This song is straight to my number 1, bumping Norway out of the spot! Portugal sends such incredible pieces every year ❤ everything about this song, staging, lyrics, voice, everything is just PURE ART! It’s absolutely remarkable.
I am a long time, VERY AVID Eurovision fanatic from the US (not Portuguese, don’t speak the language). I think this is an amazing entry for the contest.

The way I feel the song is:
The silence (when she sings acapella): Means the struggle with herself, the loneliness.
Then come the dancers which seems to be the bad feelings or her "demons"
The chorus: Her strenght/bravery comes back and she wants to fight these " demons" inside her and becomes stronger.
The strings part: She comes with a decision where she tells that she can prove to herself that she can be what she wants to be and starts really fighting "the demons".
The scream "Grito" (climax): When she finally can defeat those "demons" ( you see them falling in the choreo).
Then the silence again: where she feels better and says she transformed herself and says that she is the flame that is still burning.
    Pure art and beautiful.
That is what I understood by the instrumental and lyrics.
A masterpiece that only portuguese and those who want to understand will completely be in total harmony with this song.
Well that was my point of view.
Cheers and thanks for your honest comment. 😉

If you don’t speak Portuguese, well done! You’re probably the only one here (apart from Portuguese speakers) who actually understood EVERYTHING and the meaning on this masterpiece.
I think it’s such a lame excuse to people keep saying they didn’t like it or didn’t feel it because they don’t understand the language. It’s getting quite annoying really.
Ffs, there’s a lot more to it than just the language. But what can I say, not everyone can really appreciate art, specially nowadays.
      Thank you! 🫶🏼

    IOLANDA - SCREAM ( translation)
    I heard, I felt
    The body to carry
    We continue like this
    One and the other
    One and the other
    One and the other
    I'm free falling
Let me know when you get there
    I surrender here
    Little by little
Long steps stuck in the match
I want to let go of what left me hurt
I ask the mother star to make the day
    Born again
I transformed every verse of me
    And give in to courage
    That still burns
    It still burns
Hit the light on your chest and open it
I am a flame that still burns
    It still burns
    It still burns
Today I want to prove myself
That I can be whatever I want
Bring together those who love me at a table
Forgive anyone who wanted to see me suffer
    They don't fool me! (No!)
    I'm every size
I still remember when I was little
    And dreamed first
Long steps stuck in the match
Today I let go of what left me hurt
And I ask the mother star to make the day
    Born again
I transformed every verse of me
    And give in to courage
    That still burns
    It still burns
Hit the light on your chest and open it
I am a flame that still burns
    It still burns
    It still burns
I am a flame that still burns
    It still burns
I am a flame that still burns
    It still burns
    Burn
    Burn
    Burn
I transformed every version of myself
    And give in to courage
    That still burns
    It still burns
Hit the light on your chest and open it
I am a flame that still burns

I agree with you, it doesn't matter who wins, to me this is a festival of music, even though it's a competition, I really enjoy listening and viewing all the performers, well, some more than others, but in the end, we need to remember this is a TV show. This is a soft but powerful performance-crafted in a very contemporary music style. The acapella and the guitar strings at the beginning are so beautiful, with an enchanting chorus throughout the whole song, especially towards the end, at minute 9:35 of your video. This is an extraordinary song, from the lighting, camera angles, and her dancers that help create the mood...will it go through the final? Who knows, but with so many up-tempo songs, Yolanda will get the audience's attention and may have a good chance of going through to the final. I can hardly wait to see her perform on that big Malmö stage.

We know that most of the votes are moved by pseudo political regional willing/cultural, statistical or whatever you want to call it. Some of the 10 to 12 points has already a destiny from the start.
What I saw until now, and only judging performance, music and lyrics this music is one of the top 5 songs. This year there's too much trash, no music, circus songs, no Eurovision songs... That sounds scary about it. It seems that it is no longer a music contest.

Not to disagree or disrespect, but the way you're reviewing this song which is not a "banger" or more like an artistic performance, it seems you're always waiting for a "drop", which I get it, u seem to be working on dj or probably connected to that type of music.

