I've done a load of reserach on building my own sauna and this video was by far the most helpful. You got all the things that a lot of folks don't do - venting on an exterior wall, air gap between cedar and vapor/foil by installing sleepers underneath. Well done, my dude.
As someone who works in the lumber industry, if you go out of your way to get clear cedar, you'll be paying a significantly (underscore, underscore, underscore) higher price and you'll be waiting a looong time. My suggestion is just embrace the knots, they bring character to the wood. And they'll be the difference between paying 3-5 dollars a foot and paying 15-25 dollars a foot.
Normally here in Finland we don't put lights in the ceiling. That is the toughest place for them from heat. Also keep in mind that the steam can not be let out and I think you punctured the foils where you put the lights.
I lived in Finland for a few years and built a few saunas with friends. Saw dust makes for excellent breathable insulation in a dry place like Finland.
Great stuff! I would leave a gab between first panel and a floor, so the air can go to air gap between panel and aluminium foil, air will dry the condensation water if there is some, sorry for bad english :)
You my friend are a kindred spirit. after spending a year or so in Finland I dream about the day I own my own home. First thing I'll do is build a sauna >:D
Who needs a workspace or a man cave when you can build a sauna eh! 😆 Good choice! You must have been a wood worker for a long time I'm guessing? You seem really knowledgeable and well informed! Coming along here (in this vid really nicely)!
Question(s)- why did you do tile flooring? Or at least not put heating in the floor? Wouldn’t that make it a colder ground? Also, was a there a particular reason you put the tile direct to the concrete foundation instead of floating it? The flooring is something I’ve been going back and forth on for a while now, and I was originally going to do a raised floor and insulate beneath and use the same wood as the walls so the material and temperature is the same throughout. But the tile option is a good one to, but I’d be worried about getting the floor up to temp so it’s not cold on your feet Either way, looks amazing. Well done 💪
Tile floor mainly for the look. The tile stays about 85 - 95 degrees while sauna is in use. The cool floor doesn’t bother me much, but my kids love sitting on it during our sessions. Good luck on your build. 🫡
Nice work! What is the distance between ceiling and upper sitting level? I have build a few saunas myself too and noticed that 110cm is the perfect distance. And as much stones in the stove as possible, if it's a wood burning. I have 250kg of stones in my stove and you only need like 50C temperature to get the perfect experience.
I’ll need to measure that. But they are 8’ ceilings. Which I would have done 7’, if I was to do it again. Stones really hold that heat in well. I think I have about 550lbs.
Great looking sauna! Building mine right now - have been watching your build. Ordered the aria vents too - thanks for that tip. QQ - what size brads did you use to nail the clear cedar to the furring strips?
Very cool. I am interested in knowing the cost of building and the number of hours it took. I own a JNH Lifestyles sauna and would like to compare the total cost and time of building it to my own experience, which was a total of $1900 delivered and only took 25 minutes to set up?
I’m building a sauna in my basement that will be 6.5’ wide 6’ deep x8’ high.. I’m gonna be using the huum mini hive 10.5.. I will also have a glass wall.. I’m wondering if my 10.5 kw hive mine heater is gonna be enough. Do you think a hive 12kw would have done the job in yours (instead of the 15)?
stainless steel staples will still rust. other than that you did an amazing job. I don't have the skill to do all that. I rather buy a external sauna outside from Costco place in my patio and call it a day.
High ceilings are a waste in a sauna basically when you're sitting on the highest bench the ceiling should be a few inches higher anything higher is a waste of money in materials and electricity to many cubic feet and all the heat is out of reach but money doesn't look like an issue for this guy baseboard in a garage? ...... please 😜
@@DaveyStruggle extra trivia: a lot of finnish homes have tile floors for sauna that are the same floors as the bathroom they're connected to, and everything wooden gets pretty hot at 90C, so i wouldn't even want wooden flooring either. source: i have my own sauna in finland

$4.15 LF for 1x4 western red clear cedar in bay area.
$2.15 LF for knotty cedar
he has a 15 foot high garage... i don't think money is an issue
@@gavinb780 Tell me about your supplier. I'd love to buy from them.

