I already wanted to visit Edinburgh and now I want to visit even more to see these adorable bookshops!
Thank you so much for making these videos! I'm coming to Edinburgh for student exchange and I've been trying to get to know the city as much as I can beforehand (I'm really excited about coming). I can't wait to check all these bookshops out :)
This video is actually a godsend! I came to Edinburgh yesterday and am here until Thursday and wanted to spend a day independent book crawl! Thank you so so so much Jean, can't wait to go to all these places tomorrow :)
Ah what perfect timing, so glad I finally got it filmed and uploaded ^_^! Hope you enjoy all of them!
A shop dog truly is the stamp of an utterly fabulous book shop! I've been meaning to visit Edinburgh for so long. I will certainly check these out when I get the chance to go :)
My best friend is in Edinburgh atm & this video makes me so jealous of all the amazing bookshops she has access too!!!!
No idea why I'm watching this as I don't live in Edinburgh and I will probably never go there, but this is a such a great video!! So helpful and thought out
This video was brilliant! If I could like it more than once, I would, for now I have a completely good idea as to what kind of bookstores are in Edinburgh, Scotland, and it would give me an additional reason to take a plane and visit (though if you ask Charlie, it would be so that he could wear a kilt). I like how you gave me a hands on idea as to what can be found in each store and I must say that I am not sure which one I would want to visit most. I guess with Word Power Books, it would depend on the nature of the nonfiction books or with Golden Hare, the nature of their selection. From what you are saying, though, all of these shops specialize in something or have a great selection of something, but possess more than their specialty. This has been a Independent/Used Bookstore month for me, having visited five stores in eight days (three of which on three straight days). Next week, I will be conducting hauls from the three used bookstores, where I show viewers what I got in addition to promoting the bookstore. I like the fact that people are championing their bookstores, for there is something so, so special about them. You said you have secondhand bookstores that you did not mention? If so, I would like to see a video of those secondhand shops that are in Edinburgh or in that particular area. Thank you for sharing! :) -Josh
What a lovely video Jean :) I love seeing these little bookshop tours - I must come and visit you in Edinburgh some day!
I am moving to Edinburgh in September. This video was helpful to show me where I should visit. Thank you!
Yay perfect timing - I hope you love it here!
ahhh thank you so much. I'm visiting family in edinburgh this summer and will definitely checking these bookshops out xx
Yay perfect timing - I hope you enjoy them when you visit :D!
This is a lovely tour. I hope to one day get a chance to visit these places. -- I hope others are inspired to do videos like this, we all love seeing bookshops around the world. I am tempted to do one for Seattle :)
Me and a friend are planning to have our annual book-trip to Edinburgh perhaps next spring, this was helpful. And I'd definitly be interested in a video about used bookshops as well. Those are my favourites.
Choncey Boddington (or I think she's now called C. A. Dubois?) did a video on those last year during Independent Book Shop Week!
Yay, i'm going to Edimburgh in October to visit the university, this is making the trip all the more exciting Jean! Thank you for this lovely video :)
I hope you enjoy visiting the university ^_^ I did my undergrad and postgrad there and it is lovely! I hope you get to stop by the bookshops too :D.
This is awesome, and perfect timing for me - I'm moving to Edinburgh in September and although I've been several times before I've never been book shopping there. Looking forward to checking all of these out! Thanks!!
Yeah and when they're small indies they can be hard to spot sometimes. I hope you get a chance to browse through them all when you move ^_^, you're welcome!
Ooh I would love to see a video about second hand bookshops! I'm planning a trip to Edinburgh in October and my boyfriend and I are booksellers who love to visit bookshops when abroad :-)
Such a lovely little video, Jean! I must bear these in mind when I go on my trip to Edinburgh later this year. Ohh I'm so excited now!
You're coming to Edinburgh :O when? xx
I'm going to a Harry Potter fan event at the end of November :)
I'm going to Edinburgh in August and wanted to buy some books so this is perfect! Thank you so much, really.
Fantastic :D have a great trip, and enjoy the festival if you're doing anything ^_^!
Ali Smith is going to the Edinburgh Book Festival, I bought the tickets like 3 days ago. So excited!
Ahhh I was in Edinburgh a couple of weeks ago and was looking for independent bookshops! Luckily I found Golden Hare... loved it! thanks for making this video would love to see more if you travel to other cities :) xx
Golden Hare is probably the hardest to find because it's not quite as central, so glad you got a chance to visit it ^_^! x
I've been to all of those, my favourite one is the fantasy/sci-fi one. They also have a selection of plushies and many things fantasy related. Though I spend most of the time either in the library or the big bookshop chains, I should probably change that.
I'm going to Edinburgh next week so you posted this right on time! Can't wait :)
Ah perfect timing - excellent! Glad to be of service ^_^
I went to all of the shops you mentioned except for the first one (because for some reason I didn't write that one down, I really don't understand how that happened). I made it my mission to buy a book in each shop, as a souvenir. I especially loved Golden Hare Books, I chose a book I normally would never buy because its entirely outside of the genres I usually would pick up. It's called Death in Spring and it was translated from Catalan. Though the story sounds really good I chose entirely based on its cover. I'm really curious to see how it is! I also went to Armchair books, a second hand bookshop, because Choncey recommended it in a video she did last year, so I would also recommend that shop to anyone who's visiting Edinborough, it's also located right in the city centre!