We always have the question... what is a a song for eurovision? Rock Hallelujah was a perfect example of what people say it wasnt a eurovision song or genre. now if we gonna talk about the song structure that people have the tendecy to like more... or because are more used to... Now, eurovision fans are not used to listen this kind of songs that doesnt follow the "predictable" traditional song structure. Starts slow, and the beat goes faster and faster till a climax comes, screaming and madness till it ends. This song doesnt follow that. Sometimes it helps, sometimes it sinks. Will Eurovisions fans sink or navegate this song? we do not know...

I appreciate your honesty. The dancers are translating the lyrics with emotional and sentimental expressions. Here is the ANALYSIS and Lyrics, "Grito" (Scream) from Iolanda, Portugal choice:
"Grito" (SCREAM), presents a compelling narrative of resilience, transformation, and self-empowerment. The song uses the metaphor of fire to symbolize the undying spirit of the protagonist, emphasizing themes of endurance, healing, and self-realization.
    Themes like:
Vulnerability and Surrender: (sense of awareness and sensitivity, possibly hinting at the anticipation of change or the buildup of emotional energy. Speaks to letting go of control, a leap of faith into the unknown. This surrender isn't about giving up but about embracing the process of transformation).
Liberation: "I want to let go of what left me hurt" is a clear desire to release past pains and burdens. This act of letting go is necessary for healing and moving forward.
Renewal: for instance in asking the "mother star to make the day rise again" symbolizes a plea for rebirth, a fresh start, and the hope that comes with a new day.
Transformation: "I transformed every verse of me" indicates profound personal growth and change. The individual is not the same as before; She has evolved through her experiences.
Persistence: The repeated phrase "It still burns" emphasizes ongoing struggle and resilience. Despite challenges, her spirit and determination remain unquenched.
Self-assertion: "Today I want to prove myself / That I can be whatever I want" reflects a strong sense of self-belief and ambition. She is determined to define her own identity and future.
Forgiveness: "Forgive anyone who wanted to see me suffer" shows maturity and emotional liberation. Forgiveness is presented as a step towards healing and empowerment.
Resilience: The imagery of being a "flame that still burns" throughout the song symbolizes resilience in the face of adversity. She continues to shine and endure, regardless of past pains and challenges.
Self-empowerment: The journey from vulnerability to strength, from darkness to light, encapsulates the theme of self-empowerment. She actively transforms her pain into power, asserting control over her destiny.
Healing and Growth: The song portrays healing as an active and dynamic process. It's about moving through pain, embracing change, and growing stronger in the process.
Iolanda's 'Grito' (Scream), is a powerful anthem of perseverance, self-discovery, and empowerment. It encourages listeners to embrace their vulnerabilities, let go of the past, and ignite their inner strength to face the future with courage and hope.

So, Iolanda is this kinda under-the-radar singer in Portugal. I guess not everyone's caught onto her yet, but that's definitely changing. I don't know much about her, just that she's dropped one EP so far, but i think her vibe is a mix of Pop and R&B. She's got such a killer voice! It's all smoky and husky, which is such a refreshing change from the usual stuff out there. She's even gearing up for Eurovision and promised to amp up her game from what we saw in the national contest. As a Portuguese person myself, obviously we're always rooting for our own music, and it's tough when we're vibing to something and others just don't get it or don't feel the same way about it. But hey, that's part of the game. Anyway, thanks for your opinion and cheers from Portugal!

Thanks man. The lyrics talked about how she struggles with her demons and how she win the battle. The Scream (o grito) never is mentioned but she performed a liberation Scream. And one think for sure the dancers all motions and the light are soo tangle in synchrony with the melody. I'm very proud, and I didn't knew her. I became a fan just for a few seconds. Many of us, since the COVID quarantine are still struggling with our demons. Like she said our sparkling is still burning, the light touches our chest and open it.

