Video Game Music Samples! The video where I dare to ask if Billie EIilish took from a Plant Game, if Logic took from Mario, and most notably, when will Rihanna take from Undertale? Thanks to many of your suggestions, we're back talking about a really interesting topic - popular songs taking music from video games!

No, it is not Jolyne
ERRORS: On screen has an error - XO TOUR LIFE is by Lil Uzi Vert, not XXXTentacion. Must have copied CAME2KILLs text and forgot to change the artist
ALSO, turns out Navi in the Skrillex was someone hired to sound exactly like Navi! They are Salamimeats on the website formerly know as Twitter.
Was just about to ask 😂
To be fair, I'm like 80% certain she intentionally styled herself after Jolyne

I'm still hoping that one day, there will be a new pop song that uses the same baseline riffs as Waluigi Pinball. That'd be epic.

Trying to monetize a video like this genuinely sounds like a nightmare, huge dubs to the patreon backers
I mean I'm constantly anxious of a claim for sure. But in my experience if you play very short enough clips you're usually safe, typically 4 to 5 bars of a song. I do not recommend it however lol

Your increase in quality and production is amazing, can't wait to see more content from you on this kind of level.
If you want more instances of Lil Uzi Vert sampling from video games, the original version of Secure The Bag used the Clock Tower Factory theme from Super Monkey Ball 2.

Man, I remember hearing a Portuguese pop/rap song from a radio and the melody sounded exactly like Chemical Plant Zone from Sonic the Hedgehog 2. The melody didn't just last for a few seconds - _it was the whole song._ The verses, the chorus, everything. I can't find it anywhere anymore. The lyrics didn't make references to Sonic from what I remember, though I didn't understand them very well.
12:05 got an actual laugh outta me instead of the usual blowing air out of my nose laugh
The Metal Gear Solid V trailer theme was a sample in itself, being from Elegia by New Order.
It wasn't even a sample. It's literally just the song being played in the trailer.
I got such fucking whiplash when he called it the MGSV trailer theme lmao

when i see other metal gear fans just straight up act like 80 iq morons
Not only does Aurora sample Coconut Mall, but so does Puffle Party's main theme- I believe Chris Hendricks even admitted to the deliberately similar opening.
(Same goes with Mystic Cave Zone and the Box Dimension.)
At least, they seem to be a Billie Eilish situation.
wait what does mystic cave zone sample?
@@purpleprawler9286 No, Box Dimension is a Major Key modification of Mystic Cave Zone.
Technically the same key signature, different mode.
@@amesstarline5482 oh k
5:25 the word you're looking for when it's not a sample but they use the same melody is called interpolation
13:15
Counterpoint: Goldeneye Watch theme was already a 100% banger, therefore it was not sampled, but simply used for its original purpose.
this is edited in such a fever dream manner that i cant keep up or understand wtf is going on, yet its enjoyable
Exact sample or not, I'm always listening for these "musical allusions" - I play a lot of jazz, and this is way more commonplace and acceptable in that world, and it shows partly how the artists think, but also ideas they wish to evoke in the listener who knows the allusion. It's really interesting, and I think it's really cool that you can take certain musical motifs and trace them back through time to other songs
An interesting example of sampling in music for video games can be Chirp from Minecraft and Orb of Dreamers from LittleBigPlanet. Both songs start with the same sample from an old electronic instrument. The songs go in compeletly different directions but the start is uncomfortably similiar.
they both have been on my mind since ive played both games a long time ago. That sample gives off a very nostalgic feeling
This same sample is also used at the end of “Modern Day Cain” by I Dont Know How But They Found Me. It comes from the Bossa Nova Style Programming Disk for the 1970 Mattel Optigan.
@@cuppahotnoodles You know what else samples the Optigan? Zipper by Brockhampton. Absolute banger.
I love ur monetreme pfp
I remember that, but the truth is that the sample comes from the same instrument that they used to make these songs, since it had like prerecorded ones on that specific model or whatever. Put me at ease, honestly
I’d never thought I’d see CES CRU recognition 10:38
Same! Was very cool to see!
I was super happy to see that too! Love Seven Chakras and I miss their early Strange days!
8:03 what's more is this track is used throughout many mario RPG's to give a sense of absolute "forboding foreshadowing" like something's around the corner. I swear I've heard this so many times on Bowsers Inside Story that I was like "No, not another giga bowser fight where I have to scream my lungs out, NO NO NO!!!"
I'm ao sorry that thumbnail really looks like Jolyne XD
That new intro has been great! It’s super simple, but because of that, it kinda fits Alax’s new minimalistic style of videos
9:43 Yo why did Schoolboy Q lock Toad up in his basement 😭
Abracadavre isn't the name for the COD Zombies theme thought, that merely is the name of the easter egg song on Ascension that incorporates a part of the song "Damned", the actual name for the gamemode theme.
10:25 also sounds like the main theme of trauma team for the wii.
I like that Brandish popped up in the end...because Gadobadorrer is LITERALLY what Megalovania is inspired by. No no, not Megalomania from LAL, that's simply the song he wanted to use instead for Halloween Hack (and thus, was named after).
This is pretty crystal clear when you realize the guy who dumped the songs for the SNES version of Brandish II...was FawgRadiation, Toby Fox's old username. The SNES modding community has a special file called .SPC which is what he dumped using an emulator, and using that file you can replay music exactly how it was meant to be. So yeah, there was probably a lot more to Megalovania than just "I just yelled whatever into a microphone and copied the notes."
That will be one of the next videos in this series, because Toby's history of reusing, repurposing, remaking and re-inspire-take-borrowing of some melodies is fascinating... that and I have Gaster brainrot.
@@relaxalaxGaster is cool as shit I don’t blame you
"The last boss music was a little inspired by brandish 2's" - the Halloween Hack commentary
I swear Toby barely made many original tracks, he really is a master of reusing (mostly his own leitmotifs) and deliberately rearranging / referencing stuff. I wonder how many tracks he made have some other more or less origin and which are actually 100% original. (Come to think of it, would be a nice community task finding out, but I'm pretty sure many people have overanalyzed all his tracks already)
@@relaxalax I think we all have at least a little Gaster brainrot by now
One sample that I think nobody has picked up yet is Taylor Swift sampling Super Smash Bros.
If you go to 2:29 of Taylor Swift 'Lover', you will hear Palutena's neutral B lock on sound faintly in the background.