Such a good guide! I'd definitely like to visit all of these, if I travel to Edinburgh in the future (fingers crossed).
I so wish I'd had this video available when I was last in Edinburgh! My partner had lived in Edinburgh for years during and after university but he failed to mention where the bookshops were -perhaps because he didn't want me to fill my luggage with more books!
You'll just have to come back aha :D.
+Jean Bookishthoughts I suppose so! You're so lucky to live there - such a beautiful city. I was saying to my partner the other day that I love the city where I live (Wellington, NZ) but it's just missing an old castle on a hill in the middle of the city! haha
Can't wait to go tomorrow!!
Yay have tonnes of bookish fun!
I love love love this video. I think I've only been to the Golden Hare. Must do a bookshop crawl next time I'm in Edinbra
Do it!!! Spread the indie bookshop love, that so a fantastic idea 😊 and I'm so glad to hear you enjoyed the video :D. The bookshopfootage seemed to add up to so much more until I started inserting into the video haha 😅
I feel like I should plan a trip to Scotland just to go on a bookshop tour.
Now I want to come to Edinburgh just so I can visit these bookshops! I mean, I want to see the city too, but BOOKSHOPS.
The city is lovely but of course, the priority is bookshops! ^_^
Ah this was great - thank you! Will be hunting down some of these when I'm up for the Fringe.
Word Power is even a Fringe venue ^_^ so you may end up in it anyway aha. Enjoy your trip!
I would LOVE to hear your recommendations for second hand book shops! I'll be in Edinburgh for a week in september (it'll be my third time visiting!) and am determined to visit as many book shops as possible!
All these bookshops look excellent. I need to make a visit to the Edinburgh bookshop soon. An attack by dogs when I was 10 means I have been terrified of them and mostly cannot even look at photos or videos of dogs so a visit to Word Power will not be on my list though I would have liked to go based on how you have described it :)
Oh I'm so sorry. The dog is very quite and usually stands outside wandering around, never bothering customers who don't approach it myself. I know that may be absolutely irrelevant though I just thought I'd share incase it changed anything. I hope you enjoy the other bookshops though when you get a chance to visit ^_^!
Thank you :) Will visit the other bookshops soon.
Transreal looks like the kind of bookshop I would love.
Thanks for another great video, Jean
Thank you ^_^ I'm glad you enjoyed it!
This video made me want to go to Edinburgh. So sad that it is so far away from where I live :'(
But hopefully I can go someday :)
Will hopefully check these out next time I'm in Edinburgh. I don't have any full price independent bookshops near me but Leakey's second-hand bookshop is worth checking out for anyone who is visiting Inverness.
I've not been to Inverness in years but the second bookshop has been on to visit list for potentially equally as long haha!
Well this is going to help me ENDLESSLY next week! Can't wait to get trailing around these shops and also meet you and also David can't wait to stroke that dog! Xxx
It looks a lot smaller on the outside than it is on the inside? Is it the tardis?
Pretty sure it is but shhh ;).
This was such a great video! I really want to go to Edinburgh - and when I do I'll definitely have this in mind! Thank you for making it :) xx
Ooh now I want to go to Edinburgh even more... It's on my near-future-travelling list ;). Which one is your favourite? x
Haha that would be telling, ah honestly I love them all - they all have very distinct personalities and different selections ^_^ x
I am so jealous you live in Edinburgh. It's one of of my favourite cities in the world. Oddly I've never been shopping there for books. Which I am suddenly embarrassed of. I now was to go to all these.
*want
Lovely video! I am going to Edinburgh by mid July and I will check these out :D
Have a lovely time :D
yes please make a second hand bookshoop tour please please please ;)
I don't live in Edinburgh anymore but maybe one day. In the meantime I will maybe do one for London ^_^
Thomas Reid! Dugald Stewart! Sir William Hamilton! First Editions please! Noting later than 1874! ::) Recent scholarship on the Scottish Enlightenment? Of course! Let's start a revival of the School! Maybe a guest lecturer in the shop? :)
Great video Jean! I wish Glasgow had more independent bookshops 😔 and also - did I spy a Nicola in the first clip? 😉
Haha you did indeed, spot the booktuber! I know, it's mad when Glasgow is so big :/ not cool Glasgow not cool. I still wish Looking Glass would pop back up in Edinburgh though.
I really enjoyed this!
Oh noo I just came home from Edinburgh yesterday haha. I guess now there is no reason for me not to go back there again :)
Oh no! Well exactly, you'll just have to come back ^_^ the bookshops call.
Yes to all of these! But also Armchair Books? That place is a haven.
Ah just heard your ending haha. Amazing choices all round :)
Haha yeah, definitely, Armchair Books is my absolute favourite second hand bookshop in Edinburgh ^_^!
Thanks ☺️👍 for video keep going 🤠
