Harbor Freight Clamp Tips & Tricks **REVISED**

Please note this is a revised video. I had some viewers say the comments were hard to read so I added the grey bar at the bottom to fix that issue. Great idea on the clamp pads! And cleaning tools is always a good idea, along with light oiling. For wax, I have a can of nealy 100% carnuba wax for automobiles that I have had for years. Works great.

Great tips Chris! I found my clamps get a lot of dust on them and don't slide well. Like you mention wiping them off works great. And yes the caps to fall off the end. I put a dab of super glue on them and I've never had one fall off ever again. 👊🏻
WoodenCreationz I haven't had a cap fall off since...then again I'm using the 'red-handled' clamps now :)
I too own a few Bessie's and enjoy those almost level with these. Like the rubber grips on the hf but meh... A little plasti dip does the trick! 👊🏻

ya, the hot melt glue trick works great. I also grind down the stop so I can take the clamp head off and use it with my MFT/3.
Nice! I found a few 9, that come off the bar without grinding them. I was happy because I don't have a grinder lol. I did a video on that too....cinematic masterpiece it was.
another tip/trick you can do for the pads that are forever getting lost...
If the round one gets lost, they can be easily be replaced with a soda bottle cap, trimmed down to diameter with scissors, I've done several that way and now I prefer that to the original.
Then, when you get new ones or replace old ones, a small glob of hot-glue inside either clamp cover/cap piece works wonders for keeping them on the clamp.

These are great mods! Thank you. I already used - yep, you guessed it, Turtle Wax Ice (on all my tools). Also use 3-in-1 on everything, or Boeshield T-9. The latter is a little stickier, but it protects against rust better than anything else I've ever used (I live 400 feet from the Atlantic Ocean - salt is a killer here). I'm down south, so we don't have Menards, but we do have Lowes and HD, so I'll check them for clamp jaw pads. I also watched another young UA-camr clean his metal jaws off real good and put a small dab of hot glue on the jaw, then slide the HF pad back on again. SO far - that is working for me. Anyway, thanks again - great tips!
The clamp pads are just getting back in stores. Pony went out of business but a company Ain China bought them. Wax on the rails is pretty nice. I use it on my Bessey clamps all the time. Thanks for watching and the comment.

You don’t buy HF tools because you are afraid of a little work or expect them to be the best out of the box. Last time I bought clamps from HF (back in 2005) they were plastic and broke on the first use. I used to only think of HF for throw away items or things I might use once. I am looking at the new Hercules saws and they look pretty nice, might pick up their job sight table saw. Might have to pickup some clamps too while I’m at it. I appreciate the advice and tips, solid suggestions.

i dipped my hf clamps in plastidip pad and all to get the pads to not fall off. worked great for me.

now that's a great idea since you cannot buy those Jorgensen clamps or pads. Jorgensen no longer in business, Maybe craftsman will fit
I have also thought about using plastic-dip - good to know that someone else has good results with it.
I wipe them down, oil the clutch and paste wax the screw and rail and hot glue the pads. Just another way of doing the same thing

Yessir....they are discontinued because Pony went out of business. I stop at any Menards I find to see if they still have them in stock and it's really hit and miss. Good luck in your quest.

Hey thanks. For some they do....for some they don't. All depends on the day they were made I suppose. I had issues with a few so that's why I decided to do a video. Honestly...I don't use these any more. I'm a BESSEY product tester so I donated all of my HF clamps to a high school wood/shop class.
Instead of oil-based lubes, might try dry/silicone and/or simple (candle) wax. These don't attract dust over time.