@@NoahJonesVlogs the lyric "I take this magnetic force of a man" you can hear the fast triple beep lock on sound on the word "Magnetic"

What when a game samples a different game music.
Here is one that I believe I'm the first person to notice:
Aquatic Ruin Zone (Simon Wai Prototype) - Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Cuphead OST - Floral Fury
I just wanna say how much I love the editing in RelaxAlax videos. It's so distinct, entertaining, and appealing all while being educational. Good job Alex! 👍
I don’t know if anyone has mentioned this, but a personal favorite of mine is how Freddie Dredd’s “Redrum” samples the song “Soda Pop” by Shane Mesa from the MOTHER 4 OST. It’s crazy to think that there are songs out there sampling stuff from fan games that didn’t even come out.
WHAT
@@Pmf95k I know, right?
You know what? I've been listening to thst recently and that's incredible
FANGAMES TOO?!?!. Imagine if someone out there sampled Metro Madness act 1 from Sonic Before The Sequel, or London Bridge from JRS
He really loves his bossa nova samples😊
2:05 Brazil mentioned
This was fun as heck to watch. Great production, great concept, great video. I love it!
one of my favorite examples is Bring Out The Sun, by Windmills. It unashamedly samples the Nexus theme from Demon's Souls (and even plays a quote from one of the NPCs at the beginning of the song), and a lot of the lyrics are referential to the game in some way. But they don't just, like, *play* the theme, they remix it in a really cool way. It's a great song, I recommend checking it out.
Correction: Lupe Fiasco sampled New Order's Elegia which just happened to be the song used for the MGS V trailer.
i’ve never watched this channel but like 3 minutes in i hear undertale and gaster, i like this man

