As a man city fan in 1973 I fell I fell in love with AJAX in "70 s ,Cruyff remains my all time fav player.
I saw him play later for the Washington Diplomats. He was so far superior to every other player in that league, finally he got so frustrated with his mediocre teammates, he took the ball at midfield and dribbled around every player of the opposing team, including the goalie and scored an easy goal like it was taking a Sunday walk down the street. He Was The Best, even better Pele in my opinion.
Piet Keizer is my fav

This was the golden age of football. I’m so glad I lived through this era.
Same here...
It was perhaps your golden age and I'm not that young either. But looking at this football the quality is very low compared to modern standards. Players nowadays are faster, stronger, have better technique, passing, shooting, tactical insights. Ajax 1973 was the best of their time and they set a inspiring style and culture but calling this the golden age has no ground.
@@piregister that's right but the mentality of the teams was great! They just tried to score as much goals as they can. Now days they mostly try to avoid allowing goal from the opponent team
@@piregister It has perfect ground. Football nowdays is an americanized commercial product. Everything is robotic, mechanic, devoid of any other substance beyond mindless stats and made up media narratives to sell plus the plagues of agents and illegal betting. Players are dumb, uneducated, immature, effeminate, unable to perform under conditions that arent completely controlled and perfect. And they'are all naturally inferior athletes and footballers, compared to the old masters.
@@mskidi Agreed on all your side issues, but I choose to focus on the essence, the quality of the sport performance. Therefor, it was not the golden age.

A golden era of football. Well done, Ajax ! Rangers fan from Glasgow.
Ajax with Cruyff in a leading role are one of the best teams in history. They created a very innovative and influential style called "total football". FC Barcelona is the main and well known disciple of that Ajax style.
That unforgettable team won three consecutive European Cups in the early 70's.
Before Ajax won their three EC's in a row (1971, 1972, 1973) Feyenoord was the first Dutch club to win the EC in Milan against Celtic in 1970. Feyenoord also played "total football" and was the best club team of the world during 1970. It's simply not true that Ajax or Cruijff (let alone Rinus Michels) 'invented' total football. Feyenoord also won the league in the years 1969, 1971 and 1974, while Ajax did in the years 1970, 1972 and 1973. Both Dutch teams dominated football during the first half of the seventies. The Dutch national team of 1974 consisted mostly of players from Ajax and Feyenoord.
Tell us something we don't already know!
But Feyenoord played the same way during that age. Not special 'Ajax'. The Dutch national team also created the same style. So it's the Dutch style of the seventies and not in particular the Ajax style.
@ Not everyone did know, but now they can know it.

Hab das Spiel damals live gesehen. Ajax war so ein fantastisches Team und Cruyff vorneweg.

They look like a basketball team , tall players with much talent and much elegance , golden fotball that was back in the days

I remember this match well. It was the first leg of the Champions League quarterfinals (when it was still called the European Cup before they retitled it in 93) that year. Some of the greatest players of all time out there for both squads. Cruyff, Neeskens, Keizer, Rep and Arie Haan who had 2 goals on the day were all out there for Ajax, and Beckenbauer, Muller, Breitner and Maier among others were out there for Bayern Munich. Was a great Ajax team that was clearly the class of the world, but Bayern really played poorly in the offensive end. They just weren't crisp and didn't take advantage of anything.
It wasn't the first leg of the 'Champions League' it was the European Cup, a proper knockout tournament, not the drawn out money grab we have today.
@@Veaseify Same competition. They retitled it in 93. Sorry if you didn't know they retitled it. I assumed most football fans knew, so I didn't use the old title (but I made an edit to clarify it if anyone else is confused by the old title versus the new title). They have made changes to who can compete since then. I'm a Liverpool fan and I count the 4 times Liverpool won before 93-94 as Championship league wins. They have instituted the group stages (in 96-97) and allowed non national champions to enter (97-98). The group stages really became necessary once they added all the teams from a fairness standpoint. I really believe that it's tougher to win nowadays with the non champions in the tournament since you get teams that are almost invariably stronger than the national champions of many countries in the competition from the top leagues who wouldn't have qualified years ago.
@@shaunmcdonough9016 The Group Stages were introduced because Silvio Berlusconi was outraged that Napoli lost to Real Madrid in the first knockout round in 1987. It made no sense to him that the Serie A champions should be out of European competition in the middle of September (and of course he didn't want the same thing to happen to Milan). From an economic point of view he was absolutely correct but from a sporting point of view it is debatable whether it was a good thing.
There is absolutely no chance of anybody outside the dozen or so biggest clubs in Europe winning the trophy these days which makes it pretty boring unless you are a fan of one of those clubs.
@@Veaseify Berlusconi was probably the main force behind the changes that occurred in the 90's, but I never heard that it was Napoli's loss alone that really spurred him to promote the changes. After all that was before his political days, so I wouldn't have thought he would have any particular love for Napoli and Milan won the tournament the next two years under the same rules. They could have addressed having a matchup of the champions from 2 of the 4 strongest leagues in the first round by seeding if they had wanted. I always believed Berlusconi was ultimately more interested in getting Milan into the tournament even if they didn't win their league and getting more games played to bring in more money. But his fairness concerns about some of the early matchups certainly were justified and I could see him not wanting to see Milan with a nightmare first round matchup like Napoli got that year. I just think they could have addressed them by seeding. You're correct that the odds of winning the tournament are remote if you're not one of the top maybe ten clubs in the world. Porto was the last club not from England, Germany, Italy or Spain to win and since the changes were made it is the only club not from those countries to win it (and the Portugese league is very strong, one of those right below the big four). But isn't the goal to see who the very best team is?
@@Veaseify Original idea was that best (most famous) teams play European league, but it was to hard (to expensive) in those times (1955), so they played cup system. Partisan Belgrade represented former Yugoslavia although they weren't national champions 1955.

Justice for Arie Haan!
He was one of the most instrumental players of those '70s Ajax and Netherlands teams, and yet eternally underrated. A true all-terrain of football. I've watched every single video available of those Dutch teams (both Ajax and the national team) plus Anderlecht and I realized how incredibly important he was on those teams. The guy could play in pretty much any position on the field except for centreforward, covered an insane lot of terrain, recovered the ball, played it neatly, was a good passer both short and long, appeared by surprise in attack, was good on headers, had a terrific long range shot and contributed a fair share of goals, particularly in important games -and this video proves it-.
In the World Cups '74 and '78, the only non-final game that the Netherlands lost (2-3 against Scotland) was, coincidentally, the only game in which Haan didn't play.
The family and believed that when we went 3-1 on Holland that we were going g to win 4 - 1 but Aries Haan kicked I one from 35 yards. Not a bad goal.Ps I am one luck person that I got to talk to .y idol outside Celtic park In cruyff. What a great guy was he.1997
I am a Holland fan and Arie Haan's 2 wonderful goals in 1978 World Cup will forever be amongst the best goals ever scored. But you didn't mention his weakness. Haan was not a natural defender, and was forced to play in central defense since Barry Hulshoff was injured before 1974 world cup. In the final, for the 1-st German goal, Haan let Hölzenbein to move forward inside the penalty box without trying to tackle him. Same thing with Argentina's 1-st goal: if as a defender you are behind Kempes and he is about to score, your only option is do a sliding tackle, yet it was Kempes who did that. Haan was incapable of tackling and sadly it cost Holland in 2 World Cup finals.
