... on account of the misfortunes of others... if that makes sense. But when it seemed that everything else failed me, I determined to find out about God, about why he even has a name among us for all these millenia.