I think your thought process is fascinating, mate.
As for how well this does in eurovision, most Portuguese don't care. We just don't.
You see, we've spent decades trying to play the eurovision game, sending increasingly shittier songs because they were "eurovision-friendly". Nothing good came out of it. At some point we decided it was enough. How come, we thought, there's so much wonderful music in Portugal and we're sending this shit to Eurovision, trying to get a good result that never comes? This was so much the overall feeling that we massively voted for the most joke entry we could come up with (Homens da Luta), knowing full well it would be destroyed in the voting and the jury but feeling entirely represented by it anyway. The guys running the Portuguese selection eventually took note, stopped to rethink the whole thing and started over. They decided to approach it this way: screw the competition. Not entirely, but yeah, screw it. Mostly. Whatever comes, comes, and if it doesn't come, so be it. Let's just use Eurovision to show what we can do, i.e., let's send good stuff, stuff we actually like. Let's promote the Portuguese musical scene out there.
The next year, Salvador Sobral won the whole thing. With a song that is absolutely not "eurovision-friendly". And since then we've been getting much better results than we used to, overall. Plus, and I don't know this for a fact, as I don't have the numbers, but I strongly suspect it to be the case, I'd bet this has been doing great things for Portuguese music abroad.
Iolanda made a very good song and sings it beautifully. She'll be showing how good our music can be. All is great, then, regardless of what comes out of it.

Seeing it from another perspective, this year's entries are 90% "clownery"... there's barely anything like this, which might make it stand out. Personally watching this years entries i just started rolling my eyes half way through cause it's all the same sh*t, they sound virtually the same, look the same and tbh they'll likely blend with each other. This year I don't think upbeat will mean winning potential bc it's all samey samey

I believe the most important question is whether Portugal intends to win the ESC. While it would be great if they did, Portugal has a history of not winning (except for Salvador Sobral) and often not even making it to the final. However, Portugal sees the ESC as an opportunity to show their roots, culture, and language to the world and provide a platform for young artists like Iolanda. Winning is not the main goal, rather making a difference and leaving a lasting artistic impression matters.
Unfortunately, the ESC has lost its appeal in Portugal as it has become the same mainstream and shallow event year after year. Art and deep emotions are no longer prioritized.
I couldn't agree more when you say that Grito is a good song, but not good enough for the Eurovision Song Contest.

No offense and I appreciate your honest opinion, but you were making several different comments and had different opinions throughout the entire song because you kept pausing it without actually letting the song flow. This song you either listen to it on one go, or you make a stop in the middle, not plenty of them. You stopped at key parts of the song as well. I understand that this might not be your type and I respect it, but you didn’t let yourself actually listen to the song. You thought it was a ballad and guess what: it isn’t! It’s a mix. I understand that you think it might be forgotten in the middle of so many upbeat songs, but it will only make it stand out. I hope they keep everything as it is, because it works perfectly.

Thank you for your sincerity. To massage the ego and look for likes, there are the other UA-camrs. Still, that, if they were really honest, they would gain much more from engagement because people tend to criticize more and would certainly fall into these videos. But it's the society we have.
This song represents us well is the important thing. Every year bringing quality is the most important thing. RTP is not interested in winning the Eurovision, it is a very large investment and with the current economic and political situation there is no interest in it. I think Iolanda gives more value to criticisms like yours. Hug

"Its probably a meaningful song..." 😅 if there is no meaning, should it really be called a song? Who cares if others are upbeat? U gotta convey ur own message, comparisons are not what u should set your standards to. By that logic we would only have upbeat songs, that doesnt make sense. In any case, different opinions are a healthy thing. Portugal also does not care if they win or not, they just try to keep music alive!😅😅. Cheers

I really liked your opinion. I prefer honest ones to those who just like everything. And I also agree. I don't know if it will pass. If it does the jury will probably like it, the televote not so much. It's the kind of song you need to know the lyrics to have it catch your soul. Otherwise it's a well sung artistic niche entry. But I like we're sendind this one.

I dont have an issue with your opinion but to the way you react. You listen to a very short chunk of the song like 5 to 10 seconds then you go on rants of one to two minutes. How can you even feel.the song if you break so often? It is one thing to spread SHORT coments during the song, that's part and parcel of a reaction but the coment should be shorter than the part of the song and then leave the rants and detailed coments to after the song has played so you by then have a global feel and understanding of the complete song. This is like measuring the performance of a car by comenting on the work of each part of the car that each last longer thsn the test drive itself. It is mistaking the forest for the trees. Thst is the problem with your reaction: you are mistaking the forwst for the trees and mistaking the measures the manigold for itself.

Probably the most boring reaction I’ve ever watched. It looks that you love more listening to yourself than listening to the songs.
Also when you referred to upbeat being the trend it’s already manipulative.
This is my feeling about your reviews.
