I had never heard of Townes Van Zandt until a year ago. I walked into a waffle house and seen an old trucker sittin by himself crying. I asked what's the matter and he just showed me the original song, and then this one. That's how powerful a good song can be.
I absolutely love this song and killer video.
I'm so sick of the bullshit the country music radio stations are throwing at us.
They can keep the 'pop country' and the 'kids' who couldn't sing a real tune if their life depended on it.

I've seen Cody Jinks numerous times, but about six months ago I saw Cody and Whitey at Billy Bob's in Ft. Worth. What a show! I really do believe these guys are the Merle Haggard's of our time. The music is already there, the music industry just hasn't caught up yet. Fuck pop country.

So I spent the next 2 hours on youtube and Townes Van Zandt songs. I cant get enough now. Have to say I had tears when I heard Townes sing this. Sooo freakin good. Wow! Brother, you absolutely nailed this song! This is one of the most haunting, rawest songs ever written and when performed by lesser talents it becomes a train wreck pretty quickly! The first time I heard it was in the film/documentary, "Heartworn Highways". When TVZ sat in his trailer in the old Clarksville section of Austin, TX, and played it to Uncle Seymour Washington, his crazy girlfriend, Cindy and his dog, Geraldine! The song brought Uncle Seymour to tears, and this is a man known as the "walkin' blacksmith"! A black man born in Texas in 1896, he certainly had his share of dark memories built up over his 80 years of life! If a song can bring a man that hard and tough to tears then you've met the writer's goal! Take your audience out of their comfort level and make them feel!! Well, it was pretty obvious you took this song with you to that place in your soul, that most of us are afraid to open the door on! We're afraid to go there, because it's a place of broken glass, old tears, spilt whiskey, shattered promises, empty apologies, and ideas and dreams that have long ago passed their expiration date! Obviously , Townes wrote this from a pretty dark place and if you're gonna do it justice as a performer, you'd better connect with the lyrics at a visceral level! Well, like I said at the start, dude, you killed it! Thanks!

Jeanene you likely will never see this comment, but on the off chance you do: I knew Townes back in 1965-1967 time period when he would sing at Sand Mountain in Houston. As far as I can remember he performed this for the first time at the Mountain and I was lucky enough to be there. I was starting my own writing at the time, lots of heavy influence from Dylan etc., and between Townes and Jerry Jeff I learned a lot about composition, music, and of course, life. It broke my heart when I saw Townes had passed but it did not surprise me: some folks just don't fir our expectations. He was a good man and I am sorry for your loss. However as painful as your loss was and is, the world lost a rare talent. I wish I could leave a legacy behind that was one tenth of what Townes left. God Bless.

What a great sound ! I saw Whitey a few years ago at Craponne in France, it was a good show. At the end of the concert, i congratuled him and his band with my Waylon's cap and he responded me that Waylon is still the king and showed his Waylon's tatoo on his shouder. I think honesty that artists like Whitey Morgan, Jamey Johnson, Jackson Taylor, Frank Foster and Cody Jinks are worthy descendant.