Considering the pause menu of Goldeneye 007 is one of the best pause menu themes of all time, do you think you could cover some other menus and their themes? I feel like a lot of games have menus that are functionally and audibly wonderful! Kingdom Hearts, Halo, Wario World, Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Pikmin (Piklopedia), the newly released Rain Code... the list could go on!
I second this that'd be interesting
mario strikers charged pause menu
death by glamore was "stolen" from noisemaster's theme (a banger ngl) which he had made previously for cucumber quest
also, i feel like there was some plagerism going on with JUMPER by capsule and sasasr online menu music
You have to remember a lot of these rappers/singers don't write/compose their own songs, so it really could just be one dude that really likes Zelda, Mario and Chrono trigger.
5:39 cabbage plant gang
10:30 i was scared it was about to break into tokyo drift 😂😂😂
Fun fact: The sound effect Used for Peppino’s Taunt in Pizza Tower is also used in Funky Stadium from Mario Kart Wii!
One thing I found interesting with two songs was that LittleBigPlanet's theme, "Orb of Dreamers" and Minecraft's "Chirp" have the same exact sample, besides chirp being slightly slowed down orb of dreamers, but sound so identical it's crazy.
3:10 it’s actually sampled from the song “Elegia” by New Order made in 1985
9:53 Space Road 1979 from Omori
To anyone looking for that song, you're welcome
I just found that out man
Every time I hear 21 Guns or a 21 Guns sample, I just hear the chorus of "Darker Side of Blue" by Tal Bachman (1999). Totally should have been a hit.
The “China Love” sample is likely from a dedicated sample library as the same chimes are used in “Adabat - Night” from Sonic Unleashed
It’s also kinda crazy that George’s Bizet used Freddy’s jingle for a part of his song “Toreador March”
3:29 MR CHEDDA
I guess it makes sense now, a lot of the early video game music were inspired by music either of the time, or what they grew up with, a lot of pop, rock, disco, and even heavy metal. Now, a lot of artists have grown up playing video games, and video game music was as influential to them as music on the radio, and it makes sense it's getting sampled.
Funnily enough, there's a (relatively) recent video from Andrew Cunningham that does a big ol' deep dive on a specific thing touched on in this video, that being Gaster's Leitmotif appearing in songs across Deltarune's first and second chapters, as well as "appearing" across Deltarune's first and second chapters
i just think its kinda neat that there are different ways to approach a similar concept in one's own video style
That was my first thought too when he did the gaster bit.
I can imagine that Billie would have accidentally sampled plants vs zombies. I was homeschooled with their family as a kid and her and her brother were some gamers. Finneas actually showed me the meet the team tf2 videos.
Little more well known - but BoneThugz n Harmony Sampled the end theme from Eternal Champions on Sega Genesis for "Crossroads"
12:26 LMAO no fucking way 🤣

My man, XO Tour Llife is by Lil Uzi Vert, not XXXTENTACION.
There is something so nostalgic about the old gravel texture
I think it’s super ugly.
nah, man went back to beta 1.8 for this sample. I would know, I've been doing nothing but playing Mangopack for the past week and my doors are all squeaky as hell.
The gravel texture changed in 1.3, and frankly I only remember that because it was so damn ugly before.
(but not as bad as the pre-1.3 leather armor. Half of my distaste for the original creative inventory was tied to having to see these ugly textures every time I scrolled down the endless list of items.)
Who knew so many rappers were gamers? This makes me want to hear more rap songs now and find any Easter eggs of game noises or music samples within them.
You have to remember that most of these artists have producers make beats for them. I doubt Janet Jackson even knows about The Legend of Mana.
11:41 Alax doing multiple smooth transitions, back to back.
He really said, "Using the Metal Gear solid 5 trailer theme", Just Say, "Using Elegia From New Order as a Sample".
yeah, I was about to say...
bro really wanted a reason to contrive that into the video because it wouldn't be relevant otherwise lol.

As a producer and a video game fan, it makes me very happy when my two biggest interests merge and we get some really good songs from it
Honestly I’m surprised nobody has sampled Shovel Knight’s ost or sound effects yet. It seems like it would be easy to work with
I think nobody is old enough yet. A lot of these samples tend to be from oldish games and the newest sample which was the plants vs zombies one was from billie ellish who made that song when she was like 17.
Hollow knight would be better
I'd argue the opposite. Jake Kaufman's compositions are surprisingly intricate.

Metamorphosis by Interworld and Mangrove Cove: Underwater from Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze
One thing I've noticed with using music samples in music, especially in cases where large portions of music are used, is that audio copy-protection algorithms tend to pick up on it too.
I've seen a lot of content creators have their videos content-claimed either because they used video game music as background music, or because they were playing the video game itself. And in these cases, it's usually not the studio that actually owns/wrote the song that claims it, but rather some random song that sampled it in their music.
Your video production style is an instance of ms paint thats been open since 1997 and honestly it just works
12:39

There's this one mashup artist called Jazzwave and one of the first songs i heard of theirs was they took the PS1 startup sound, mixed it into a really cool, hypnotic sounding song and then added the vocals from Roundabout by Yes overtop. If your wondering what Roundabout is, its the closing song of Jojo's bizzare adventure part 1, which spawned the to be continued meme with the little arrow. I forgot what the song was called, but if you look them up the song is the first song on their first album, Copywrong. Which is also getting a remaster soon I think.
Not to sound pretentious bc I know its way easier to script by mentioning the artist using the beat instead of also having to mention the producer but alot, if not all of these arent examples of “the artist sampling a game” but the producer doing it.
and as a producer I think they deserve a little more credit next time rather than only mentioning TM88. Great video otherwise
Doja cat’s “Nintendhoe” is literally just the Gamecube startup theme. No subtlety. She didn’t even remix it herself, she just took someone else’s remix of the gamecube startup and put it in her song.

Fun fact about these samples, some of them might be likely because these sample could be part of a sample pack that the scorers used especially some of the vocal ones...there were licensed sample packs that were used a lot back then