You build a few saunas and still, you didn't see anything peculiar about this particular project?
Just wanted to say you work very nice and clean
your craftsmanship is top notch! super impressed.

I agree, great idea.
There is polyurethane insulation that comes with aluminium foil. It is even superior to rock wool. Look kingspan products. Nice sauna tough.
Haven’t heard of it. Will look into it, thanks.

Best to wear a mask when doing insolation.
The cost seems like a lot, but I do think having a permanent sauna is a lot nicer then a kit. I wonder what the pre-pandemic price would have been.

mate, i didnt watched your second video yet, but critical thing is not to leave space betwen wall board and floor. boards will wet and root :)
that laser level on the trash can trick was an interesting start to your video. ;- )
I was hoping no one would notice. 😬
Paint your conduit to match the external walls.
Please post the recessed lights you used in the ceiling. Thanks.
You should create playlists for these series and link them to a pinned comment on the shorts. 😀
Is their a link to the stapler your using. I see the staples but not the stapler? Thanks.
great project. is the room between the wooden wall, inside, and the aluminium barrier foil a problem in terms of condensation/moisture??
Looks great. But 15 grand? I can buy 3 pre-built saunas for that price where I live.
Do you plan to move the mini split? They are supposed to have a minimum clearance to the ceiling and wall.
Well done this is great

What brand of foil insulation did you use? I been running into all products having the bubble or a foam ..??

This is interesting
Your garage is bigger then most people's apartment...
Can I build a Similar Susan but with plastered 6” blocks

I have a breakdown in the description. That’s a great price to pay for the benefits of regular sauna use. Highly recommend.
Good man but there is some mistakes that isnt good for the sauna
covered all the staples with foil but then drill right through for the cedar?
There has to be a better way. 🤔
Insulating the floor is less essential, it is all about insulating the ceiling
💯
Why did you take the old insulation out?
Very nice! Could you please share the inside dimension ? How wide are the tongue and groove board, 4 or 6in?Thanks.
Sure. The interior is 8’ high, 8’ deep and about 5.5’ wide. I used 6” clear cedar for the walls.
Love it! My cousins just discussed creating one on a pontoon. Any advice for that?
could this also function as a faraday cage?
Your garage is bigger than my house.
Are those lights holding up after a year? I'm about to install the same ones.
Had no issues as of yet. They still work and dim great.
@@DaveyStruggle thank you!!!
Hey where’d you get the cedar? Is it tongue and groove? Thanks!
Yes it is T&G. I had to drive to Parr lumber in Portland, OR. Couldn’t find anything reasonable in Idaho.
What did you use for your overhead lights?
How big is your sauna.? What are the dimensions?
8’ H x 8’L x 6’ W

Step 1
Have a massive garage 😂
Jesus man love the sauna but the garage is so big i would think you have a airplane in it
What kind of lights did you use for the ceiling?
I used these lights for the sauna ceiling.

In 1:40 he is using thermo folie. What is the name of this folie?? Somebody can help??? I want buy But i cant find it in internet. Thank You
I wasn’t able to find it at my local home improvement stores, but my local insulation supplier did have it for fairly cheap.
Your *garage" is bigger than my house
Where do you put your car 😢
In my other garage.
FYI that’s a hanger not a garage
No way, I’ve got a car in my garage but I put my private spa in the back garden
Where is part 2?
It’s coming, a few touch ups left to do. Hopefully in a week or two.
He used clips through the foil. Oh no.

way to get clear cedar
Why no wood floor?
I prefer to have a tile floor. Reason was solely based on aesthetics.

that AC unit seems too close to the ceiling..
yep
Where did u get your sauna heater stand and hot rocks from?
Got a link to it in the description for you.
Wheres part 2??
Had a hiccup with the original heater that was ordered. More information in part two coming. Project delayed much longer than anticipated.
You've pretty much fked yourself for being able to service that AC split unit now, you wont even be able to remove the cover!
No offence, that's an Wearhouse not a garage.
😂😂😂😂😂❤❤
TOO MUCH WORK THOUGH