Have you done a test on the clamp strength with these of various sizes - curious how they compare to the brand name models?
The Cutting Bored hey long time...no see! No I haven't but I can say that I've bent a few of these HF clamps. I was engaging the handle and it kept going and going so I took the clamp off and the fixed jaw was bent out. I had no idea I was doing that and it didn't feel like I was applying a ton of torque on the handle. Never had that problem with a Bessey.
Yea dude! been a little overwhelmed on my end but moving into a house next week with a garage so i plan to ramp up my content - one thing being a bent lamination project so I'm looking to add 5-10 clamps to my collection but was curious if they would hold up in a project - i think i'm going to risk the purchase! Thanks Chris! I googled Harbor Freight clamps and your video was the third option - not bad!
Harbor Freight has two model numbers that appear to be identical clamps. For the 6" clamps, did you buy 96210 or 62239? Thanks for the tips on these.

Do you find that either of those clamp pads leave a smudge on wood sometimes? I have a bunch of craftsman quick grips that I've put blue tape on to prevent that.
+Ben Nawrath Nope. I've never had any issues with the clamp pads leaving smudges on the wood. I also don't apply a ton of clamping pressure either. The only time I use blue tape is on my pipe clamps and that's just to prevent staining and makes glue cleanup a lot easier.
I guess it's an inexpensive experiment to try :)
+Ben Nawrath I may have to try that in my next build video. Now do you use the clamps with the tape along joint lines? Was curious if the tape sticks on to the work piece. May have to do a shoutout for ppl to try that if you don't mind.
Actually I meant I could pickup some HF clamps myself and see if they smudge. Any excuse for a lunch time HF trip... But what I did a while ago was just put blue tape on the face of the clamps. I'm usually not clamping directly on a glue line, so I haven't had any sticking issues.
Ahhhhh ok. Yes any trip to HF is a good trip...especially for clamps. The 96210 and 96214 version...stay away from the shiny black bar/black grip version. Not a fan of those at all.
Although i buy other brands that work okay i use Spray Wax for a lot of Hacks in my life one of which is i have a TravelTrailer and a CabinCruiser Motor boat in which i routinely Spray the Plastic and the PorcelainToilets whenever they are as dry as possible it helps to keep them cleaner and shinier with a lot of use especially. when i have guests that routinely don’t know how to flush them properly i also spray the Instant Wax on the exterior side of all my Vessels glass to make the water from slashes slide off quickly without needing to turn on noisy Wiper Motors

Dobyns Media check the clutch spring and see if it has tension. Check your clutch plates too. Does your bar have anything on it that would make it not catch?

Have you tried putting a dab of epoxy on bottom of the pads so they are less likely to pop off as you scramble to squeeze the glue out? In 36 days I will have 50 of these!
I thought about doing that but to be honest I'm not a fan of the pads that come on them anyways. I prefer the orange pads I use in the video and they have not fallen off since swapping them all out BUT adding epoxy is a great idea if you don't want to spend the additional money for new pads.

I own over 50 of these clamps and never had one problem with any of them, every time I pass harbor freight I run in and pick a few up, they are great clamps. I will never pay more than $5 for a clamp again.
Over 50 you say......ok my wife says I can't accept that challenge. I never have an issue with these either. I just like to give them a little TLC before I use them.

I dunno..I have never had a problem with the oil. The sawdust in my kingdom of leftover wood particles seems to absorb it just fine.
I've never had the first problem with any of my many HF F clamps and I use them every single day and have for several years now..
Woops..I take that back. I did drop one and inadvertently stepped on it and bent the bar rendering it pretty much useless till I grabbed a new piece of flat bar to replace it.
Still working just fine even without the $300,000 car wax..
I'm very happy for you. BTW you don't know this but a few of my subs talked to me about some issues they had with their clamps and asked me what I'd do to fix the problem. Again these are their clamps...not yours. I showed them what I would do and they were happy I took the time to make the video for them.Obviously you don't need the car wax but that was one trick they really liked. Poke fun of it all you will, don't really care, it worked for them and for that I am very happy. Getting messages thanking me was well worth the time it took to make the video. I'm very happy you don't need to buy a $300,000 car to justify an $8 bottle of car wax too.
